   Epilogue
   Shay's P.O.V.
   It was May 26th of my senior year. I had not seen Dustin in about 9 months, but we talked on the phone whenever we could. He was really busy and had completed his training and was now an official soldier in the United States Army. Words could not describe how much I missed Dustin, but I was so proud of him. I just hoped that he was thinking of me too.
   My Dad was doing great and now is a surviver of cancer. The doctors tell him that his survival is a true miracle, but I know that he had some help from my mother and brother Joe from up above.
   ---
   I woke up that morning of May 26, and called Layla over. Today was our senior prom. I was going without a date because I was still in a relationship with Dustin, but Layla was going with a guy named Liam. We got ready got ready together and then we drove to the park in the middle of our town. At our school, the entire senior class has a "Grand March" as its called, where we decorate and use the nicest park to take pictures. All the seniors and their dates walk around in an organized line and friends and parents take pictures. After the Grand March, the limousines take us to our prom venue.
   We got to the park and stepped out of the car.I was wearing an apricot/peach colored gown with a sweetheart neckline and many ruffles on the lower part of the dress. I had jeweled pumps on and diamond earrings in. My hair was pulled back into a chic, low, side bun and my makeup made my eyes pop. I felt so beautiful, but my prom still was not complete because Dustin was not with me.
   I said hello to all my classmates and teachers and took some pictures with people before the March began, but something caught my eye.There was someone standing beyond the crowd of people, on their own. I tried to ignore it at first, but I had a feeling that I should look closer. I walked away from my friends and made my way towards the person standing alone. As I got closer, my heart stopped. There was a man standing with his hands behind his back-and in an army uniform. It was Dustin. I whipped off my shoes, picked up the bottom of my dress and took off running at Dustin. He held out his hands and I jumped into his open arms. Joyful sobs escaped my mouth as Dustin held my close to him and spun me around in the air. He put me down, but I couldn't let go of him becaue I wanted to make sure that this was really happening and that he was really here. We were both smiling uncontrolably and laughing and hugging.
   "I've missed you so much Dustin." I cried.
   "I missed you so much too, love." He replied, kissing my forehead.
   Our faces were so close to eachother as we embraced. I could tell that everybody was staring at us, but I didn't care at all. My life was complete because the only love of my life was with me.
   "I love you, Shay. I have never stopped loving you, and I never will." Dustin told me.
   "I love you too, Dustin." I whispered back as he put his hands on the side of my face.
   Slowly and ever so gently, Dustin leaned in and kissed me. This kiss was the best kiss I have ever experienced. It was passionate and full of love and I never wanted it to end. We pulled away and heard and erruption of applause. I turned around and saw my entire senior class, family, friends, and teachers applauding wildly. Tears brimmed my eyes again and Dustin kissed me on the cheek. I linked my arm through Dustin's and we strolled back to the crowd.
   Ever since Dustin had left, I knew that we were going to be alright, but I did have some doubt.
   But we did it. Our love survived through more challenges and distance than I had ever thought possible. We both realized that this was more than just a summer love, and that we shared a love that would continue forever.
   Miracles do happen, and Dustin was my miracle.
   The End.
   It's over!! "Summer Love" has officially come to an end. Writing this story for you has been an amazing experience and you guys are incredible. I want to thank you all for reading and giving me feedback-you are the reason I keep writing! I am going to take a break from writing far a while, but so I can give myself time to develop a good story for you next time! So bear with me!    Chapter 35
   Shay's P.O.V.
   I woke up the next morining and felt sick to my stomach. I coulnd't sleep at all last night. Dustin was leaving in just a few hours and I couldn't bear to see him go.
   I crawled out of bed and took a quick shower and then dressed in a white flowered crop top, high waisted pink shorts and put on pink jewled earrings. I applied some light make up and dryed my wavy hair. I slipped my feet into white strappy sandels and walked down the stairs.
   "Morning, Dad." I said, smiling when I saw him in the kitchen.
   "Good morning Shay." my dad replied.
   I sat down at the dining room table and opened my phone and saw a text from Layla:
   Hey girl, what time are you going to Dusitn's?
   12:30 I typed back
   mind if I come? Layla asked
   not at all I answered. I shut my phone and went into the kitchen to grab an apple.
   "Shay, honey, we are going to Dustin's house, are you all readey?" My father asked.
   "uhh, ya I just need to grab something in my room." I ran back up the stairs and went straight for my desk. I opened the top drawer and pulled out a little blue book. It was a scrapbook I made for Dustin. It had all the pictures we had taken ove the summer together and I felt that it was the right time to give it to him. I sighed and put the book into my bag and jogged back down the stairs and out the door to the car.
   "Ready?" asked my dad.
   "Ready as I'll ever be."
   He squeezed my hand as we drove to Dustin's house, picking up Layla on the way.
   When we arrived at Dustin's, his entire family was on the front lawn. His little cousins were each taking turns hugging him tightly. I stepped out of the car and slowly made my way over to his family.
   Dustin came up to me and wrapped his arm around me.
   "All set to go?" Dustin's mom asked.
   "Ya, I think so." he responded, tightening his grip on my shoulder. My stomach dropped.
   Dustin let go of me and walked over to his parents. His mom hesitated for a second and then collapsed into her son. I heard her soft sobs muffled by Dustin's t-shirt.
   "It's okay, mom." Dustin whispered. She pulled away and kissed him on the cheek. Dustn then turned to his dad. Dustin's father looked pale and grim. Dustin held out his hand for a hand shake but his dad pulled him in. They hugged eachother in silence and then separated, Dustin's father patting him on the shoulder. Dustin nodded, then made his way around to the rest of the group. He hugged Layla and firmly shook hands with my father who nodded in approval. Once he had said goodbye to everyone, he looked at me.
   "Will you take me to the airport, Shay?" Dusitn asked.
   "Of course." I croaked.
   I linked my arm through his as he brought his suitcase to the car. I got in the front seat and Dustin turned to wave to his family before getting in the car too.
   He continued to wave as we backed out of the drive way and headed for the airport.
   Hi pretties! How are you guys? I hope you liked this chapter, I really enjoyed writing it even though it is so sad! There will be one chapter left and then an epilouge, so those will be coming out soon too!    Chapter 34
   Shay's P.O.V.
   Dustin and I had the best two weeks. We went rollerblading, fishing, and went to a baseball game. We had a scary movie marathon, made cookies, went on a bike ride, went to an amusement park, and went swimming. Dustin taught me how to surf, we went dancing at a club, we watched the stars, went for a hike, and flew kites.
   But Dustin was leaving tomorrow and I couldn’t bring myself to think that our summer was ending.
   -----
   Dustin and I awoke on my living room couch. We were watching the show ‘Friends’ last night and fell asleep.
   “Good morning, beautiful.” Dustin whispered in my ear.
   I snuggled closer to him. “Good morning.”
   Dustin was about to kiss me when the phone rang. I giggled and Dustin shook his head as I got up to get the phone.
   “Hello?” I answered.
   “Hi sweetie.” The voice answered.
   “Daddy!” I cried. I couldn’t contain my joy of hearing his voice.
   “Guess what?” my father asked.
   “What?” the eagerness in my voice growing stronger.
   “Baby I’m coming home.”
   “OH MY GOODNESS!” I cried, jumping up and down. I looked like a little kid on Christmas day, but for me this was 1000 times better.
   I heard my dad laughing on the other end of the line.
   “When? Why? How? Are you cured?” I asked, questions bursting out of me.
   “Shay, breathe.” My father chuckled, “And I am coming home later this afternoon, a nurse will drop me off at our house. The cancer is not completely gone but I am going to have a break in Chemotherapy. The doctors believe that is my progress continues like this, I eventually will be cured.”
   My emotions were all over the place. I started laughing and crying tears of happiness. Dustin stood behind me. I got off the phone with my dad and jumped into Dustin’s arms and he laughed with me.
   “This is great, Shay, really great, now you won’t be all alone when I leave tomorrow.” Dustin said. The sinking feeling in my stomach came back.
   “I know, it’s like I can breathe again. Now you just come back safe and I will be the happiest person in the world.”
   “I promise.” Dustin said and he kissed my forehead, “But I’m afraid I have to go home now. I still have to finish packing. And you can spend time with your dad.”
   “Okay.” I hung my head. Dustin tilted my chin up to face him and kissed me.
   “See you tomorrow, Shay.”
   “Yeah, see ya.”
   ----
   When the nurse’s car pulled into my driveway three hours later, I ran outside. My dad, fragile and pale, sat in the front seat with a massive smile on his face. My hands shook as he stepped out of the car and wrapped his arms around me.
   “It’s good to be home.”

