Small Town Girls, Big Time Secrets
Chapter Six: Broken Glass, Broken Heart, Broken Girl
The first thing Kaylinn noticed when she opened the door to her and Aubrey's room wasn't the fact that the place was a complete and utter mess or that there were her and Aubrey's suitcases by the door, pink and purple, but that Aubrey was curled into a ball on her bed. Kaylinn took a cautious step inside. Crunch! Broken glass? Now Kaylinn knew something deffiantely went wrong. Very wrong.
"Aubrey?" Kaylinn says in a soft voice, "Wh-what happened?"
Aubrey dosen't bother to answer and just stares at Kaylinn. Kaylinn walks over to Aubrey's bed and sits by her unmoving body. "Aubrey, you have to tell me. Please."
"I saw him. He was with. With-" Aubrey breaks off and starts to tear up. She tries to compose herself and says, "Another girl. I saw him with another girl." And that's when she starts crying again. Kaylinn has no clue to what to say. She wishes she knew, but she can never find the right words to say in these kind of situations. So Kaylinn did what she does best, stay silent. Not talking, just sitting there.
A good 30 minutes went by and Kaylinn couldn't stand it any longer, "Why are our suitcases by the door and look like they are packed?"
Aubrey sits up in bed and says, "We are going on a road trip. Tomorrow."
"What?!" Kaylinn blurts out in surprise, "Tomorrow?! I still have to pack! Aubrey this is absolutely cra-"
Aubrey interrupts her, "Calm down. I've already packed for you. And yes, this may be crazy, but I need to get away from this town. I have to."
Kaylinn nods her head in understanding. She knows what Aubrey must feel like right now. Although she might not know the feeling of being cheated on, she sure knows the pain of heartbreak. And with that thought, Kaylinn has a flashback.
"Hey, K. Let's go somewhere more private. I need to talk to you." Kaden whispers in Kaylinn's ear as he pulls her into his room. It was Kaden's pre-graduation party and his whole family was at his house. It was packed.
What romnatic thing has he planned this time? Kaylinn thought with neverous excitement. She loved when he surprised her with things. But as Kaden shut the door, she got this feeling that it wasn't going to be a good surprise.
Kaylinn shakes the horrible memory away. Thats the first time she has thought about that night in a long time. She had purposely blocked it out and she could barely remember the details, unless she really thought about it. And she wansn't about to think of all those nights she cried herself to sleep and of all the mean thoughts she had in her head about herself. Kaylinn knew she had gotten better when Kaden came into her life. She was finally happy. She starting to be happy with herself and she would rarely be sad. But after that awful night at Kaden's pre-graduation party, Kaylinn could feel herself slipping back into the dark and scary hole she was in before. And ever since then, Kaylinn has had to fight it.
But right now, Kaylinn knew her and Aubrey had to take this road trip. It would be good for them both. Kayinn turned toward Aubrey and said, "Looks like we're having a road trip." This ought to be interesting. Kaylinn thought to herself as AUbrey smiled a little sad smile at her.
But what Kaylinn forgot to think was something very important.
    To expect the unexpected.

    Chapter Five: Untidiness
Aubrey slammed the dorm room door and walked angrily to her side of the room. She had clothes everywhere on her bed, and frustratingly thew them on the ground. She got under the covers and closed her eyes. She imagined somewhere far away from here.
She thought about her road trip her and Kaylinn were supposed to have so many years ago. But it never happened. She wanted to go now. She wanted to be anywhere but Kansas City. She hated this town and every single person in it right now. All she could feel in her body was aching. An aching pain to do something. So she got up quickly from her bed, took a lamp, and tossed it across the room.
    Crash.
She watched the glass shatter across the floor. She was going insane. She had to leave. She had to get out of here. She grabbed her suitcase from under her bed and threw everything in it. Untidy, of course. She was always untidy. Ever since she was just a little girl. Kaylinn always helped her pack when she went places, but now Kaylinn would be very mad. Extremely.
