The Right Way
#50
We slowly
walked down the open hallway into the warm night air. It was
still light out, so hopefully we wouldn't get lost. I thought
we were just roaming around the hotel grounds, when suddenly Ryan
stopped in his tracks.
By then we were on the beach. Soft
twinkle lights lit up the palm trees behind us as he fished
something out of his pocket. I now felt that this meeting had
some purpose, and my palms began to sweat from nerves. I
couldn't look at him as he pulled the mysterious object out
of his pocket, so I stared at the waves.
"Skye," he whispered. I
didn't move my eyes.
"This won't work unless you
look at me," he said, with a hint of laughter under his
breath.
Now I did look at him. He was standing
there, holding a dark blue box in his hand. I gasped, my mind
jumping to him proposing. But then I remembered we were 16, so my
heart started to slow down.
He took note of my reaction and smiled
sheepishly. "I'm not proposing, silly." He pursed
his lips, trying to figure out how to say whatever he needed to
say. "Okay, I can't think of any way else to say this,
so I'm just going to tell you." With that, he took a
step forward, closer to me.
"Skye, I know I've said this
before, but now I'm serious. I love you, more than anything
in this world. I want to be with you forever and ever, so I'm
giving you this promise ring. To be with me for forever and
ever." I had tears in my eyes.
"Ryan, I can't believe
this," I gushed.
"Well, you better," he said
jokingly. He opened the box, and there was a silver ring with a
vine carved around it. He took it out and showed me the inside,
where "Forever and Always" was inscribed in the hard
surface.
He grasped my right hand and slid it
onto my pointer finger, sending jolts of electricity through my
hand and up my arm. I still bet he didn't know the effect he
had on me.
"Thank you, and I promise." I
looked into his eyes, and saw they were wet. He blinked fast,
trying to hide his own tears. I kissed him slowly.
BRING! BRING! His phone
went off. He fished it out of his pocket and looked at the Caller
ID. "Hey, Natasha," he greeted as he flipped the phone
open. He listened, and quickly said, "We'll be right
there." He hung up and grabbed my hand.
"We're late for dinner,"
he said as he winked at me. We took off running back towards the
restaurant on the hotel site. But my mind was elsewhere, full of
too many thoughts about him.
