We go to the Korean War memorial next. Mr. Wes leads us to what he thinks is the entrance. He has us stand in a small semicircle around him. He begins to explain the architecture of the memorial to us. “There are nineteen life-size statues and a refection wall. The nineteen men on one side of the refection wall represent South Korea and the other nineteen men reflected in the wall are North Korea. The nineteen men on one side and the refection of the nineteen men on the other side make up the Thirty-Eighth Parallel: the line of latitude that divides North and South Korea.” Mr. Wes explains to us. He points to the different parts of the monument. Once I understand the monument, I am I full awe. I absolutely love this monument now. The creativity and inspiration put into it is amazing. I take a million pictures with Claire’s camera. I want to remember this monument. I walk through with Rae to my left and Claire to her left. As we pass the life-size statues, a take pictures. As we pass the reflection wall, I take pictures. “Whoa!” Claire gasps. “What?” Rae says: startled. “There are things etched in the wall, like soldiers and jeeps and stuff” she points out. “Would you look at that” I say. I take a quick picture. “How many pictures are you going to take?” Rae teases me about my camera obsession. I stick the camera in her face and take the picture like that. “I don’t know, you tell me!” I tease back. She squeaks some then takes out her camera. She pushes the lens as close as she can get it to my lips then takes the picture. I stick out my tongue and lick her camera. In the midst of our picture brawl, Claire tries to break us up so we don’t make a scene. “Guys! Come on!” she gives us a look of disapproval. I look at Rachel and Rachel looks at me. We have the same idea. We turn to Claire and take a picture of her too. We laugh, and then Claire laughs. In a matter of seconds we are laughing so hard that we are making a scene.

“Alright everyone, back on the busses!” Mr. Moore shouts across the lawn. Eventually everyone migrates to the bus. As I hop on the bus, I smile because I realize that I’m still wearing Sam’s hat. “Oh the cleverness of me” I think to myself. I sit next to mike and the bus starts to move shortly after. The next stop is the Lincoln Memorial. We get off the bus in front of the monument. Mr. Wes gives us some history on the statue inside and the architecture. He says, “If you look on the left side of Lincoln’s head, there’s a profile of the sculptor in the statues hair. There are two places that it could be but no one is sure.” I keep that in the back of my head as we climb the steps. Mike and I count every step on the way up. Eventually we grow bored and he starts to run, so I chase after him. We are laughing the whole time. He won but that’s only because he had a head start. We reach the top and he leaves to find his friends. I catch up with Rachel and Claire. “Oh, I get it, you and Mike huh?” Rae teases. “Nah, you know we’re only friends. I don’t even like him” I say back to Rae. “Hey! Just remember, he’s all mine” Claire cautions me. I give her a big smile like I understand the boundaries. Anyway, Mike and I are just friends. Rae, Claire and I walk throughout; taking pictures of just about everything we see. We even try to spot the profile of the sculptor in Lincoln’s hair. I found one potential spot with Claire but Rae also found another spot on his head. We laughed about it but then we went back down the steps to meet up with the rest of the guys. We walk across the street to the Vietnam War memorial. Again, Mr. Wes fills us in on the history of the war and the monument. He tells us about the girl that designed the shape of the monument for a contest. Mr. Wes also told us about the symbolism behind the shape of the memorial. How the wall are small at the beginning and at the end and how the walls are larger in the middle. We walked through silently and respectfully. We took the occasional picture as we walked but here was nothing extremely exciting to see. We went to the Korean War memorial next.