Because now Aubrey was grabbing Kaylinn's hot pink suitcase and running to her closet, which yes, was color coordinated. She grabbed everything she could, threw it in the suitcase and grabbed everything else her best friend might need. She zipped both suitcases up and set them by the door. She didn't know where her best friend was. While she waited, she got in her jewelry case.
And there, placed so neatly, was her necklace Troy had given her on their year anniversary. She picked it up so gently. It was a heart, with real diamonds all around it. And it was absolutely gorgeous. The necklace sat on top of a picture of him and her. It was the only picture Troy had taken with her that she had printed. She remembered the day so clearly...
"Congratulations baby." Aubrey said smiling, kissing her boyfriend on the cheek.
"Thank you." He smiled widely, then went and gave his mom and dad a hug. They were never fans of Aubrey, she just had that feeling. But she was always polite to them.
"Thanks for coming mom and dad. I love you both." He gave them both hugs.
"Hey deary, could you take a picture for me?" His mother said in her loud, obnoxious voice.
Aubrey HATED when she called her deary. "Of course." She took the picture and snapped one. "Can you get one of me and Troy?"
Both parents stared at her blankly.
    Troy added, "Please?"
"Fine, but quick honey." His mother rolled his eyes and held the camera up, while Aubrey scurried to his side.
She looked at him and noticed how handsome he looked in his cap in gown. He had just finished his masters. He was going to be an amazing businessman and an amazing dentist. He was going to provide for her and never leave her side. She smiled at him, then looked at the camera.
    Flash.
Aubrey stood by the door, waiting for her best friends arrival, because they were leaving. Not sure where, but anywhere. Everything was going to change. Just like the people in pictures do. They change.
In the flash on an eye, everything can change.

    Chapter Four: No call
As Kaylinn put on her running shoes, she couldn't stop feeling like something has happened. It's been four hours since Aubrey left and it only takes an hour to get to Troy's. She usually texts Kaylinn to let her know she made it okay, but Kaylinn's cell hasn't rung once since Aubrey had left. This could either mean something good or something very, very bad has happened. Kaylinn would like to think it was something good, but her gut feeling is pointing her towards the latter. And that's not a good sign.
Kaylinn throws her shoulder length blonde hair into a messy ponytail, surprised all of her hair will make a ponytail. She walks outside and heads toward the local track her and Aubrey walk at least two or three times a week. They started walking the track their first summer of college. It was a really nice day and they had nothing to do, so being the health nuts they are (not very true, although they were both thin) decided to walk this track. And thus, a weekly must do was born. No matter how busy or how much homework they had, they ALWAYS made time to walk that track.
Except Kaylinn doesn't walk the track, she runs. What is with you? Calm down! Kaylinn thought to herself as she realized that she was running so fast she tripped over her own feet. She limps over to the nearest bench and looks down at her bloody knee and skinned elbow. Too bad Aubrey wasn't here, she'd be freaking out over the blood. Kaylinn thought as she wiped away some grass on her leg. Aubrey hated blood. She couldn't look at it without almost throwing up. And yet, she tortures herself watching all these slasher movies. Kaylinn and Aubrey loved scary movies, even if they had to go in the same bathroom stall in their dorm later that night because they thought they were going to die.
Kaylinn laughs as she heads back to the dorm to clean up. The first thing she does when she gets to the room, is check her phone. Still no call or text. Now Kaylinn was really starting to worry. As she got out the band-aids, she decided that if Aubrey hasn't called in the next hour, she was going to call her. Maybe she was just overanalyzing this, like everything else. Kaylinn usually overthinks things. Everyhting had to be perfect with Aubrey and Troy. He's perfect for her, she's perfect for him. They're the perfect couple and perfect couples are always perfect...right?
    She was dead wrong.

    Chapter Three: Green. Yellow. Red.
