    Secrets aren't hidden forever
    chapter 2
    ----
"Kylie where have you been?" My mom yelled to me as soon as I walked through the door.
"School," I lied and went up the thirteen carpeted steps to my bedroom. My mom left me alone after that. Last month, she stopped caring about what I was doing. She gave up on trying to keep me safe. She got so sick of me partying and not hearing a word she said that she just stopped. Just like that, she stopped. I didn't miss it, but I missed her. I missed her wanting to be part of my life. I put in my head phones and turned up the volume. Envelopes slid under the little space under the door. I assumed my brother Nick had gotten the mail. Good to know that he'd rather slide letters under the door than open it and have to make contact with me. I picked up the letters that were all addressed to me. The first was from my aunt Kerri. Aunt Kerri was like a mom to me, although her and my mother did not get along. Aunt Kerri would never stop caring about me and my life. She lived hundreds of miles away in Columbus, Ohio and yet she still found ways to keep up with me. The second read Hamilton High on the top left corner. I threw it on my bed. I opened the letter from my aunt. She asked about school, and Nick and how my dad was. I skimmed through it till something caught my eye. "I know it's rough down there darling, but summer's coming soon. Why don't you come down here and visit your aunt?" Sounded good to me, anywhere but here. I picked up the letter from my school, I dreaded opening it. I started to peel it open, I double checked it had my name on it. Kylie Herrings, it read. Shoot, why can't it say Nick? I wondered. English- D, Calculous- F. A report card? How could this be, I didn't know it was the end of third quarter. Well, at least it wasn't a letter saying that I failed eleventh grade. Physical Education-B, Art-A, AP Bio- D. I had seen enough. I folded up the letter and put it in my top drawer. I spotted a third letter unopened letter laying on the floor. I made out the letters Amanda Allen.

    Secrets aren't hidden forever
    chapter 1
    ----
Nine years ago on this day we swung back and fourth in Washington park, telling each other about our first days of kindergarten. I remember exactly what I told her. "I was scared to get on the bus. I sat next to Tommy, he was nice. We talked about school and family and our pets. Tommy is in my class too. Our teacher is nice. We played fun games. She told me I was really smart. At snack time I talked to a girl Rosie. She was quiet but we talked for a few minutes. Then on the ride home I sat with Tommy and his sister Cassidy," I told her. The whole time I was talking I was watching hawks soaring through the sky above us, and the trees swaying in the breeze. I looked back at her after she didn't acknowledge my story, but she wasn't there. The rusty swing was empty, swinging back and fourth. I looked around the vast park waiting for her to jump out and say "boo!" My eyes started to fill with tears, I ran to her house. No one answered when I rang the doorbell. I cried myself to sleep on her front porch. I woke up to red white and blue lights flashing in her drive way. A tall man dressed in blue picked me up and put me in his car. I was scared and confused, but he brought me home. My mom explained to me that he was a police man and he solved crime scenes. Then why was he here? This was not a crime scene. Had something bad happened while I was gone? Surely she had come home after the park right?
That was the day Amanda Lynn Allen disappeared. She was my best friend. She didn't come home after the park. In fact, no one has seen her till this day. But I am going to find her.
