NOTIFYING MY LOYAL (& NOT SO LOYAL) READERS:
I'm all for writing for just one reader & I'm definitely up for continuing a story just because it made one person smile. Problem is, I just uploaded 2 new parts to my story (and admittedly I took like two months off so it's completely understandable that y'all quit on me) and not a single person favorited it or commented on it. So I'm afraid I'm quitting on Brad and Erin. Y'all can just ask me what happens & I'll post you a comment (if enough people do, I'll just finish it) but for now I'm going to start another story(: I think I need to attract a new audience since I seem to have lost the old one<3 But thanks for all your great feedback on the Kiss Me Goodbye. I had a pretty good ending but I'm going to steal it for my next one(: Merci beaucoup!

"What do you call this?" I asked Brad, pointing to a picture of a triangle separated into a million different pieces.
"I don't know. Really complicated trig?"
I laughed. We were sitting at the only booth in the 711, both of us sipping slushies. It was Saturday morning. The rest of the week had sped by, no new scandals or excitement.
    "Ouch," I giggled. "Brainfreeze."
He grabbed my slushie and took a huge sip.
    "Hey!"
"I had to take advantage of the distraction." he grinned.
"Not cool." I smiled at him and let my pencil roll off the table, he bent down to get it and I took a sip of his slushie.
When he emerged, he looked sheepish. "Had that one coming, I guess."
"Let's get out of here," I told him. "Let's take a walk in the arb or something."
I gathered my books and dumped them into my bag. He took my hand and we crossed the street into the huge, grassy, shaded park that led to the river. "Is your dad home?" he asked me.
"Yeah. He's here for the night and then he's going off with Brandi #2 somewhere."
    "For how long?"
"Not sure. He's saying a week, but I bet it'll be at least two."
He sighed. "Call me if you're ever lonely, okay?"
"I can take care of myself."
"I know, Er, babe. I'm just saying if you ever need a little company, I'm a phone call away."
'Thanks." I replied. "It means a lot. It's just nice knowing that you have someone you could call. Even if you don't need to."
"But especially when you do." he said, sagely.

"I think we've pretty much exhausted the night," Brad was saying as we held the opposite sides of the tablecloth and folded it together.
I smiled mysteriously. "I've still got something to show you," I told him.
"Okay," he kissed my ear and took the tablecloth from me, putting it in the picnic basket.
I put all the dirty silverware in it, clattering. "Whose driving?"
I glanced at the empty wine bottle. "I don't think either of us should."
"So responsible," he smiled. "So where is it?"
"Not too far. Between home and here."
He took this in. "Let's get cracking."
I giggled, taking his hand and leading him through the woods. We walked, talking about nothing and stopping here and there to kiss.
When we finally got to the swampy clearing where I'd found The Car, I stopped him and turned him so he could see what I was looking at. The car's blue paint was peeling off, and its bumper was well submerged in the creek. The windows were all smashed and the damage from its accident was evident. Someone had swerved to avoid a deer and abandoned his smashed car, which was then left there, tossed to the side and worthless, until I'd found it and used it since.
I showed him how to climb into the passenger seat through the back window, and got into the driver's.
The key was still in the ignition. I turned it and music came on, playing softly.
"I came here all the time after we broke up," I explained. "It reminded me of us, but not enough to make it hurt. I could listen to music and drown the world out. There's no trace of civilization right here. And there were days when I just couldn't deal with people."
He nodded. "I used my treehouse," he told me. "Just climbed right up. It felt so good to be on top of the world. Even for an hour or so. Like I was so powerful it didn't matter I was alone."
"It's better to be together," I said. "I'm happier."

I followed Brad's exemplary dive and felt the cool rush of water surround me. When I surfaced, he was swimming towards me, his movements smooth and confident. "Turn around," he told me. "We're going that way."
"This is crazy," I informed him, again.
"So you've said." he flashed me his dazzling smile and flicked some water at me. "Let's go."
I swam beside him, trying to keep up. This was unfamiliar, I realized. My feet no longer scraped the sandy bottom. There were huge, shady trees sloping over the creek here, enclosing it. Specks of white flowers dotted the grassy banks, and the plants seem to lean towards the water.
"It's beautiful," I said, and it really was.
"Really takes your breath away," Brad's voice was gentle. "Makes you think."
"I love this creek," I told him. "It's so peaceful. So easy to listen to your mind."
"Here, it's even easy to listen to your heart."
I felt the urge to tell him exactly what my heart was feeling, to jump on him and make love on the banks, but somehow I knew he wouldn't be interested.
"I love you," I said, and somehow those words summed it up. "That's what my heart is saying."
His expression was touched. "I love you, too," he was close to me now, whispering in my ear.
He dunked under, and re surfaced, shaking the water out of his hair, onto me.
"Hey," I said, pretending to be upset.
    "You're already wet," he replied.
"So are you!" I splashed him, then ducked for cover.
He followed me, spraying water at me with his hands. "Time out!" I shrieked.
"There aren't time outs in a water fight!" he shouted.
I swam away from him underwater, hoping the water was murky enough that he wouldn't be able to see me. When I came up, he looked surprised.
I took the opportunity to splash him again.
"Oh no you didn't," he said playfully.
"Oh yes I did," I flirted.
He caught up to me easily and grabbed me around the waist, kissing me. I was about to go for some tongue but he pulled away. "You're beautiful, Erin. I hope you know that."
"You're kind of obligated to say that."
He laughed. "You're more than beautiful, babe. You're stunning. Inside and out."
    I blushed.
"Come on," he said, taking my hand. "There's more to see!"

