Lies
Chapter 21
Noelle's POV
I was supposed to walk home after Jake and I parted ways, but it was still early. Jake had a ride, so I went home alone. I wasn't due at home for another 40 minutes, though, so I decided to go visit Danielle's house. Then I'd explain to her how awesome Jake was. Hopefully, she'd understand.
Danielle's house was pretty far, but I decided to run there. I was on the track team, wasn't I? This would be good practice; I'd barely run during the summer, but luckily track season was about to start. Thank goodness.
Even with my skill at running, it took me a good 15 minutes to get there, and I was panting by the time I did. I gave myself 5 minutes to talk to Danielle. That's all I'd really need, anyway.
As I jogged up the driveway, I heard someone yelling and screaming inside the house. I cocked my head; that was abnormal. Danielle's parents were calm, cool, and amazing. They'd never yell at Danielle, and I knew Danielle herself wouldn't yell, either. At least, not in that angered way. The voice was vaguely familiar, but I couldn't place it.
Oh, well. As I got closer, though, I heard the sound of something smashing. I winced, wondering what it was. Okay. What was going on there?
I hurried to the front door and began knocking, but no one answered. Then I tried the doorknob, and to my surprise, the door was unlocked. I opened it and let myself in.
Immediately, the smell of alcohol hit me. I gagged; it was thick in the air. The house was dirty, and empty, crusty bottles littered the floor. What was going on? Had I gone to the wrong house?
No. I hadn't. This was definately Danielle's house.
Then I heard the smashing and yelling, and I realized what was happening. There was a guy, his back was to me. His hand was around the collar of a girl's shirt, and he was smashing her head against the wall, hitting her, and slapping her.
I gasped; my heart stopped for a moment. Then I recognized the messy brown hair on the boy, and the one-of-a-kind, gray-black, straight hair on the girl. My eyes widened and I choked. The boy was Jake. The girl was unmistakably Danielle.
Danielle! My friend! What was happening?
"What's going on here?" I blurted out, before I could stop myself.