   Chapter 33
   Shay's P.O.V.
   Tears filled my eyes looking at Dustin.
   “Baby, please don’t cry. Pl-please.” I pleaded, my voice shaking. I pressed my face to his chest and listened to the steady beat of his heart. Dustin leaned down and kissed the top of my head.
   “I’m sorry Shay, I am so sorry.”
   I tilted my face up so Dustin’s eyes locked with mine. “Why are you sorry?” I asked.
   “Because I am leaving you. I am leaving you when your dad is sick. You are going to be all alone. And I know that I am going to miss you so much. It hurts to think about leaving you. I am sorry.”
   “Dustin, love, it’s gonna be okay. Please don’t worry about me. I can take care of myself. I am a big girl now. And you will come back. You are just going to work.” I responded, trying my best to make both of us feel better. It wasn’t working.
   “But I’m going all the way to Texas. And who knows where after that. Afghanistan? Iraq? Maybe this is a mistake. Maybe I can just find work here where I will be with you.”
   “No, Dustin, you are going to Texas. Like you said, we have two weeks.” I cried. I rested my injured hand on his shoulder and put my other hand on the side of his face, “We have a lifetime ahead of us, okay?”
   Dustin smiled. “You are right Shay. But I’m sorry for breaking down on you.”
   “Stop apologizing.” I ordered, smiling too.
   He chuckled, “This is why I love you.”
   I laughed with him and then winked, “I know.”
   Dustin pulled me in for a kiss, “So what should we do today?”
   “Hmmm,” I thought out loud, “Let’s do something fun.”
   “You got it.” Dustin grinned, “I also have another idea. Every day for the next two weeks we should do something fun. Something different.”
   “I like that idea.” I replied.
   I was going to make the most out of two weeks. We were going to have the best two weeks possible.

