Chasing
Summer
Chapter Four
Jasper caught my eye, then looked
at Jack, then winked at me. I rolled my eyes.
Me, Jack, Jasper, and a few other guys (hot, sandy, shirtless
guys) from the volleyball team were sprawled on the sand
around a small bonfire.
My back was freezing cold, but my toes and legs were roasting in
the heat of the fire.
Jack offered me the bag of Cheetos, and I grabbed one, threw it
in the air and caught it in my mouth with a loud crunch.
He clapped and brushed some cheesy dust from the corner of my
mouth with his thumb.
"Man, I wish I could do that..."
"Try it," I sugguested, "It's easy!"
"The last time I attempted that trick, I ended up nearly
choking on the chip. Not cool."
"Wow, you being uncool? noooo."
He flicked my arm.
"Sarcasm is not appreciated."
"Sorry."
I tilted my head back to watch the darkening sky, and I was
surprised, but happy, when Jack lightly slipped his arm around my
shoulders.
I couldn't fight the smile off my face. I was sitting on a
beach, at the start of summer vacation, with a smoking hot,
shirtless volleyball player, and also my best friend.
Jasper made a small squealing noise next to me, and I hoped Jack
didn't hear it.
We sat like that for a while, watching the sparks splutter and
hop from the top of the fire and into the night, where they
disappeared before falling to the ground.
I softly leaned my head onto Jack's shoulder and let my eyes
slip shut a little.
"Sas... Sas?"
I sat up quickly, "Yeah, Jazz?"
"Hate to spoil your fun, but we should prob'ly head home
now. It's getting late..."
I stood up, shaking the sand off my clothes, and threw an
apologetic glance at Jack.
"Sorry... I should probably..."
"Wait!" he scrambled to his feet too. "Do you have
a pen?"
"I do." Jasper said smugly, and I realised with a small
grin that he had been planning this.
Jack grabbed my arm, and in a messy, loopy scrawl, he jotted down
his cellphone number across my forearm.
"Call me someday - today was fun. Really fun."
I gave him a one-armed hug.
"I had fun, too. Maybe I'll call. C'mon
Jasper."
As the two of us walked back along the dark beach, I couldn't
resist a little happy dance and a shriek of delight.
Jazz joined me in my happy dancing. "Admit it, Sassie. I.
Am. Amazing."
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"Yes."
"Fine."
"What am I?"
".. Amazing."
"That's the spirit."
