    CHAPTER 7:
"Hey Steve! I have so much to tell you!"
Since I didn't have many new friends in our new neighborhood yet, I had recently confided in Steven for advice.
I waited for a reply, but I got none.
    "Steve?"
    No response.
    "Max?"
    Still no response.
I looked at the clock; it was almost 11:30.
    I sighed.
Steven probably took Max to some late night showing of some super scary movie, they'd probably be home any minute.
I sat down on the couch, and turned on the TV.
Our local news was on, the lady was babbling about some car crash.
It was the third one this week, closer into the city.
People get crazy in Cali, I guess.
I flipped around, trying to find a decent show.
I couldn't stop thinking about how perfect tonight was.
I got to meet a lot of people, but I couldn't remember anyone's names.
But it was okay, because I spent most of the starry night with Ryan.
Getting to know him made moving a whole lot easier.
It wasn't that bad knowing I already made a couple friends, and already had a thing with a really cute guy.
My life was at an all-time high, and I intended to keep it that way.
And it did stay that way, for the next five minutes, until my parents came home.
I heard a door slam, at first thinking it was Steven, but then I heard sobbing.
I stood up, and walked slowly around the corner to find my parents walking into the house.
"Oh thank God!" my mom exclaimed, her tear streaked face smothering me with kisses and then holding me in a bear hug.
I looked out of the corner of my eye to see my dad leaning against the counter, his face in his hands.
"What's going on?" I asked, pulling away from my clingy mother.
My mom sat down at the kitchen table, tears still pouring from her eyes.
    She wouldn't stop crying.
    "Mom?"
    I began to worry.
    "Dad? What's going on?"
He looked up at me, with red eyes.
He too, had been crying, which was a terrible sign.
    My dad never shows emotion.
"Jen," he said suprisingly calmly, walking over to me.
"Your brothers were just in a terrible accident,"
"Well are they okay?" I asked, frightened for the answer.
There was a long pause before my dad responded.
"Well, Max is okay, but he's in the hospital in critical condition,"
I sat down at the table, across from my mother.
"And Steve?" I asked, feeling my eyes begin to swell.
My mom looked up at him with pleading eyes.
My dad looked at the ground, unwilling to answer me.
    "Dad! What happened to Steve?"
He took a deep breath before saying, "Jen, Steve is dead."
    Tell me what you think!

    CHAPTER 6, PART 2:
I don't mind at all, if it's a little bit out of tuuuuune.
He sang, rocking back and forth for emphasis.
When he finished the song, there was a moment of silence, as if everyone was taking in the beauty of his performance.
And in that moment of silence, he turned to me and kissed me.
It was one of those perfect kisses you always dream about, the soft, slow, tender ones that only happen in movies.
Cheers erupted from the group, and he pulled away from me, reminded that we had an audience.
He looked me, smiling, his green eyes glistening in the moonlight, before standing up to take a bow.
    - - -
Ryan sang a couple more songs, as I and the rest of the group roasted marshmallows.
Eentually, though, the party died down.
Some people went home, but a few of us stayed huddled around the fire talking.
"Want to go for a walk?" Ryan asked me.
"Sure," I said, glad to get away from the group.
He stood up, and reached for my hand, helping me up.
He didn't let go, and led me to the water.
We spent a while walking in silence, hand-in-hand, watching the waves crash against the sand.
    Ryan broke the silence first.
"Did you have fun tonight?" he asked.
"Yeah, it was nice," I responded.
"Oh no, you didn't like it," he said, stopping.
I turned towards him and took his other hand.
"Yes, I did. It was fun! I'm glad I got to meet everyone,"
    "You sure?"
    "Positive,"
"Okay good," he looked up into the sky.
I looked up with him, and stared at the millions of glimmering stars.
"They're beautiful, aren't they?" he said, looking down at me.
I'd never heard a guy say beautiful, that's usually too lame for them, so I just stated blankly at him.
He laughed. Another moment of silence.
We both looked up at the stars again.
"I know by the end of tonight you don't have to look up at the stars. And I know if the love is alright you don't have to look up at the stars," he sang quietly.
I could feel his eyes on me, as I gazed at the glittery sky.
I looked back to him, and he smiled at me before leaning in for another kiss.
And in that moment, I realized how perfect my life was.
Nothing could possibly ruin my mood.
    Nothing...

