two sides to every story.
part 13.
"you ok.." Johnny asked as we all walked through the
hospital in silence. I just looked up at him with sad eyes, and
quickly nodded. They all stood outside the door and I gripped the
doorknob tightly.
"I'm not going in alone..." I said looking at
everyone.
"babe.. It's better that way... He's your boyfriend...
go bond.. We'll come in, in a couple minutes, alright? go.. I
don't know.. talk to him." Jamie said lightly putting her
hand through my hair, soothingly. I sighed deeply, opened the door,
and then lightly closed it behind me and walked over to
Jessie's bed. The only sound in the room was his heart monitor.
I starred at it for a quick minute or two, then I looked back at
his face, his peacful, sleeping face, that has a few scratches and
scars on it, that look like will never fade away. I inhaled
deeply.
"If you never wake up Jessie... I... I don't know what
will happen to me.. to John.. to.... Natalie.." I trialed off.
I looked at the ground. I never know what to say to him. I find it
weird talking to him, cause he's such a good listener, and
speaker, but now he can't do either. Well, he can listen, but
not really, he's doing it unconsciencly.. which I don't
count as listening. I sighed, and looked away from him.
"It would've been so much easier if you just listened to
me, you know that right?" I said slowly.
"but no, you gotta be so stubborn.." I sighed. A light,
small smile grew on my lips.
"Good, you're here.." The doctor said walking in. He
walked over to the end of the bed, and looked at Jessie's clip
board.
"why is it good that I'm here?" I asked confused.
"cause, I've got a situation to discuss with you." He
said slowly, examining the clip board intently.
"alright.." I said slowly, out of worryness.
"if, and when, Jessie wakes up. He'll have the slightest
chance of returning the same way he was prior to the accident.
Meaning that if/when he wakes, he'll have a very small chance
of knowing who his family and friends are, how to speak, how to
spell, how to count, it'll basically be like taking care of an
toddler trapped inside of an 18 year olds body... he'll have to
be taught everything from, probably how to go to the bathroom
properly to how to walk, ride a bike, anything and everything.
He'll have no memory of anything.. It's like taking care of
a newborn baby, basically. So, I just wanted to know your opinion
on giving him speech therapy. Just teaching him how to talk, and
spell correctly. I figured I'd ask you, considering how close
you two were, but, if you don't want the job, I'll talk his
parents, then seek professional help, if they refuse aswell."
He explained.
"ah-are you serious.." I stuttered.
"yes, ma'am." He nodded.
"he... he won't remember... a thing..?" I asked. He
nodded again, I looked past the doctors shoulder, and starred at
Jessie.
"If all goes well, his brain wont be too damage to the point
where he forgets Everything, including speech, spelling, etc.
He'll just forget peoples names, and their relations to him..
but.. we don't know yet, cause, he's not awake yet."
He sighed. I just nodded.
"would I need to take, like, courses, on how to give proper
speech therapy?" I asked confused.
"nope, we'll just give you the proper books, papers, and
tools needed to teach him properly, and the rest is up to you, and
how you want to instruct him." He shrugged with a friendly
smile. I nodded slowly.
"I'll think about it.. but I'm not positive yet, you
can contact his family while I decide.." I said. He nodded,
returned the clip board to the proper location, and then walked
out. Once the door closed, everyone walked in.
"what did he have to say?" Johnny asked, walking over to
me.
"He said that there is a chance that once Jessie wakes up,
he'll forget everything including how to talk, spell, write,
walk, ride a bike, go to the bathroom properly, and if that
happens, he'll need proper speech therapy and care." I
sighed. John inhaled deeply, ran his hand through his hair
violently, and started pacing.
"and if that doesn't happen?" He managed to ask
through a clenched jaw.
"then he'll forget our names and our relationship to him..
but he'll know how to do everything else." I sighed. He
marched out of the room, and slammed the door behind him. I stepped
towards the door.
"no. Let him calm down himself, Lez.." Jeremey scolded
quickly. I sighed, but nodded. After awhile of us talking to
ourselves, and somewhat to Jessie we left to go get food in the
caferteria. After we ate, Jeremey left to try and find John, as the
rest of us went back to Jessie's room, I was silently stirring
my unfinished, vanilla, and rainbow sprinkled ice-cream, I felt
Jamie looking at me, I looked up at her.
"I know what you're thinking.." She sighed,
disspointingly. I chuckled lightly, doubting her.
"this whole thing is not your fault. You can't blame
yourself for Jessie's stubborn-ness, and all of their
stupid-ness that night. They were all drunk, you had no part in
them drinking, then all getting into that car driven by John.. you
had no part in any of it. Even if you say that you could've
stopped him, and begged him more, it wouldn't have worked.
Jessie is just like that, once he has made up his mind about
something, he'll ask people of their opinions.. but wont take
no for an answer, if they object." She said then wrapped her
arm around me. I just nodded, no one else talked. We walked down
the last hallway to Jessie's room when a group of 6 doctors and
nurses rushed past us, and sprinted to Jessie's room. We all
looked at each other with fear for a split second before we too,
sprinted to the room, jsut as we reached the door, it was shut in
our face. We all waited around the door for it to open, and for us
to be told what is going on. After a couple minutes, his main
doctor came out and looked at me, and let me in by myself.
"he woke up, he's little alarmed, he doesn't know
where he is, why he's here, but he's screaming for someone
named Lydia... does... she have any meaning to you?" he
whispered, we were in the corner of the room, I was too focused on
trying to think who Lydia was, to even listen to all of his
screams.
"um.. can I call someone who might know..?" I asked. He
nodded.
"just knock when you're ready to come back in." He
said. I nodded, and walked out of the door, I ignored
everyone's questions and just walked past them, calling
Natalie.
"Hello" She said in a happy voice.
"hey, Nat, can you tell me who Lydia is..." I asked.
"um... why?" She asked slowly, very confused, some what
angry.
"I'm.. just curious.." I chuckled.
"oh, and that was Jessie's ex girlfriend... they went out
for a really long time, then was depressed after she broke up with
him because she lived in Florida and was moving or
something.." She sighed, not interested. I cleared my
throat.
"tha-thanks..." I stuttered, walked back to his room,
then knocked. I waited for one of the doctors to come back, once he
did, I lead him back to the same corner as before and explained to
him everything that I knew.