The rest of the guys are waiting for us. Sometimes it’s not a good thing being in a group of all guys. They always think that girls take too much time in the bathroom but the truth is that guys go to the bathroom like super humans. I mean, one would think it takes a few minutes to be completely done in the bathroom, but guys have defied that. They are in and out in a minute flat! When everyone is settled in their seat on the bus, I take out Claire’s camera and take pictures of everyone. First I take I picture of Rae and Claire together. Then I take a picture of Jack and Isaac. Last, I take a picture of Mike and I. that’s a keeper. We look out the windows as we pass some of the monuments. We circle the Hiroshima memorial. We go around it a few times to see the 3D effect it has, or whatever. This monument is stunning. I didn’t realize how immense it actual is. As we circle the monument, Mike leans on my lap to get a better shot. I am taken back a little when he does it and I am shocked. He usually wouldn’t do something like that. Claire and Rae look at us. I look back at them with a puzzled expression, but truth be told I didn’t mind him doing that. I thought it was cute. I am still puzzled about why he would do that. The buses finally stop and we get off for a minute. As we unload the buses, I spot Sam again. He is on bus three. As he gets off the bus, we catch up with him again. We also see Ellie coming off bus one. All five of us walk around the monument for a little. We take it all in. Ellie takes the fedora off of Sam’s head and she wars it. Though it doesn’t match her outfit very well, she looks cute. We ask Sam to take a picture of the four of us, for a keepsake. We stand in front of the monument as Sam fusses with the camera for a while before he finally figures it out. Then, he takes the picture: that s another keeper. We walk around for a little; we sit on the edge of the monument after. We sit and people watch. We see everyone from our class. There’s always the group of socially awkward girls that have been rejected by just about everyone. Also, there are the awkward guys that associate with the socially challenged girls. There is the group of jock guys that always hangs out with the jock girls. They are the most popular kids in the grade. Then there’s the group a bratty girls that are associated with the jock girls. Surprisingly, I had my chance to be one of the popular girls.

Another bus comes to pick everyone up. The only thing is that our bus isn’t here. We stand around for a little, but then decide to climb onto the other tram with the rest of the grade. Jack, Ray, Claire, Isaac, Mike and I get the last row in the tram. There is extra space in case there was a wheel chair on the bus. Mr. Wes and Charlie find another seat to sit in. I am squished between Claire and Isaac. Ray is pleasantly sitting next to Jack and Mike is on the end. Right before we start to move, Mr. Moore hops onto the bus. He sits down in the corner facing us. He sits Indian style and looks at us as if not a thing was weird. He smiles and starts a casual conversation. “So,” he begins, “how is everyone’s trip so far? Are you all having fun?” “Well hi there Mr. Moore” Rachel says and smiles. “Hi” he smiles back. “I’m having a great trip so far” I say, trying to start a conversation but it dies quickly when Mr. Moore responds with “Okay”. Everyone tries to avoid conversation as we wait to get off the bus. Finally, the bus stops and we get off as fast as humanly possible. Our group gathers by a tree. “Rug Rats do your thing” Mr. Wes says. “Phil” “Tommy” “Chucky” “Dill” “Angelica” “Lil” “And Susie” “Great! Let’s go then” Mr. Wes says. We walk to the buses at the front of the building. This time we walk through the building to lets people go to the bathroom. I walk in with Claire and Ray. We do what we need to do and walk out. The line for the bathroom grew since we walked into the bathroom itself.

Before we know it we are back at the patio where we started. We get off the tram and thank the bus driver for bringing us around. We gather together on the patio to talk. “Alright, everyone is here. We are going to walk to the tomb of the unknown soldiers. We are going to stay for the changing of the guard. Then we are going to get back on the tram for one last trip around the grounds. We are going to the hotel after that to get ready for the dance tonight” Mr. Wes briefs us on what our agenda is. We start to walk to the tomb of the unknown soldiers. The walk was longer than I anticipated. When we get there, we take the first row of seats for the changing of the guard. I start to watch the guard march back and forth on the strip of blue carpet. He takes exactly 21 steps to get from side to the other. He takes no more, no less. I am captivated by the neatness and preciseness of every step, every turn, and every body movement: so bold and deliberate. I love the way his uniform is perfect in every way. I study everything about this guard. I am so fascinated with the military and how perfect they are. I love the uniforms’ sharpness. I love the uniformity of every person. Most people don’t understand my awe for the military and the people who serve our country. Ray notices that that I am standing still, in this time and place, I am in a deeper thought than I can ever think consciously. She shakes my arm to revive me from my trance. “Hey cutie, come sit with us” she pulls me over to where she and Claire are sitting. I sit and talk to my friends. After a while people start to crowd the seats around us. Then, all of the seats were filling up and people start standing on either side of the seats. I am so thankful that we were early. An announcer says, “Can everyone rise and stay standing for the entire Changing of the Guards!” everyone gets on their feet and watches as the ceremony starts. I watch as two extra guards come to the blue strip of carpet. I don’t know the exact movements that did, but everything is perfectly precise. Eventually, there was a different guard marching on the blue carpet. I study the new guard as he marches up and down the strip. His gait is the same as the man before.