    CHAPTER 6, PART 1:
When I got to the beach, I could see a group of about 10 or 15 people off in the distance, sitting around a giant fire.
Of course I didn't recognize any of them, except for Ryan.
He saw me as I was making my way over, and stood up and walked towards me.
"Hey! Glad you could make it!" he said cheerfully, a huge smile on his face.
    I nodded, smiling back.
"Don't worry, my friends don't bite," he laughed.
He put his arm around my shoulders, guiding me back to the group.
"This here, is my friend Jenna. Can everyone say hello?"
"Hi Jenna," everyone said in unison.
    I laughed at the cheesiness.
"See?" he said, punching me in the shoulder playfully, as we sat down on a log.
I felt really awkward, not knowing anyone.
I think Ryan sensed that I felt out of place, because he said, "How about some music to lighten up the mood?"
There was a chorus of yeahs, so he turned around to pick up his guitar, which was laying on the ground behind us.
He brushed the sand off of it, put the strap around his neck, and pulled a red guitar pick that was tucked under the strings.
Playing a chord, he said, "Here's a little number I like to call Out Of Tune,"
    A couple people cheered.
He played another chord, and said, "But it's not mine, I give credit to a young man named David Choi,"
He cleared his throat, and it was suddenly silent.
I don't mind at all, if it's a little bit out of tune.
He sang, and people began to clap.
Yeah, I don't mind at all if it's a little bit out of tune.
I joined in with the clapping and I started to feel a little better, as I watched him get into the song.
It's a not so picture perfect day, you don't match, and your hair's all over the place.
He turned to me, winked, and looked back around to the rest of the group.
I zoned out for the rest of the song, and just watched him.
His voice was absolutely beautiful, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down as he sang.
It amazed me as I watched him, every move he made - strumming the guitar, tapping his foot, and the way threw his head back on the high notes - was absolutely breathtaking.
You could tell just how much the music meant to him.
Ugh, I'm getting too into this story, the chapters are beginning to be too long! :(
    Stay tuned for part 2!

    CHAPTER 5:
I was in the shower when I heard my phone ring from another room.
I just shrugged. Whoever it was, could wait.
    Well, unless it was...
I jumped out of the shower, grabbed my towel and ran across the hall to my room, passing Max on the way.
    "Ewwww!" he squealed. "Jenna's naked!"
"Oh shut up, I'm wearing a towel," I yelled back to him, closing the door to my room.
My phone was ringing like crazy.
I leaped across my queen-sized bed and reached for my phone which was plugged into the wall next to it.
Of course, as soon as I grabbed it, the ringing stopped.
I slouched onto my bed, accepting defeat.
I sighed, and got up to change into my outfit for the evening: teal shorts with a gray crop-top.
I put on a bit of mascara and pulled my long brown hair into a fishtail braid.
Sitting back down on my bed, I picked up my phone to call whoever had called me back.
But when I picked up my phone, I noticed I already had a text from a number matching the one who called me earlier.
Hey it's Ry i called u but u didnt pick up. everyones meeting up at the beach at 830, u still coming?
I texted him back to say that yes, I was still coming, and I'd see him there.
sweet! get ready for a good time:)
    I smiled, excited for tonight.
I was actually making friends faster than Steven, who - with his brown hair and striking green eyes - was likely to already have a girlfriend by now.
I walked downstairs to find him in the kitchen, cooking something, and it smelled good.
    "What's cooking good-lookin'?" I joked.
He turned around, raising his eyebrow.
"What's up with you?" he asked.
I guess it wasn't very hard to tell I was in a good mood.
    "I asked first,"
"Mom and Dad went to some company dinner tonight, so it's just you, me and Max. I decided to make Italian food, and then we can all do something, like go see a movie,"
"Oh," I said, disappointed that I'd miss out a chance to hang with my brothers.
"What? Do you got plans or something?"
"Yeah, Ryan invited me to a bonfire with his friends."
    "Ooh, Ryan..." he teased.
    "Stop! We're just friends!"
    "Whatever you say, Jen..."
    I rolled my eyes.
"Alright, alright, Miss Sassy Pants. It was just a joke,"
    "Yeah okay, whatever, Steve,"

