Curveball
Chapter Sixteen
Zach's POV
Why is she saying hi to me? What is she trying to be nice? Yeah like a hi is gonna make up for what happened.Wait if she's trying to make up for everything, that would mean John told her. I saw John talking to her but move on to hang his bag up. As he went to walk past me I grabbed him.
"You didn't tell her did you?" I hissed at him.
"No why?" he answered.
"Because she said hi and smiled at me when I got here."
"Dude maybe she's trying to be nice."
"Hannah Baker and nice to me don't go together."
"I swearI didn't tell her anything Zach."
"Alright."I glanced down to look at her. She was chatting casually with a couple of the guys.I saw Chip standing on the outside of it all. He looked torn and I felt a little bad that he wanted her but knew he couldn't even go after it. But he'd thank me one day, it would be worth it in the long run.
******************
We took the field. Hannah on the mound, Chip in center and me in left. After four innings Hannah had a perfect game going. A whole three kids had hit the ball but they were all outs. Finally a kid got on the good end of one of her pitches and it was headed my way. I was tempted to let it just drop and ruin her perfect game but before I had anymore time to think the ball was in my mitt. The crowd went nuts.
"Nice catch Zach!"Hannah called out. Yeah right she was just glad she still had her perfect game going. From there we got out of the inning. I got a few pats on the back on my way to the dugout for the catch but for the most part no one said a word. Finally in what would be our last half inning, since Hannah had still yet to let up a hit and we were up by four I notced the ponytail standing next to me in the dugout.I glanced at her but didn't say anything. You're not supposed to talk to a pitcher during a perfect game, not that I would talk to her anyways.
"Look I just wanted to say thanks for catching that ball.I know you easily could of let it drop and let the perfect game go.It would of been a bummer but I totally would of gotten it if you did it. Just anyways thanks for making the catch." She then leftto sit by herself knowing no one would be talking to her. Maybe John was right. Maybe she was just trying to be nice to me. Maybe it was a grudge-holding to assume she has some alterior motive to being nice to me. I watched her walk at me and side glance at Chip and smile. Scratch that, she it totally up to something.
feedback? sorry for the short but I felt it was better short and sweet.
