Love Never Dies
CHAPTER
31
"It's perfect," I
breathed to the reflection in the mirror. My eyes sparkled as I
inspected the dress that I would undoubtedly choose. White satin
flowed down my body, hugging me in all the right place,
accentuating my hardly-visible curves. The delicate fabric was
decorated with tiny diamonds along my chest, and it was sleeveless.
It pulled in at the waist and, from there down, it puffed out
slightly. I looked the part of a princess. The train was
long, and I was surprised to see how wonderfully fitted and
gorgeous the dress looked on me. "It's like it was made
for you," Charlotte agreed softly. I twisted my torso around
to get a good look. I shook my head and put my face in my hands.
"What's wrong?" Charlotte asked as she gently placed
a cool hand on my bare shoulder. "It's nothing," I
whispered. "You don't like the dress?" her brow
furrowed like she couldn't believe it. "No, no," I
sighed. "I love the dress. I'm just...overwhelmed. I
can't believe this is happening in three months. It's hard
to get my head around it, you know?" Charlotte nodded. "I
know. You're so young to be getting married." I smoothed
my hands over the dress. "That's not it; I'm in love
with Alex. There really was no use waiting. He's the only one
for me. It's just so much stress. I feel like if I'm not
good at being a princess, then I'll disappoint him."
Charlotte smiled at me. "Don't even worry about it. Being
a princess is easy, I've done it all my life. It will take some
getting used to, because you're used to being a small town girl
from the middle of no where. Seriously, Kate, you're going to
be one of the best queens Sanatoria has ever had." I grinned
back at her, "You really think so?" She shrugged.
"Yeah, I really do. Not to mention the fact that you and Alex
are absolutely perfect for each other. It's like two pieces of
a puzzle. You have what he needs, and vice versa. I mean,
you're still both crazily annoying, but..." I smacked her
arm playfully and cried, "Hey!" She shook her head as she
laughed. "The dress is flawless. Really incredible." I
opened my mouth to speak, but my phone rang from somewhere deep in
my purse. Selena's ringtone floated around in the small
mirrored room. I dug around in my purse, still not finding the
phone. Finally, I pulled it out from the very bottom.
"Hello?" I answered. "KATE!" she screamed.
"What?!" I answered, worried now. "You're
famous!" she cried. "You're on the news and
everything! All the papers!" Even though I knew it was coming,
a little part of me was still very excited to hear that news.
Selena continued. "You and Alex are all anyone talks about at
school. You're popular! I'm popular, and it's all
because of you, Kate! And you want to know the best part?" I
was speechless; I tugged anxiously at the dress. "YOU AND ALEX
ARE ON THE COVER OF PEOPLE!" My eyes widened in disbelief.
"People Magazine? No way!" Selena babbled on. I looked at
Charlotte, jaw dropped incredulously. Her face broke out into a
smile and she nodded. "I saw it this morning," she
whispered. I tried to focus on what Selena was saying, but I found
it remarkably difficult. "I'm so excited for the
wedding," she gushed. "Me, too," I mumbled, "I
can't wait to see you. It's going to be really fun."
Even though I was really excited to be Alex's wife, I was
anxious about the wedding. First of all, it was in a week, and I
didn't know if I was ready to take on all the responsibility of
being a queen. I mean, first the wedding, and five days after that,
the inauguration to become king and queen was a lot to process in
only a few days. I absently wondered just how much stress someone
could handle before they reached the breaking point...
Selena kept rambling. "Selena,"
I said abruptly, "I need to go. Charlotte and I are making
some wedding plans." I didn't tell her I was picking out a
dress, because I would have to describe it in length. I would just
send her a picture later, I thought. "Oh, okay," she said
brightly. "Talk to you soon." I hung up and tossed the
phone into the bag. I wandered into the changing room and stripped
off the dress. I looked at the dress again. I pictured myself
walking down the aisle, getting closer and closer to my Alex. I
could imagine that feeling, the feeling I always got when I saw his
face. The butterflies in my stomach, the heat flowing into my
cheeks. It was the best feeling in the world. I picked up the dress
and carried it out to where Charlotte was standing. She used her
credit card to pay for the dress. She wouldn't show me the
price tag.
We both got into her Audi Coupe, and I
placed the dress very carefully in the back seat. I buckled my seat
belt and she pulled on her oversized sun glasses. "You
know," she said, gathering her silky dark hair into a ponytail
at the nape of her neck, "I honestly can't wait for the
wedding. I can't wait to have my new sister." She let her
hair drop and pulled the little silver car out of its parking
space. "Me, either. I've never had a sister. Just idiot
brothers." She laughed. "I have enough of those, too.
Seriously, Nate is the most sarcastic kid I've ever
known." I agreed, and I told her, "I'm so nervous. I
know it will be perfect, because you'll make sure, but for some
reason, I am absolutely freaking out." She sighed,
"Don't worry about it. It'll will be fine, you have my
word." I looked at her. "Thanks, Charlotte. For
everything. I don't think I would have been able to do it
without you." She smiled brightly at me. "That's what
sisters are for, right?"
