CHAPTER TWO
“And just to make sure we’re clear, we don’t have to pay for anything?”
“Yes, Ms. Taylor, we’ve discussed this.”
I let out a breath, “And I can bring my whole family?”
“Yes, Ms. Taylor. Anyone in your immediate family can join you.”
“Okay, so I have: Mom, Dad, and my sister Katie...” Carter was grasping my right hand, begging me to let him come. “And here’s the thing...I have this guy who’s, like, obsessed with me and he-” Carter elbowed me.
“Excuse me?”
“I was just kidding; my best friend in the entire world wants to come with me. Can he come, too? Please?”
“I’m sure we could pull some strings...”
“Please? I’ll do anything!”
“Okay, we’ll make sure he can come.”
“Thank you!”
“It’s our pleasure. So that’s a total of five people.”
“Nice math skills,” I mumbled.
“Pardon me?”
“Um, never mind. But, uh, my parents would want to know about this, too.”
“Of course! Have them call this number whenever they can.”
“Okay, they will. Thank you so much.” As soon as I hung up the phone, I started bouncing around and screaming like an annoying Evan Collins fan. Apparently at last year’s school talent show, some hot shot talent agents were in the crowd, and they saw me perform. They thought I had a good voice and potential...
“...and they want me to go meet them in LA this Friday. They even dropped hints of a record deal!”
Carter danced with me across the living room, “Mia Taylor, you are so going to be famous.”
At the time, my heart was pumping out of my chest. My entire life up until that moment had been preparations for now. While Carter kept going on and on and on about how proud he was of me, my mind drifted over to Evan Collins. Had these same people offered Evan this same opportunity a few years back? Had his heart flip-flopped thousands of times as he tried to get a hold of reality?
I shouldn’t have been worrying about Evan. After all, my voice was about to be put to the test. I couldn’t risk having any distractions...but I did...have distractions, I mean.
I know you all already know all of this. Try not to get annoyed by all of this repeated information. I’ve just been interviewed so many times. The words coming out of mouth have been uttered so many times that it seems fake. My life has practically been an open book to the press.
But the press only tells you things they want you to know.
Get ready, that’s about to change.