   Shay's P.O.V.
   We both sat in silence for a while, just eating or breakfast.
   After I finished my food I got up and walked to the sink. I was about to put my dish in the sink when it slipped and crashed to the floor, glass shattering everywhere. I sighed and bent down to try and clean up the mess. As I did felt one of the shards of glass slice the palm of my hand.
   "Sh*t." I muttered as I put pressure on my injured hand.
   I felt Dustin come around me and touch my hand gingerly.
   "Shay we have to get you to the hospital."
   "No i'm fine. I am not going to the hospital." I barked through my gritted teeth. I glanced at my hand and wanted to throw up. I saw a deep gash across my palm, blood oozing everywhere.
   "Babe, come on. Let's go." Dustin said again.
   "Please, Dustin, no." I begged.
   His eyes softened as they stared into mine.
   "Okay, but we have to fix you up." Dustin got to his feet and then helped me up. I leaned over the sink watching the blood run off my hand. Dustin was gone for a moment and then came back a few minutes later with a first aid kit. He dried my hand and then took out the gauze from the kit. I watched him as he tenderly wrapped the bandage around and around my hand. When he was finished my hand was firmly wrapped and the bleeding cut off by the pressure of the bandage.
   "Thank you." I said to Dustin, kissing his cheek.
   "Anytime," he replied. A smile spread across his face.
   I was silent again and I leaned in and hugged him.
   "I am really going to miss you, Dustin." I whispered.
   He hugged my tighter, but didn't say anything. I tilted my head up so I could see his.
   For the first time,
   I saw Dustin crying.
   Hello lovies(: How was this chapter? I am sorry it was so boring, i'm just bringing the story to a (slow) close haha. There will still be a few more chapters, so hang in there! I love you all<3

   Chapter 31
   Shay's P.O.V.
   "You are so sweet," I said to Dustin as I hugged him tightly. He pulled me into his lap and we sat in the grass in front of the graves. We sat there for what felt like hours, sometimes talking and sometimes not.
   After a while I yawned and Dustin noticed.
   "Ready to go babe?" He asked.
   "Sure." I replied, yawning again. He stood up first and then held out his hands for me to grab onto so he could pull me up.
   "Goodnight Mom, goodnight Joe." I whispered as we walked back to the car.
   We got into the car and I watched the cemetery fade into the night as we drove away. My eyes started to close and before I knew it, I was asleep.
   ----
   The next thing I knew Dustin was carrying me up the stairs and into my room. I looked up at him and smiled, still feeling sleepy.
   "I'm sorry if I woke you." Dustin said to me.
   "And I'm sorry you are carrying me up the stairs." I answered, giggling a bit.
   "No, I wanted to. And you are cute when you sleep, I didn't want to disturb you."
   He sat me down on the bed and I pulled out an oversized t-shirt and changed out of my dress. Once I was changed I collapsed back onto the bed.
   "Goodnight Shay," Dustin whispered, getting up to leave.
   "Please don't go," I begged, reaching out my hand, "I don't want to be alone."
   Dustin smiled and climbed into my bed next to me. I snuggled against his body and sighed. Dustin kissed my forehead and my eyes fluttered shut again.

   "Morning sunshine." I chirped. Dustin opened his eyes and looked around. I was sitting up, smiling. Dustin pulled me in for a kiss.
   "Good morning, love." he replied once we pulled away.
   We both got up and went downstairs. Dustin decided to make waffles. Once our food was ready, we sat down at the table. I was quiet for a moment, then said, "Hey Dustin, I was just thinking, how much longer to you have until you leave for Texas?" Dustin was going to Texas to train for the army.
   Dustin swallowed and then looked down at his food. " Two weeks."
   I almost choked on my waffles. But I knew this was coming.
   "Oh okay."
   "But we still have two weeks Shay, thats 14 days. 14 days that I am going to spend with you, alright?" He said, leaning over to squeeze my hand.
   He was right. I didn't have to say goodbye yet. I just don't think that I am going to be able to say goodbye at all.
   I have never been good at goodbyes.
   Hi pretties! I'm so sorry that I haven't uploaded in a while! Sophmore year has been craaazzyyyy so far, but hey, i'm back! I was thinking a couple more chapters for this story, and I want to thank you all for sticking by me throughout this entire process, you guys are literally amazing! <3