Brad kissed the top of my head. "Let's go swimming," he said, his voice excited.
"What?" I asked, my voice incredulous.
    "It'll be fun," he promised.
"It'll be freezing." I told him. "And it's not very deep.
"Wimp." he took off his shirt, revealing his perfect abdomen. Then he stepped out of his shorts and dove in, across the surface, not face down. "It gets deeper a little north from here."
    "No way," I said.
"Wi-imp," he repeated, louder this time, extending the "i".
"Fine." I said. I knew it was childish, but I wasn't a wimp.
He laughed. "Knew that would work."
I rolled my eyes at him and took off my clothes, leaving on my bra and underwear. I strutted down to the water, but when I looked at him, he wasn't watching me. He was looking at a darting orange fish through the water. I widened my eyes in shock. There was a mostly naked girl trying to seduce him right in front of him and he was looking at a fish?
"Look at this, Er. Isn't he cute?"
I didn't reply. Just stood there my hands on my hips.
"Lighten up," he teased. "Jump in, it's not that cold."
My forehead crinkled upwards. I would have to try a different tactic.

I knew the road we were taking by heart. Every tree, every pothole, every shrub of grass. It led to the creek, and the memories I could never forget. It led to the happiest days of my life and the best kiss I'd ever had.
Brad glanced at me, looking for my reaction. His expression was unsure. "I know this is kind of old us, and obviously we don't want to be like that anymore, after what I-"
I shook my head. "Stop. It's perfect."
He accelerated slightly, but I could feel it. As if my senses were sharpened when I was with him. "How so?"
"This is the part of the old us that I want to keep forever," I told him solemnly. "We were beautiful."
His eyes seemed to glow with warmth. "That was what I was thinking, exactly."
When he parked, we took our food and sat on the bridge, dangling our legs.
"What's your biggest fear?" Brad asked me, eating a french fry.
I rolled my eyes. "You already know," I protested.
    "I do," he agreed.
"What's your biggest fear?" I asked him.
"You already know," he mimicked me.
"I do," I imitated his voice an octave deeper than it really was.
He laughed. "Your biggest fear is being left behind. Watching the world plow ahead while you stay back and watch. Your biggest fear is coming home one day and just knowing your dad's not ever coming home again."
"You remembered." I noticed, my throat thick.
"Of course." he squeezed my hand.
"Your biggest fear is running too far ahead. Getting in too deep and having to spend the rest of your life to swim out."
    He nodded, his expression somber.
"I'm not going to let you drown, Brad. I'm going to pull you out, no matter what. And if I can't, I'll jump in with you."
"I'm never going to leave you behind, Er. I'm going to stay right beside you until the day we die. I'm not going to plow ahead, babe. I'm going to hold your hand through everything."
I threw my arms around him and held him close to me, breathing in his perfect scent and praying nothing would ever change again.

    (part 32)
    Brad texted me at 6:30.
"Hey, gorgeous. I'm done with practice if you want to hang out."
I glanced over at Grace, who was passed out on my couch. That's what I get for letting Grace loose on my dad's vodka. I sighed.
I replied, telling him what was going on.
He said he would come by later tonight.
I agreed, figuring that Grace could sleep in my bed.
    I called Grace's mom.
"Hey, Mrs. Kruse," I said, brightly.
"Oh, Erin! Nice to talk to you. What's going on?"
"Grace came over to my house after school today, but she's not feeling too well."
"Oh, dear. I can come get her."
"Don't worry about it," I said quickly. "I've already got her in bed and she's asleep. It might be better to leave her alone for right now."
I could hear her confusion through the phone. "Um, okay."
"She kept complaining she was tired all day. Said she didn't feel too well, and when we got here, she just crashed on the couch. I woke her up to get her in more comfortable clothes, but I don't know if we should do it again."
"It sounds like you've got it pretty much under control," Mrs. Kruse said, gently. "Oh, by the way, Erin, is your dad around? I'd love to talk to him about my tulips. A few months back he said he had a friend..?"
"Oh, right." I said, trying to keep my voice light and chipper. "He's actually not in right now, but I'll let him know you called. I'm sure he'll call you back the second he gets a chance."
"Thank you," Mrs. Kruse's voice was blithe, unsuspecting. "Do you want me to come get Gracie in the morning?"
"I guess we'll see how she feels then," I answered. "I'll leave her a note, but I have to go to school and my dad has work, is it okay if she stays home by herself a few hours if she's not feeling up to school?"
"Sure, honey. Just make sure she knows she can call me. I'm off work all day tomorrow so it's really not a problem."
"Okay, I will. Thanks so much, Mrs. Kruse. Sorry for the inconvenience."
"Oh, like it's your fault," she chuckled. "No, darling, thank you."
"It really isn't any trouble at all."
"You're a nice girl, Erin. I'm glad Grace met you."
I didn't know what to say to that. "Um, thanks."
She laughed. "I'd better get going, but I'll hear from Grace tomorrow?"
"Definitely," I promised, and hung up.
I woke Grace up gently. "Hey, sweetie," I said, my voice low. "Can I get you into some PJs?"
"My mouth's dry," she said, sitting up, only to clutch her head and lie back down.
"I'll get you some water. But first why don't you put these on?" I tossed her a pair of boxers and a T-shirt. "You'll be much more comfortable.
"Thanks, Er," she shut her eyelids halfway and moaned softly.
I went to get her a glass of water. When I returned, she was wearing the PJs and lying on the couch. "You can sleep in my bed." I told her.
    "Mmmm," was her only response.
I tucked her in and started my homework.