I look at Claire and Rachel. They are both in conversation with the other two boys. Who knows what they are talking about but there is no way to distract either one of them. I look back at Charlie. I feel really bad that he is all alone. I can’t help it though, he can talk to us if he wants to but he chooses not to. He’s shy that way. He’s politely looking out the window and taking the occasional picture. I look back at Mike and he is practically studying what is out the window as we drive by. His eyes are so focused and his expression: so serious. I can’t help but study him the way he is studying the scene around us. I can’t put my finger on it but he is perfect for some reason. My eyes transitions to his eyes and I can’t help but get lost once more in the swirls of chocolate, the deep browns that take my breath away. He turns his head without a word; he studies me the way I am him. He watches my every move. His lips shape into a small smile the perfects his gaze. I am forever lost in his eyes. We are lost in this perpetual state. He stares into my eyes and I look back into his. I don’t know who started it but I don’t want it to ever stop. We could have sat there for hours: eyes locked, bodies positioned perfectly. Neither of us dares to move. Every minute of time paused for us. We stopped time, for the first time in my life the earth stopped spinning and the world around us didn’t matter. In reality we were in that state for a few seconds but it felt like a life time of bliss. Of course Mike broke the moment: “Why are you staring at me?” I snap back into reality but I will never forget that moment. “I wasn’t staring at you, you were staring at me first.” I say. “What?” he has no idea that we were locked in that perpetual state of bliss the way I experienced. He can’t ever know what I just experienced. Then again, I don’t know what was going through his mind at that moment. “Never mind” I smile and look away.

Our car finally stops at the grave of John F. Kennedy. We walk up the stairs quietly to the eternal flame. There was another group of kids from another school around the flame. I know that they are all from the same school because they are all wearing matching red shirts. The words are white on the back and they have the name of the school and their school mascot. I would hate to have to wear matching school shirts. Mr. Moore is too cool to make us wear school shirts like that. I like having a young principle for that reason. After everyone has taken their share of pictures, we back away and go to our car. the bus driver is waiting for us at the bottom of the hill so we have to walk down, past JFK’s brothers’ headstones. I take pictures with Claire’s camera and she also takes some pictures of the mansion at the top of the hill. Mr. Wes told us the history of that mansion as we walk down to the bus. We walk onto our bus. We sit down in the same seats but Claire has the window seat, Rachel is in the middle and I’m on the outside. Mike sits down in the seat across the aisle from me and jack sits behind us, and Isaac sits in the seat in front of us. It’s like they devised a plan to surround us! “What is this?” I ask. “Are you going to kidnap us or what?” I ask Mike. His eyes are so deep and beautiful. I can see why Claire fell for him. He is incredible. He crosses his arms and I can see his muscles ripple. There is nothing flawed about him. I though Jack didn’t have a flaw: neither does Mike. I just melt when he crosses his arms. I get lost in his eyes and I jump when he answers me, “Maybe” he says and smiles at me. That devious smile is making melt even more. “I might just let you” I say in a trance. I stare into his eyes for another second before I realize what I said. I snap out of it and my eyes get really wide from embarrassment and I cover my mouth. I gasp and say: “Did I just say that?” I am so dead. I start to panic. I put my head down with my hands still covering my mouth. I don’t dare look up to see Mike. I can’t look at him right now. “Yeah, you did just say that” he answers my question. He laughs a little and then says, “Don’t worry about it you’re cute…” he stops, “that was cute…” he corrects himself. He laughs a little because he just made the same mistake I did. “Well I guess we’re even. We both tripped up with words.” I take my hand away from my mouth. I look up at him and smile. He is such a great person. We look at each other for a second before I look away. I know I shouldn’t feel this way about him but I can’t help it. He is so cute and sweet. I can’t help but smile when I talk to him.