   Chapter 30
   Shay's P.O.V.
   When I got upstaris I went to the bathroom and decided to take a quick shower.
   I got out and wrapped my bathrobe around me as I walked into my room and went straight for my closet.
   I finally chose an emerald green strapless dress and white heels. I used my blow dryer and then braided a strand of my hair. I applied some make up and I was ready. I grabbed my keys by the front door and left for Dustin's. The rain had stopped but the ground was still wet and the air was a little foggy.
   I arrived at Dustin's house and walked to his door. I was about to knock when the door swung open.
   "Wow." Dustin breathed, "You look...wow."
   I giggled and then smiled, "Thanks. You look great too."
   Dustin was in a pair of dark wash jeans, a grey button-up shirt, and a black blazor.
   He just kissed my cheek, "Lets go."
   We got into Dustin's car and drove into town. Dustin parked outside the fanciest and most expensive restaurant in the area.
   When we got inside, the waiter led us to the table.
   "Babe this is amazing," I said, looking around the restaurant.
   "Anything for my princess." Dustin replied. He squeezed my hand.
   ---
   We had finished our food and were about to leave when Dustin said, "I have something else planned."
   "Oh really?" I asked, feeling more excited.
   "Yeah, so follow me." We left the restraunt and got back into his car and drove off into the night.
   We drove and drove along a winding road for a while until I started to recognize where we were.
   "Dustin what are we doing?" I questined, getting nervous.
   "Just relax, love, and trust me." He answered. I sighed and looked out the window. There was no one on this road and no houses either. Just us and the stars in the sky.
   Finally Dustin stopped the car, got out, and then opeded my door for me. I stepped out cautiously and looked around. We were at the cemetery where my mom and brother were buried. A wave of sadness came over me, and Dustin sensed it.
   "Shay, don't be upset." he wrapped his arm around me adn we walked toward the tombstones. The moon was so bright so we could make our way along the path.
   We arrived and I looked at the graves our in front of me. Dustin looked me in the eyes and said,
   "I wanted to meet the rest of your family."
   Hey guys! Sorry for the boring chapter, but hey, feedback? This story is coming to a close soon, but there are still a few chapters left, so don't worry! I will also be giving you an epilogue! So keep reading(: I love you all <3

    I kissed her, longer and harder. The rain was pouring all around us, but I didn't care, and I could tell that Shay didn't either. I broke away and pulled her in for another hug. Her cheek was on my chest. I sat down on the sand and pulled Shay into my lap. It felt like everything was okay again, like my life was complete. Shay looked up at me and smiled and then cradled her head in my neck. I heard her sigh as she snuggled deeper into my arms. We sat like this for a while, but then I felt Shay shiver.
    "Come on, babe. Let's go." I told her, standing up and then helping her up as well.
    "Okay," she answered, let's go back to my house."
    ----
    We arrived at Shay's house and sprinted inside, trying to avoid getting even more wet. She led the way grabbing onto my hand and laughing the whole time.
    I shook out my wet hair and Shay laughed even harder.
    "Dustin! you are splashing me in the face!"
    "Sorry!" I apologized, laughing myself. I put my arm around her, "Hey, by the way, I would like to make the dinner date up to you. Wanna go out tonight?"
    "Sure," she chirped, a smile spreading on her face, "I will go get changed."
    "And I will come," I said winking at her and following her up the stairs. Shay rolled her eyes and shooed me back down the stairs.
    "Fine, fine. I will let you get ready. I should go get changed myself. Meet you back here in an hour?" I said.
    "Okay," Shay replied and then she turned back around and pecked me on the lips.
    I walked out of Shay's house and got into my car. I was about to pull away when my phone started to ring. I looked at the name blinking ont he screen and shook my head. It was Lucy. I ended the call and then went to her contact in my phone.

    Shay's P.O.V.
    I parked my car in the beach lot and stepped out into the cool, breezy air. I slammed my car door and folded my arms over my chest. I stumbled to the beach with my chin tucked down. The wind was blowing the hair around my face.
    I saw Dustin standing a little ways off down the beach and I paused. I sucked in a a breath of air and kept on trudging through the sand until I was a few feet behind Dustin. He was facing the ocean, looking out into the distance. I came up beside him, looking at the darkening sky.
    "Oh, uh, hey." Dustin said.
    "Hi." I replied.
    We stared at eachother for a moment, until I looked away. The awkwardness of the situation was practically swallowing us entirely.
    "Um, Dustin I-" I started, trying to break the silence, but Dustin cut me off.
    "Okay Shay Listen. I wanted to talk to you becuase I know things have been different lately. We ended the wrong way. Actually, I don't know what happened. We argued and you were gone. I can't even tell you how much I missed you. I have been lost without you, as cheesy as that sounds. I've been so lonely without you, especially since my friends have gone home."
    "Wait...You're friends went home? Like back to Boston?" I questioned.
    "Yeah, like a couple of days ago."
    "So Lucy is gone too?" I asked again.
    "Uh huh."
    That little b*tch. She was all the way back in Boston Massachusettes and she was still threatening me. I was such a coward.
    "So uh, Shay all I am saying is that I'm sorry. I know Lucy is kind of, well, over-bearing. And I was so wrong to hurt you like I did. But I promise you, I did nothing with her and she means absolutely nothing to me." Dusitn looked me in the eyes, "I know this probably doesn't mean much, but I asked her to leave."
    "You did?" I asked, almost sounding shocked.
    "Yeah, I felt like she was coming in between us. Well, in fact, she was. So I guess I am trying to say how sorry I am. I love you Shay. You are the only one I love, and the only one I will forever. Can you forgive me?" He asked, taking my hand.
    Tears filled my eyes, but the good kind. They were happy tears.
    "Of course I can, Dustin. And I am so sorry too." I answered and I squeezed his hand. He moved closer to me and wrapped me up in a bear hug. I giggled as he picked me up gently off the ground. He hugged me until we felt raindrops. In a matter of seconds the sky opened up on us. My gaze met Dustin, but we didn't run for cover. Instead, Dustin took his hands and wiped my stringy wet hair from my face as he leaned in.
    and our lips met.

