homerun
part #73

i woke up really groggy, with bright lights, and my lower abdomen felt non-existant.  i attempted to look around but my eyes hurt too much, so i closed them.  i heard a really loud.
"pat, pat are you there?" from a familiar voice, i just couldn't put a finger on it.
"too loud." i tried to say, but my voice was blurred together.  i then heard a much quieter voice,
"mrs. lickham, pat's very sensitive hearing right now, and he's extremely tired.  we put him under a lot of anesthesia, and he's barely coming out of it now, let him rest."  yes let me rest! i thought.  i then heard a door click shut, and after that i went out of conciousness.  i did that several times in the next few hours, or days.  my concept of time was extremely off.  i finally awoke, to actually open my eyes, and i heard on an intercom,
"pat, are you awake? if you can hear me can you raise your hand or something.?"  i went to raise my left hand, but that was tangled in cords, so i just raised my right one slightly.
"okay, can your mom come in to see you? she's been a wreck."  i just formed my hand into a thumb and i heard the door open and my mom run inside.  i saw her face over mine.  "hey baby, are you feeling any better?" she asked.
"yea, sortof." i said, my voice was scratchy.
"good.  the doctor said the surgery went extremely well, and you should recover somewhat quickly.  isn't that great?"
"yea, it is." i said relieved.  this was out of the way, and i could finally get better.

the days started to blur together.  first it was getting used to eating food, and taking my medicine regularly.  if i forgot i would have to take it right away, or my body would start to reject the organ.  then all of a sudden, i could sit up, and it didn't hurt.  finally they took out the stitches, and i had a huge crescent mark on the left half below my belly button.  the doctor said that it won't go away.  then all of a sudden i could walk around, and they were sending me home with an enormous amount of medicine.  i could get around my house just fine, and the doctor was right, i was healing quickly.  it'd only been a few weeks after my surgery.  i couldn't drive yet, but danny was more than welcome to do that for me.  it was saturday afternoon when i got home.  devon hadn't answered my call, so i called her cell.  it was on, but she didn't answer.  i was starting to get upset, so i called her house.  her mom answered.
"hello?"
"hi mrs. white, this is pat, is devon there?"
"hey pat! how are you feeling?"  she asked.
"great! a lot better, but is devon there?"
"no, she's in the pool, but i'll have her call you back."
"no, is it okay if i run over there now?"
"sure.  she's with blake and alyssa and anthony and chris, so maybe you can bring your bathing suit to swim too."
"i don't think i can do that, but thanks for the offer.  i'll be over in a little bit."
"okay see you soon!" mrs. white said, and i hung up.
"danny!" i shouted.  "you're taking me to devon's now.  please?" i asked.
"sure!" he said with his keys in his hand.  "let's go get your girlfriend back." he said as we got into the car and he drove out of the neighborhood.