“Yeah sure!” she agrees and hands me the camera. Her camera was a little old but it still worked like a new one. The picture I took looked like it was taken with a better camera than I was using. “That’s a good one.” She complements my picture. “Do you wanna hear something funny?” I ask. “Yeah, sure” I lower my voice and say: “I forgot to bring a camera on the trip!” I giggle a little more. “What?” she laughs at me. “That's great. You didn’t think of bringing it?” “No” I say sheepishly. “It’s a good thing a brought a second one.” She smiles. “You did!” I say with excitement. “Yeah. I didn’t know which one I wanted to bring so I brought both.” I give her a big smile. “We’ll have to share this one for now because my other one is in my suitcase. But you can borrow that one for the rest of the trip.” “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” I give her a great hug and a big smile. Thank goodness for Claire. I would be so lost without her. She smiles back at me. We share the camera while we are here. All of the sights here are beautiful. I take a great picture of the rolling hills with the soldiers’ headstones on them. The shot is perfect; it is so serene and calm. The three of us took a million pictures each. Not only are our surroundings beautiful, the weather is absolutely amazing. It is so warm and the sun is shining. There is a slight breeze that keeps us from getting too hot. This is the type of weather that someone could only dream of. The car brings us on a tour of the grounds. We drive past all the major monuments and memorials. We see the older part of the cemetery and then we see the younger part of the property. Our bus driver tells us the history of the grounds and how it became a cemetery. While we drive, we see a funeral procession drive by. It was a soldier’s funeral because they had a flag on the casket. We drive past just about everything before we actually stop.

The next stop is Arlington National Cemetery. When we get off our buses, we walk around the large building in the front to the road in the back. We stand around on the patio and wait for the trams to pick us up. We are unbelievably early. It’s a good thing that we are early because we will have extra time to get ready for the dance tonight. The trams eventually come and we pile on. Our group is the last ones to get on. We notice that there isn’t enough room to fit our group so we get onto a separate one. I can’t believe we get the whole car to ourselves. This doesn’t feel real. Our car is more like a short bus, unlike the one that the rest of our grade is on. There are windows but they are all open and it makes the bus look bigger. The seats are benches with a middle aisle. I sit down by the window and Claire and Rachel sit next to me. Jack chooses the bench right behind us for him and his friends. I turn around and say, “Is the tram not big enough for you three?” I am usually really sassy with Jack. He gives me a sassy smile back. The car starts to move and we pull away from the patio. We drive up a large hill and through winding roads. There are headstones to the left and right of us. After a while, our car isn’t following the car that is carrying everyone else in it. We are going a totally separate way. We turn down the road where all of the soldiers are buried. Every row neatly aligned to the next. They lived a life of order and now after death, they carry on that legacy of perfect, orderly lines. I go to grab my camera out of my bag because there was a perfect picture I wanted to take. But when I reach into my bag, there’s no camera in there. I search around for a while before it comes to me. I realize that I didn’t pack a camera! I didn’t think to pack a camera! I laugh at myself a little before I start to wonder what I will do. I think I can buy one where ever we are but then I could ask someone to borrow one. “Claire? Do you have a camera I can borrow? I have a great picture I want to take.”