    Shay's P.O.V.
    I was crouching behind the door, trying to listen to what was going on between my dad and Dustin.
    I pressed my ear up against the door and held my breath.
    "I really messed up, sir." Dustin sighed.
    "Everyone makes mistakes, Dustin, remember that." My dad responded.
    "But I don't think you understand. I hurt the most important person to me in the world. And now she doesn't want anything to do with me. I'm dying inside, sir. What have I done?" Dustin croaked.
    "You have to get her back." my father answered simply.
    "But how?"
    "Tell her what you are telling me. Don't be afraid to open up. She needs to know the truth." My dad said.
    "But she doesn't want to speak to me. She doesn't want to be with me anymore." Dusitn sighed again. I put my head and my hands and quietly sobbed. I wanted to be with him. I wanted Dustin so badly. I needed him.
    "Dusitn, son, I know you love my daughter. I know you can treat her right. You just can't give up when a problem comes your way. Relationships take effort and committment. Now, go get her." My Dad told him.
    "Thank you, sir. That means a lot." Dustin replied. I looked through the small window on the door. I could see Dustin stand up to shake my father's hand. I quickly turned around and started to run away, back down the hallway. I ran back out and didn't stop unitl I was in my car. I closed my eyes and rested my head on the wheel. They shot open when my phone buzzed.
    Dustin: Hey can we talk?
    I hesitated then finally typed back.
    Me: ya
    Dustin: Your house?
    Me: I'm not home
    Dustin: um, the beach then?
    Me: It's gonna rain
    Dusitn: I will make it quick. But I just need to tell you right away.
    I inhaled deeply and leaned back into my seat then started my car.
    I was headed to the beach.

    Shay's P.O.V.
    It has been a week since I had last seen Dustin. He called a few times, but eventually the calls stopped. I missed him so much, I wanted to get back together with him. I wanted Dustin to hold me in his arms and tell me everything was okay. But Lucy scared me. I'd gotten a couple nasty texts from her, warning me to keep my distance from her and Dusitn. I was too afraid to stand up for myself.
    Lucy: Hey little b*tch, it has been good not seeing u around lately (: lets keep it that way.
    Lucy: Hi Shay, aka the biggest wh*re I know, I bet u r missing Dustin. Well, he doesn't miss u or care about u, so don't u dare think of coming back around ever again.
    Lucy: sup sl*t. As u kow, u r dead to me and Dustin. In fact, he hasn't even mentioned u...at all. Maybe u will just go and die for real now.

    It was 4:00 in the evening and I was sitting in my house, like I had been the whole week. I needed someone to talk to. But Layla was out with some new guy on some date and I had no one else. There was once person who could make me feel better right now: my dad.
    I got up and got dressed in a white, longsleeved cable-knit sweater, maroon skinny jeans, and grey toms. I threw my hair into a messy bun and then grabbed my keys by the door. I walked outside into the storming weather. The rain hadn'ts started yet, but the sky was dark and the wind was howling. I shivered and hopped into my car.
    I was driving and passed Dustin's house, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. Maybe he was happy, and I would learn to live with this and move on. His car wasn't in the driveway, so he was probably out with Lucy. I turned away from his house, blinking back tears, and kept driving towards the hospital.
    Once inside, I made my way to my dad's room. I said hello to all the nurses and doctors on my way. I had gotten pretty comfortable around here now.I stopped in the cafeteria to get a diet coke and then I rode up the elevator to my dad's floor. I was about to enter when I stopped. I heard voices.
    One voice was my Dad's, but the other one I recognized too.
    It was Dustin.