    Stuck at the stoplight.
Ugh, he's going to wonder where I am, Aubrey thought to herself. Troy was never a fan of someone being late. He was always on time, he always said the perfect things, and he was always right. No matter what. Aubrey wasn't the biggest fan of that, but she could live with it. I mean, she lived with Kalinn for three years now and practicially every summer since Kindergarten they were together. Kaylinn was a stubborn girl, but Aubrey loved her to death. Best friends since forever.
They never really fought. Only once. And that was when Kaylinn's high school sweetheart and her broke up. Aubrey never knew why and never bothered to ask. It was a touchy subject for her best friend. No matter how close they were, their were just some things both of them didn't bring up. But Aubrey knew if she ever saw Kaden, she would beat his-
    Green.
Aubrey drove through the light and shook the thought out of her mind. There it was. The gorgeous condo. She would be moving in soon. Or would they buy a house together? Troy never said or even brought up moving in together, for that matter. But he was a busy guy. So she didn't really mind. And she wouldn't tell him if she did.
She pulled in and nearly ran to the door. She had these huge knots in her stomach for some reason. She never felt like this. She went to open the door.
    Locked.
She dug in her purse for her key chain, grabbed her key, and unlocked the door. She really loved this place. It was so antique looking and so proffesional. Aubrey couldn't imagine cleaning this place. She never even cleaned her own dorm room. Kaylinn did that. Aubrey did laundry and made dinner, while Kaylinn did the other stuff. It was for the best. Kaylinn was an awful cook. Aubrey giggled thinking of the time Kaylinn tried to cook her soup when she was sick and didnt take it out of the can, almost blew up the microwave.
    Yes, Kaylinn is a blonde.
Aubrey saw troys shoes at the end of the stairs, so she knew he was here. She checked herself in the mirror. Her hazel eyes were really popping today because she was wearing green. Troy loved that color on her. She tucked one brown lock of hair behind her ear, took a deep breathe, and crept up the stairs. She didn't hear anything at first, but when she got to the door she did.
    A giggle.
A giggle that wasnt Aubrey's. Aubrey opened the door, not even preparing herself for what she would see. And there he was. The man she loved with all her heart, the man that was everything to her, the man that would be waiting for her at the end of the aisle next summer... with another woman. Both of them looked up, startled and shocked. The image was implanted in Aubrey's mind. Troys mouth dropped and the woman hurried to find her clothes.
She was pretty. She had firey red hair and a wicked smile.
"Uh, Aubrey, this isn't what it looks like." Troy stuttered.
She held the tears back. "f**k you Troy Benjamin Foster. f**k you." Then she chucked the ring, hitting him in the face. She heard them both run down after her, yelling for her to stop. But she didn't.
The tears rolled down her face as her world fell apart.

    Chapter Two: Kindergarten.
That's how it all began. Two little girls standing by the number chart, looking for a friend. Kaylinn laughs at this memory, surprised she even remembers it. Kaylinn put down her forensics notes and went to the little kitchen their whole floor shared in their dorm. She needed more coffee if she was going to ace this final. She had to. She just couldn't concentrate for some reason. Kaylinn was wondering if Aubrey had made it to Troy's safely.
Troy. Yes, Kaylinn has to admit, he is pretty freaking gorgeous. But as much as Kaylinn wants to like him, she just can't shake the itching feeling she has of him not being a good person. No one person can be THAT perfect, but Kaylinn just shakes the thought away and heads back to her and Aubrey's room.
Kaylinn can't believe that this is their junior year in college. Her and Aubrey haven't had a free summer since they came to Kansas City. And if they did, it's not like they'd go to Rockerville, even if their family was living there. They both hated that small town and were so happy to get out of there. She was nervous to go back there this summer and see all their old 'friends,' but who Kaylinn was really nervous to see was her high school sweetheart, Kaden, because Kaylinn hadn't seen him since their break up. Kaylinn had loved Kaden so much, she just didn't understand what went wrong.