The thing about Jack, is that he says he can’t dance and but he’s not that bad. I made him come to semi formal last year. He was so cute. He wore the cutest pair of suspenders and a little red bow tie. I just wanted to give him a great bid hug. After we all vow to dance, we talk for a while, about anything but boys because somehow all of the guys on the bus decide to group together and we are in the middle of all of them. Instead we talk about clothes. I start by talking about the dresses we are wearing tonight. I haven’t seen Rachel or Claire’s dresses yet, so it will be a surprise to me. The same thing with them: neither of us has seen any of our dresses. Then, we talk about our outfits for the upcoming days. I have every outfit planned out and I even have a backup outfit incase one doesn’t look nice on me. Then, all of the sudden, there is a very quiet singing coming from behind Ray and Claire. It’s Isaac and Jack. They’re singing along to Jack’s iPod. I can’t hear what song they are singing but it sound familiar. I ask Rachel: “What are they singing?” She hushes me then listens really closely to them. “The Spice Girls?” she says. “What?” Claire says stifling a giggle. “Are they really?” “Yeah…yeah they are!” Rachel says a little louder. “That’s hilarious!” I sit next to Jack in math class and he is always singing. I keep telling him he is a terrible singer but he never listens to me. He says that he knows he can’t sing but he likes to. I always just laugh and disregard the singing until it stops. I start to stare at Jack from across the aisle and he looks back at me. He notices that I was staring and he starts to sing a bit loud. He and Isaac start to sing really loud. They are belting the Spice Girls as loud as they can. Everyone starts to look at them but they keep singing. I would love to just be able to do that with no shame. I’m really shy so I could never do anything daring like that. Jack starts to smile and he loses his train of though and stops singing and he starts to laugh really hard. Everyone around them starts to laugh, especially Claire, Rachel and I. jack looks at me for some sort of approval. He looks at me to make sure I am laughing. I don’t know what he is thinking but if he just does that to impress girls, I guess it works. He is so cute. I look out the window and see a bridge, but it’s not a usual bridge: it’s not over water, it’s over traffic. It is absolutely stunning. It is totally made out of concrete. There are these huge pillars on all four corners of the bridge and the carvings in them are beautiful. There is also a sign on the right side of the bridge, it reads “Welcome to Washington D.C.” and then it has writing under it but I don’t have enough time to read it. “Guys!” no one responds, “Guys! Look we’re here!” I point out the window to the sign. “We’re finally here!” Jack yells with excitement. “Calm down Jack. We still have to get to Arlington” Mr. Wes says. Jack looks at our chaperone then shuts up. We make eye contact and I smile. I feel bad that I it was my fault that he was yelled at.

“Me too” she says and breaks the huddle. We all sit back and look at the people around us. Jack and Mike are gaining complements from their glasses; Sam is frolicking through the groups of people. He is extremely awkward. Someone needs to teach him how to act around people, let alone girls. He has a habit of creeping out everyone he talks to. After a few minutes of sitting on the bench, I notice that there are more people sitting on the bench. At first there were four people sitting and now there is seven: Claire, Rachel, Ellie, Emma, Adrian, Ginger and myself. Sam tries to sit down with us but there is no more room on the bench. If anyone else sits down, the whole bench will break into a million pieces. The chaperones finally come out of the building. They gather everyone into a smaller group on the patio. We get the whole lecture about representing our school in a new city. We need to behave and act presentable. We all nod even though no one cares. Mr. Moore ends his speech with: “Let’s have a great trip everyone.” We sit around for a few more minutes until our buses pull up to the patio. We all pile onto the buses. This time Mike takes the window seat and I sit on the aisle. Mr. Wes says: “Rug Rats roll call!” he laughs a little. “Chucky,” Charlie says Mike says: “Phil!” “Lil!” I say. “Angelica!” Rachel says. “Susie!” “Tommy!” Jack says. Isaac says: “Dill!” “Stu. Alright, we have everyone” Mr. Wes says. Mike could tell I was dying to talk with Rachel and Claire so he let me sit in his seat. he is so sweet. We talk about all sorts of things. First we talk about how cute Ellie would be with Ben. I really don’t like Ben but if he makes Ellie happy than I don’t care. Then we talk about tonight. We are so excited for the dance. I have decided that I am going to slow dance. I will not end the night if I don’t slow dance with at least one guy. Rachel, Claire and I vow to slow dance with at least one person. I hope I get to dance with Jack.