    Shay's P.O.V.
    "I missed you a lot too, Lucy." Dustin answered, putting his hand on her forearm.
    I was frozen for a minute. I was numb. I turned away from what I saw and ran to catch up with Adam and Matt. I wanted to say something, but my mind was blocked.
    I sat down at the table and tried to hold a conversation with Matt and Adam, but I was to distracted. I kept looking at Dustin and Lucy laughing at the other end of the table. Lucy was flirting with Dustin,
    My Dustin.
    "Shay, are you okay?" Adam asked, motioning to my clenched fists.
    "Oh, uh, yeah," I breathed through a tight jaw. I looked over to Dustin for a moment and saw him reach out to hold Lucy's hand across the table.
    That was it.
    "Excuse me," I growled to Adam and Matt, who nodded, looking concerned. I sat up from my seat and stormed past Dustin and Lucy. When Dustin saw me coming, he removed his hand from Lucy's.
    Hot tears formed in my eyes. I wasn't just hurt, I was angry.
    I was outside the restaurant when I heard footsteps behind me, but I didn't turn around.
    "Shay!" Dustin called. I ignored him.
    "Shay!" He cried again, this time grabbing my shoulder and spinning me around, "What's wrong?"
    "What's wrong?" I hissed, "What's wrong?"
    "Please, what's going on?" He begged.
    "Nothing, nothing at all," I sarcastically chirped, "In fact, I love it when I see my boyfriend flirting with another girl."
    "Come on Shay, it's not like that." He sighed.
    "Oh no? Because i'm pretty sure you are treating her like she is your girlfriend. You haven't even said one word to me since we got here." My voice started to crack and I was almost yelling.
    "Baby, listen, she is just a friend." He said as he put his hand to my cheek. I slapped it away.
    "Just a friend my a*s. Now tell me what is really going on." I barked.
    "Fine. " Dustin replied, running his hands through his hair, "Lucy was my girlfriend from back in Boston. We broke up before I moved here because we thought a long distance relationship would be too difficult. We thought we would be better off if we ended it before I left." He inhaled deeply as if he was holding his breath before I reacted.
    "Of course. She is the ex you still have feelings for, the ex that you still loved when you broke up." I snorted. I knew what Lucy's main intentions were now-to get Dustin back.
    "Loved, Shay, loved. I love you now."
    "I'm having a really hard time believing you right now. Why didn't you tell me about her? Did you honestly think that you could keep this from me, knowing that Lucy and I were going to meet eachother tonight?" I shouted, "I can't even imagine what went on between you two today when I wasn't with you."
    "So you don't trust me?" Dustin asked. I could hear the hurt in his voice, but soon that hurt turned to anger too. "You know what Shay? Think what you want. So much for that trust bullsh*t you tried to pull on me when Chase told me you cheated on me. I trusted you, but I guess here we have a double standard."
    I was caught off guard when he brought Chase up, and I exploded. "But I saw you flirting with Lucy. I saw you two acting like a couple! I can't even believe you are doing this to me. Dustin. I don't even know who you are right now. But you know what? Have fun on your 'date' with Lucy. I'm sure beneath that snobby, slutty personality, she is a wonderful person." The sarcasm basically dripped off my tounge with the last sentence. I turned back around and walked away from Dustin. I kept waiting for him to chase me down and make everything alright again. I waited for him to chase me and fight for me, for us. But you know what?
    he didn't come.

    Shay's P.O.V.
    I pulled myself out of my bed and walked to my closet. I decided that today I was going to clean my house. I threw on grey baggy sweatpants, a pink sports bra, grey nikes, and then tied my long hair into a messy ponytail. I added a black bandana around my head as a headband. I grabbed my ipod off my nightstand and slipped the earphones into my ears. I started off listening to Cher Lloyd’s ‘Want U Back’ and after a while I switched to ‘We are Never Ever Getting Back Together’ by Taylor Swift.
    At least four hours must have passed by the time I finished the downstairs rooms, and I was exhausted. I collapsed on to the couch and right as I closed my eyes, the doorbell rang. I groaned and got up off the couch and shuffled to the door.
    “Hey gorgeous,” Dustin said as he leaned down to kiss me. He picked me up off the ground and spun me around.
    “What was that for?” I laughed when he finally put me down.
    “I missed you,” He replied simply.
    I just shook my head a pulled him into the house and onto the couch. “The house looks nice.” Dustin noted.
    “Thanks, it took me all day and now I’m so tired.” I said, resting me head on a pillow on the sofa.
    “Move over,” Dustin ordered, and I shifted so Dustin could lay behind me. He wrapped his arms around me and I snuggled closer to him. I reached out used the remote to put on the TV.
    ‘Jaws’ was on and Dustin begged me to watch it. I agreed but soon I was asleep in his arms. I woke up two hours later feeling much better.
    “How was your nap?” Dustin asked kissing the top of my head.
    “Great,” I replied
    “By the way, do you want to go out tonight?” Dustin asked.
    “Sure,” I answered, “what are we gonna do?”
    “I thought that I would introduce you to my friends tonight.” He offered.
    “Sounds fun, I just need to get ready.” I said as I got up off the couch, “Come help me pick out my outfit.” I pleaded, dragging Dustin with me.
    In my room I made Dustin sit on my bed while I tried on dresses for the dinner date. I finally decided on a pink, long-sleeved dress with lace, black pumps, pink earrings, and a chunky black bracelet.
    After I got changed, we drove to Dustin’s house so he could get ready. I picked out dark jeans, a white t shirt, and a navy blazer for him. Dustin told me that we were meeting his friends at the restaurant, so we went straight there.
    -----
    Inside the restaurant, Dustin spotted his friends: two boys and a girl.
    “Guys, this is Shay,” Dustin said introducing me, “and Shay this is Matt, Adam, and Lucy.”
    “Hi Shay,” Adam said, leaning forward to shake my hand.
    “Hey,” I responded, shaking his hand.
    “You did well, Dustin,” Matt joked, raising his eyebrows at me and then at Dustin.
    We all just laughed and Dustin put his arm around me.
    Lucy looked at me and smiled, but it was more of a smirk. I could have sworn I saw her roll her eyes.
    “Your table is ready.” A waitress signaled.
    We all began to follow the waitress, but I noticed Lucy stayed behind for a moment to stand next to Dustin.
    “It’s so great to see you again Dusty,” Lucy purred in Dustin’s ear.
    I turned around just in time to see one of her hands stoke Dustin’s arm and the other one run down his back.
    I felt like I was going to be sick.

