the illegals
chapter 3
part 2
Ker-Thudd.
My bottom hit the ground hard. I winced, but I was awake.
Mark seemed pleased.
“Why did you have to go and wake me up?” I asked angrily.
“Because, the meetings about to start. Everyone’s already here and has eaten, and unless you want to miss the whole thing I suggest you get moving.”
I jumped up and ran to the kitchen. I quickly fixed myself a plate with what small amounts of food that was left and found a seat in the back of the second living room.
Mark stood at the front with Eli and a few other guys, some illegals, some Freedomeers. They all tried to hush the crowd so that the meeting could begin.
“Attention!” Eli screamed over the noisy chatter. Everyone slowly quieted down, “Thank you. Mark…”
“It’s so glad to see all of you again.” He said flashing everyone a welcoming smile. “This past month has been pretty hard from what I have heard from most of you. Bryan has apparently been targeting us, he has caused many to be sent to the concentration camps and jails, and had a few killed, but he has spared the life of a few. Ran over there, “he gestured towards me and all the faces of the other illegals looked in my direction, “… ran into Bryan a few days ago. She was severely beaten and might have been killed if it weren’t for Eli and me.”
Everyone applauded their efforts, and I smiled. It was hard to clap with one good arm.
“We need to be very cautious of Bryan, yes he was one of us. He sat right were you all sit today, but his mind was evil and he allowed the government to take control of him, and you see what has become of it.”
A few of the older people in the crowd nodded their heads in agreement; the younger ones shuddered with fear.
If there was one thing that all illegals knew, it was the government was NOT your friend. Society hates you and thinks of you as the scum of the earth. They try to make you believe that no one wants you and you have no hope, but thanks to Mark and the other Freedomeers, we are shown love.
It’s because of them that Eli is optimistic and always hoping for the day where he will be free.
But if you oppose them, you should have no chance at life.

“I have been able to gather a few homes for the younger ones and a few older teenagers that have very tough living conditions.” Mark finished up. The few lucky illegals that got homes were usually younger than 14 or were the sickly, but it was something that we all wanted. I didn’t pay attention because I wasn’t expecting to hear my name, I was preparing myself to return to the streets, but Mark surprised me.
“And finally, Ran and Eli will be staying with my family from now on.”
I looked up at him and he winked. Then I looked at Eli who was in just as much shock as I was. But then he smiled and I felt a smile of relief wash over my face. Could life get better?