    CHAPTER 4:
I woke up at 6:13, two minutes before my alarm went off, like clockwork.
I waited for the annoying buzzing to begin, immediately turned it off as soon as I heard it.
I crawled out of bed, and got ready for yet another lesson.
It had only been a week of my surf lessons, yet I knew the guy pretty well.
His name was Ryan and he's 15, a sophomore like myself. His favorite color was green, to match his eyes. Not only did he surf, but he played soccer, and longboards in his freetime. He can sing and play the guitar, something he taught himself how to do when he was nine. Music helps him cope with his father's death, who died in a shark accident when he was seven. He lives with his mom and his younger brother, Tony, who's Max's age. He has a huge sense of humor, and he always seems to laugh at me when I try to surf.
It's not that I'm bad at it, it's just - okay, I'm bad at it.
    Absolutely terrible.
But the lessons have sort of helped, I'm starting to balance on the board for a record of five seconds now!
After we got out of the water, when we were drying off, he mentioned that he and a few friends were having a bonfire later that night, and was wondering if I wanted to come.
"Yeah, sure it sounds like fun!" I replied.
    "Sweet!"
We grabbed our boards and made our way to the shack to put them away.
I was almost out the door to head home when Ryan yelled, "Wait!"
    "What?" I asked, turning around.
"I, uh, need your number. You know, to text you the details and stuff,"
    "Oh, right," I smiled.
I walked up to the register, took a pen from the counter and wrote my number on his hand.
    "Thanks," he said.
I nodded and walked out the door.
Halfway through my journey home, I realized something: I was happy.
Really genuinely happy. I didn't mind living in California, in fact it was a lot better than Ohio.
As much as I missed my friends back home, I really enjoyed living here.

    CHAPTER 3:
When I arrived at the beach, it was about 6:30 and the sun was starting to rise.
I came across a tiny shack, advertising for surf and scuba lessons.
I walked inside, and headed to the back of the store, which was a wall covered with an array of surfboards.
I had been looking at the boards for no less than ten minutes when a guy about my age with shaggy blonde hair, wearing a gray muscle tee and teal swim trunks came up behind me.
    "You surf?" he asked.
    "Uh, yeah.." I lied.
As much as I love meeting new people, I'm not very good at it.
    "Cool, for how long?"
"Well, I used to..." I lied again, "but I just moved here, so I thought I'd try to pick it up again,"
"Oh, sweeeet," he said. "What can I get for you today?"
I scanned the wall, looking for the board I liked best.
"This board," I said, picking out a hot pink one.
    "You sure?" he asked, smirking.
    "Yeah...why?"
"I don't know, but with your height and weight, you'd be better off with one like this," he responded, picking out a tan one with a lime green stripe across the top, and waves on the bottom.
I looked back at the board I picked out, and tried to figure out the differences.
They looked the same to me. Heck, they all looked the same.
"You'd know that if you used to surf," he said.
"Are you questioning me?" I asked, pretending to be offended.
Of course he was. I couldn't surf.
    He looked shocked.
    "Sorry, it's just..."
"I'm kidding. It's way too early for me to think straight. Of course I'll take that board," I said, putting the pink one back.
I thought that was a smooth enough recovery, would he buy it?
I wasn't sure, because he just chuckled and led me towards the cash register.
Punching a few keys, he said, "That'll be $120,"
"Crap, I don't have enough. Can I pay you part of it now and the rest later?"
    He hesitated before answering.
"Well, I'll give you a deal. We give lessons here on the beach, and I'm the instructor. The lessons are $100 a session, which lasts about a month. I'll help you get back on your feet, and if you can give me $100 by the end of the month, and if you're good enough, I'll let you keep the board. Sound good?"
    "Yeah, sure," I agreed.
It was fine by me. A month with a cutie like that wouldn't be so bad.
    "Alright, then let's go!"
He gave me my surfboard, and went into a little room behind the register.
He came out carrying a red surfboard, and we ran out onto the beach.
"You said you used to surf, right?" he asked me, once I had stripped down to my bikini.
    I nodded.
"Well, get out into the water, show me what you remember!" he said.
Again, I had no idea how to surf, so I just did what I'd seen in movies: I paddled to what seemed like a far enough distance, and waited for an acceptable wave. I stood up when it reached me, ready to ride the wave.
Of course, I just wiped out right away, looking like a total idiot.
I looked back towards the beach to find the guy laughing at me.
When I swam back to shore, he just smiled and said jokingly, "Looks like you haven't surfed in a long time."
    I guess I wasn't fooling anyone.