    Shay's P.O.V.
    "Please stop crying baby." Dustin asked, rubbing my shoulder.
    "I'm trying but this is big news!" I sighed, burying my head in his neck.
    He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me down onto the blanket. I curled up and pressed my body into Dustin's. I could feel the warmth radiating off his body. It felt like we stayed like that for hours, and eventually, the tears stopped. I was safe and relaxed.
    I tilted my head up so I was looking at Dustin and smiled.
    "Now there is that beautiful smile." He said, a grin spreading on his face as well. I rolled over so I was laying on Dustin's chest, my face just inches from his.
    "Dustin, I'm ready." I whispered, kissing him swiftly on the lips.
    "You are?" He replied, kissing me again.
    "Yes, I want you. And its my birthday." I winked and all Dustin did was laugh.
    Before I knew it we were back at me house, and Dustin carriying me through the front door and up to my room, his lips never parting from mine. He layed me on my bed,every kiss getting more passionate. This was the night I had been dreaming of. Dustin was mine and he was perfect.

    I woke up under a blanket, my head on Dustin's chest and our legs intertwined.
    "Good morning, love." He smiled, kissing the top of my head.
    "Hey there handsome," I answered.
    He picked up my hand, playing with my fingers.
    "So what are we gonna do today?" I aksed, putting my hand over his.
    "Hmm, well I kinda have plans." He said, avoiding my gaze.
    "Oh, really? With who?"
    "Well, with some friends from back in Boston. I am sorry Shay, I totally forgot." Dustin replied.
    "No babe, it's fine." I said. I sat up and looked back at Dustin.
    He looked uneasy. "Really," I insisted.
    "Okay, but I will be around later." He said and sat up too. Our eyes met and he smiled, "You are so beautiful."
    "Oh stop it," I giggled, "Now come on, get up. Don't make your friends wait."
    Dustin got dressed and walked over to me where I was still sitting on the bed.
    "One more kiss?" He pleaded. I rolled my eyes and got on my knees. Dustin bent down and I wrapped my arms around his neck. I pressed my lips onto his, giving him the most intense kiss I could in 10 seconds. When I pulled away, Dustin took a deep breath. "Wow, do I have to leave?" I playfully smacked him on the arm and shooed him out of my room.
    Once he was gone I sighed and flopped down onto my bed. I was hurting so bad inside. I didn't want Dustin to join the army. What if something happend to him? But I couldn't let him know that I was so upset; it was to important to him.
    I would just have to hide the pain, like I did with everything else that ever hurt me.

    I was on the blanket in the backyard when Dustin came running out.
    "Shay, I'm so sorry." He said, putting his hand on my shoulder. I stood up, getting frustrated now.
    I saw Dustin smile when he saw i was wearing his sweatshirt. I looked past his smile and stared at him.
    "Dustin, can you please just explain to me what the heck is going on here?"
    "Don't worry, babe. Everything is fine." He tried to reassure me.
    "No, it's not fine." I shot back. "Listen, Dustin, I don't want to fight. But come on, we can tell eachother anything. Please.."
    "I really didn't want to do this tonight, Shay. Believe me. This was not my intention."
    "I don't care. I will understand. I just can't have you running back and forth between me and your family all night."
    "No, No, you are right." He sighed and pulled me into his lap.
    "Shay, love, I am joining the army."
    Dustin's P.O.V.
    The look on her face made me want to hug her and never let go.
    "Wh-Wh-What?" She choked out, '"Please, no. You can't leave me. You just can't." Then she collapsed into my arms. I heard her soft sobs and her tears began to stain my shirt.
    "Shhhh, baby, it's okay. Everything is gonna be alright. "
    "You don't know that though! You don't! You may leave and never come back! I cannot live without you Dustin. I am telling you I can't."
    "Shay, please, relax. I am right here. And don't think like that. I will always be here for you. But this is what I have to do." I replied, trying to bring here out of her hysterics.
    "You don't have to do anything!" She wailed.
    "Listen, when I was younger, I watched my dad go off to war. I looked up to him so much. He was my hero, saving lifes, protecting our freedom. But after a while I noticed something. My dad was different. He was angry all the time and even got violent. My dad was no longer my hero. He was too disrespectful. He didn't treat his job like he should But i want to be different. I want to be that brave soldier that represents the USA." I stopped when I noticed Shay was silent. She was staring at me with wide, tear filled eyes.
    "Gosh, I never knew this meant so much to you." She paused again, "But why is your family so mad at you?"
    "They think I am making a huge mistake, My mom is afraid for me, I know that. And like I said, my dad has changed. I don't what he is thinking anymore. But you have to understand, this is what I was meant to do and I have to make decisions for myself now." I answered.
    "You're right. I am not gonna keep you from what you want.." Shay put he hand through mine.
    " But you are the only stable thing in my life, and you can't leave me. I don't thik you realize that if you are gone, i have nothing." Shay looked down. I put my both my hands on the side of her head and brought her gaze to mine.
    "Shay, the last thing I want to do is leave you. I will never, ever leave you. Nothing in this world can keep me from getting back to you." I told her, putting my nose to hers.
    "Promise?" She asked.
    "I promise." whispered back..

