taking chances
part
8
"So where is Brittany?" I
asked.
"I don't know." My dad said, pacing around. "Where did she go
last?"
"I was yelling at her and she ran out the door." My mom said
nervously. "She didn't say where she was going."
I touched my necklace. I heard something while I squeezed the key
so hard that it left a dent in my palm.
I walked out the door. My walk turned into a run. I grabbed the
necklace. I didn't hear anything. I stopped running and sat down,
tears leaving my face. I concentrated, letting my mind be free. I
squeezed my key again. Nothing happened. I tried Brian's key.
"Broadway." I heard in a whisper. I turned around.
"Who's there?" I called. "Answer me. Please."
I ran towards the woods. "Brian." I called, hoping he was still
there. It hadn't been long since I'd left the forest. "Brian!"
The tears dried with the wind blowing against my face. When did
the clouds get so dark? I heard a clap of thunder.
"Danielle?" I heard Brian's voice. I ran across my yard along the
edge of the forest to Brian standing there. It suddenly started
pouring. I jumped into his arms and cried.
"What's wrong?" He asked. "Are you okay?"
I looked into his eyes. "Your dad got out of jail. He escaped." I
said and dug my head into his shoulder. "Brittany's gone
missing." I said. "I need to find her." I said into his ear. "I
have to."
"Danielle, the police have it under control." I took my arms away
from him and rested them on his hips. He did the same to me. We
stared into eachother's eyes.
"I'm hearing things." I said loudly over the thunder. The rain
had soaked my clothes and hair and everything else. At least I
left my phone in the house.
"What are you talking about?"
My hand flew to my necklace. I squeezed it. "No." I heard in the
same loud whisper. I felt like I was being haunted.
"Come on, work." I begged the voice. "Work."
"You have to be alone." The voice whispered.
"Let me come with you, then." Brian said. "Please?" He
begged.
"No. You can't. I have to be alone." I mimicked the voice heard
in my head.
"How long will it take?" He asked.
"I don't know. Maybe a week, maybe a day." I said quietly. "I
just know I have to do it alone."
"I won't let you go." Brian shook his head. I think he was
crying, but I couldn't tell due to the rain.
"I have to go." I was crying, and that was for sure. "Trust me on
this one." I kissed his lips gently. "Trust
me."