Kaylinn sighs and flops on her bed. She can't study anymore. She might have gotten the brains between her and Aubrey, but Aubrey diefinately got the better looks. Guys were always hitting on her when she and Kaylinn went out, and sometimes, Kaylinn would wish just for once they would notice her first. She could never admit this to Aubrey, though. Kaylinn couldn't stop thinking about Aubrey going over to Troy's. She just had this feeling that something really bad was going to happen.
    If she only knew.

Small Town Girls, Big Time Secrets
    Chapter One: Maroon 5.
Aubrey was definitely a fan of this band. She blared "She Will Be Loved" as she drove through Kansas City, Missouri. Her roommate/best friend had never been a fan of this band until recently. Her best friend had been studying for her forensics final at UMKC in their dorm when she had left.
It was their junior year in college at UMKC and it was already almost over. Aubrey was so psyched to finally have a free summer. She hadn't seen anyone since her and her best friend had left their small town life at Rockerville. They had always hated living there. At a young age they both got on the internet, looked up the farthest away college, and set their hearts on going there. And they accomplished it.
They never visited Rockerville. Never even saw their family. Their family came to them. They just wanted to be away from every single person there. Aubrey was so excited to get a full golf scholarship to the university and her best friend had gotten a full ride with academics. Her best friend was the smartest person she knew and in a way, she envied that. She envied her life and everything in it. But she never told her best friend this.
When Aubrey convinced her best friend to give Maroon 5 a chance, she finally realized they weren't that bad. They both left the dorm at 2:30 A.M., went to TARGET, and bought every maroon 5 cd they had. They were always doing crazy things like this. Like every Saturday night, at exactly 1:00 a.m., they went to a diner only they knew of called Uncle Sam's. And yes, you could say Uncle Sam's wasn't the classiest place. But it were cheap enough for two college girls who usually just bought coffee and talked to the regulars. Like Frida, a crazy old woman who worked there, that told them stories that made them laugh for hours or an old man named Calvin that always offered them free donuts. Of course they would politely take them, but neither of them tried them, just in case. People can be crazy in Kansas City!
Although they both never told anyone about Uncle Sam's, because it was their secret place ever since freshman year, this is where Aubrey met Troy. Troy had just graduated from college when they met. He was studying to be a dentist and Aubrey knew he'd be the best one yet. She still remembered the first day they met two years ago.
"I'll take one black coffee." her best friend had ordered. "I'm going to go play the jukebox. Anything you wanna hear?"
Aubrey looked at her in a way, "I don't care, but please no Backstreet Boys."
She just smiled, "No promises. Tell me when my coffee is here." and she walked off leaving Aubrey to sit at the bar alone and stir her water with a straw.
"Just water, huh?" A voice said beside her.
She looked at him dumbfounded. "Huh?" She was mesmerized by his looks. He had short blonde hair, very professional looking. He had blue eyes that looked like oceans. He was perfect. Not one flaw on his skin and straight, white teeth.
"You're just having water?" He repeated flawlessly. His deep voice was gorgeous.
She smiled and looked down at her drink. "Uh, yeah. I'm not much of a coffee drinker. I'm more into sweet stuff. My best friend loves it black." She said with a laugh.
"Once you go black, you never go back." He laughed, she joined too.
The rest of the night they chatted and eventually switched numbers. She spent the next week telling her best friend all about this perfect, charming guy. And that's where it all began.
That's where Aubrey was heading now. To Troys condo. He was rich, Aubrey found out later. And very, very smart. She looked down at the rock on her left hand and smiled. It was a gorgeous ring. Just what she had always dreamed off. They would be getting married next summer and it would be perfect.
Just like him. He was perfect in her eyes. But as she drove silently, not listening to the Maroon 5 music anymore, she questioned herself.
If no one is really perfect, what is he hiding?