    CHAPTER 2:
I forgot to mention my name, it's Jenna, I'm 15.
I used to live in a small town in Ohio (you've probably never heard of it) until, like I said before, my dad got a new job and we moved out here to California.
I don't even know what his new job is, I just know that it's better than what he had before.
I guess it's okay, because California's much cooler than Ohio, I'm just upset that I don't get to see my friends anymore.
The friends that I've known my whole life; Michelle & Jackson.
I'll still visit them every now and then, I'm sure, but it won't be the same.
That's the good part, though, starting over.
I can start fresh, nobody here knows me.
    Crap. Nobody here knows me.
That means I'll be the freakish new girl...
I always felt bad for the new kids, it must have sucked coming into a new school where everyone knows each other.
Now I'll know what it's like to be the one left out.
And I'm not looking forward to that.
But it's only June, I have all of July & August to make new friends.
    That should be fun, right?
    - - -
I woke up the next morning at 6:00, well before everyone else in my family.
It was 9:00 back home, and whenever we went on vacations I always took the longest to adjust to different time zones.
Groaning, I hopped out of bed.
I figured I might as well make something of this morning.
My room was a mess, with plenty of cardboard boxes strewn about the room, labeled with things like clothes, books, and Jenna's junk.
I dug through one of the boxes labeled clothes and found my swim suit, a bikini with a hot pink top and black bottoms.
I took an old drawstring bag out of one of the boxes and filled it with a towel, money, sunglasses, and a change of clothes.
I walked through the quiet house, out the big door, along the empty street and headed towards the beach.

    CHAPTER 1:
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
Breathing out, I twisted the door knob and pushed it open.
This was it, this was my new home.
I opened my eyes, and felt my jaw drop.
    It was huge.
My parents had kept it a surprise, they wanted to "add to the experience".
And it really was a surprise, I had no idea we could afford such a big house.
Back home in Ohio, my parents were always talking about how tight money was, until my dad got a new job.
Things were starting to look up; things were starting to get better.
Until my mom broke the news to me: as soon as school got out, we were moving.
Moving away from all of my friends that I'd known since I was born.
Which reminded me, I had been lashing out towards my parents for forcing us to move, and standing there with my jaw open made it look like I was happy with the new house, so I clenched my jaw shut.
Don't get me wrong, I really was happy.
The house was ginormous, with the beach just a mile or two away, and a pool in the back yard.
It was wide open, obviously since nothing was in it yet, but even once we filled it with our stuff it would still have plenty of space.
There were two sets of stairs that met together in the middle. A large chandelier hung above our heads, and other than that, the house was completely empty.
"Well?" asked my mom, stepping forwards, opening her arms out wide.
She turned to me & my siblings: Max, age 6 and Caroline, age 8.
    "How do you like it?"
"It's awesome!" yelled Max, running up the long staircase.
Of course Max loved it, he was too young to care that we just moved 2,500 miles away from our old home.
Caroline smiled and said "Yeah, it's pretty cool!" chasing after Max.
My mom glanced at me, begging for an answer.
I just shrugged, and walked back outside to help my older brother Steven, 17, and my dad get stuff out of the car.