    I pulled away from Dustin and eyed him suspiciously.
    "What is that supposed to mean?" I asked.
    "It's..nothing..." Dustin mumbled, "But nevermind! Come on babe, follow me." He smiled and slipped his hand through mine. I sighed and decided to leave it alone. Knowing Dustin, eventually I would find out what he meant, but right now it wasn't my priority.
    He dragged me along the side of his house. I could still hear Dustin's parents fighting inside, and I shivered. Dustin must have noticed and squeezed my hand.
    When we got aroumd to the back of the yard, I gasped. Dustin had recreated our first date, but added it a little more too. Candles lined a blanket layed out in the grass and made a pathway to his pool. I put my other hand to my mouth and just stared in shock.
    "Happy birthday, love." He said, pulling me in for a hug.
    "You are amazing!" I cried, hugging him tighter.
    "Come on princess, wanna go for a swim?" he winked. The sky was darkening and I almost skipped to the pool.
    Dustin released my hand and ran towards the side of the pool. He ripped off his shirt and cannonballed in.
    "Dustin!" I laughed, drying the water from my face. He grinned, flipping the hair from his eyes.
    I shrugged and took off my shirt and capris and jumped in after him. He grabbed me by the waist and swirled me around in the water. I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him, harder and harder each time. He pushed me to the side of the pool, rubbing my waist and the small of my back. Our tongues collided and I wrapped my legs around his waist. Dustin kissed my jawline and moved down my neck. I pulled him closer, kissing him deeper, wanting more. I stopped and parted my lips.
    "I love you, so much Dustin." I whispered, in between our next kiss.
    "I love you too, Shay. I have never loved anyone more. " He repiled. We both stopped, and opened our eyes. I could feel the electricty between us as we gazed at eachother. I felt like I was living a dream: like I was inside a movie.
    Dustin was about to pull me in for another kiss when someone screamed,
    "DUSTIN!" We both peeled apart and Dustin jumped out of the pool.
    "What the h*ll do you want now?" He grumbled.
    "In the house, now." His father hissed.
    Dustin turned to face me, "I'm sorry Shay, I will be right back." He inhaled deeply and stomped off into the house.
    I climbed out of the pool and made my way over to the blanket. Dustin's sweatshirt was on the ground, and I slid it on. His smell filled my nose and I put the hood on and layed down. I brought my kness to my chest and snuggled farther into the sweatshirt.
    What was going on here? I thought.

    Shay's P.O.V.
    "Bye Daddy," I said as I pecked him on the cheek. I walked with him into the hospital until a nurse came and sat him down in a wheelchair. "You come home soon, you hear?"
    He smiled, "Anything for my baby girl." I waved goodbye and exited the hospital. I was walking back to my car when I got a text.
    Dustin: Hey birthday girl, are you busy tonight? (:
    Me: Nope! What time are you thinking?
    Dustin: 7:00, my house xx
    Me: See you then (:
    I smiled as I shut my phone. This day was turning out to be perfect.

    It was about 5:30 when I got back to my house and I decided to change out of my summer dress into jean capris and a white lace, short-sleeved top with a hot pink bandeau underneath. I slipped on a stack of bracelets and left on the necklace with my mother's ring. I walked back downstairs and made myself a snack while I waited for the clock to tick closer to 7:00. When 6:45 came around I decided to leave for Dustin's, and it was 6:55 when I arrived at his house I was walking up to the front door when I heard the screaming.
    "Young man do you know what you are getting yourself into? Don't you dare think that you are ever getting away with this" a woman shrieked. I was guessing it was Dustin's mom
    "It is my life, don't you get that?!" I heard Dustin scream back.
    "Don't you dare talk to your mother that way! Do you hear me?" Dustin's father yelled.
    I was crouching next to the door, terrified about what was going on inside. I had never heard Dustin's family fight like this.
    "Oh My God, you will never understand, you controling a*shole!" Dustin shouted his voice getting really low, meaning he was getting really heated. I winced when I heard a smack.
    "You are such a ungrateful d*ckhead. If I ever, EVER hear you speak that way towards me agian, you will regret it." Dustin's father growled. I heard footsteps and took off running back towards my car. The front door to Dustin's house flung open and I spun around. Dustin stood in the doorway, a purple mark forming below his eye and blood flowing from his nose. He wiped his face with his shirt and began to walk in my direction. I whimpered and ran towards him, wrapping my arms tightly around him.
    "Oh My Gosh-" I cried, bringing my fingers up to lightly stroke his bruising cheek.
    "Babe, I'm...I'm so sorry." He whsipered. burying his face into my neck.
    "Why are you sorry?" I aksed tilting his chin up.
    "Becuase I ruined your birthday surprise." he answered.
    "You didn't ruin anything!"
    "I-I just never want to hurt you." He said, running his handthrough my hair.
    "Never," I sighed kissing his lips gently. I paused when I thought aboout what he had said.