“Sam?” Ellie says. “Yes?” he responds as if nothing is wrong. She looks at him for a while with a face of “are you kidding me?” she says, “Sam… girls only…” and she just stares at him until he gets it. “Oh…Oh! I get it! I’ll go…over there.” He says as if it was his idea all along. She gets up and skips to another group of girls. “So what did you need to tell us?” Rachel asks as we are huddled in a circle. “Well, don’t give me a bunch of garbage for this, but I really like…” she stops. “Oh forget it, it’s a stupid crush.” She tries to change the subject. “No, no we want to hear it,” Claire reassures her. “Go on” she says. “Okay, it Ben” she says disappointed with herself. “Which Ben?” I ask because there are two Bens in our grade. There is the Ben that is part of the popular group and then there’s the dorky, weird Ben. “Its Ben Herbert” she says with the same disappointed tone of voice. Ben Herbert is the dorky Ben. “Really?” I try to say without making it sound like I’m about to laugh. Ben isn’t even good looking. He is weird and his hair looks like straw. But I guess I can’t judge because I’ve had a crush on the same guy for over a year now. “Yeah. Please don’t make fun of me for it. I know he’s not the best guy I could choose but I really like him. I think I’m going to ask him to dance tonight.” She says and looks at me specifically. “No, don’t worry about it; I’ll make sure Cat won’t say anything bad. I think it’s really cute that you have a crush on him.” Rachel says then looks at me sternly. “I hope he likes you too. You would be a really cute couple.” Rachel smiles at Ellie.

“Oh really?” he asks. Then he takes then off and puts then on me. I giggle a little as he puts them on me. “I don’t see it” “Well let me look in a mirror first, before you make any judgments.” I walk over to the mirror by the wall of glasses. I look for a while then turn back around. “I think I look better.” I tease. Jack thinks he’s the best looking thing in the world, so to be told that I look better than him, he gets sassy. “Nope, I definitely look better” he says. Even though he does look better, because he always looks good in anything, I flirt with him anyway. “Nah” I just look at him. I let out a little laugh. I take the glasses off my head and put them on his head. I smile and say: “I still look better” all he does is smile. I feel Rachel pull my arm. She just wants to get away from. She really doesn’t like when I flirt with Jack because she’s had dibs on him since sixth grade. We walk out the front door again. As we walk down the stairs, we see people following our lead and walking out onto the patio. There are little green benches and matching picnic tables. I sit down with Claire, Rachel and Sam on the first bench we see. As we sit and watch people flood the patio; more and mare people come and sit down on our tiny bench. People sit then they get up and it’s a cycle but the four of us stay on the bench the whole time. Eventually our friend Ellie Parker sits down on the bench with us. She was friends with us last year, but she recently found a new crowd of people to hang out with. “Hey guys” she says. She is tiny: thin and short. She has naturally brown hair but she dyed her hair blonde and then she put bleach blonde highlights in on top of that. Her eyes are beautifully blonde. They are just like gold. Although she is always happy, she is always wearing black. Recently she has added neon colors into her wardrobe. Personally, I wouldn’t dress like that but it looks good on her. Despite her bark wardrobe, she is actually a very bubbly person. “Hey Ellie” Claire says and we all say hi after her. “What’s going on with you, girly?” “Nothing much, but can I tell you guys something?” she says in a hushed tone. We lean in to hear what she needs to say. Sam leans in too.

“Fancy meeting you here” Sam says to me and makes a weird face. He has a habit of making weird faces at people. He is eating a pack lunch from the same lunchbox that he had in the fifth grade. Claire is eating a fruit salad very carefully. She is only eating the berries and the kiwis and nothing else. Rachel is enjoying her food. “Whatcha eatin’?” I ask Rachel. “A gyro. You know, like Greek food” she looks at me as if I had three heads. “I know what it is. I was just trying to make conversation.” I smile. I start to take the peperoni off my piece of pizza. I place them off to the side and wipe the excess grease off my food. I begin to eat. The pizza is actually quite good. When we are finished, we go to the front of the building to look for something to do with my friends. We walk into the bathroom but there are too many girls in there so we walk out. We decide to go back on the bus. We walk all the way around to the back of the building to where the buses are parked. We try to get on the bus but there is no one there to actually let us board. That was a good waste of time though. We walk back around and we go back into the building. A whole group of guys are standing by the door way. It is almost impossible to get to the food court again. In the midst of the guys, I see Jack and I stop moving. I want to talk to him; I want to be close to him. I drag Rachel over to where he is standing with a few of his friends. When we reach him, he is already talking to Angie and Eva. We join the conversation anyway. They are talking about how “cool” Jack looks in his new gasses. He and Mike bought matching aviators. Little do they know that I have the same glasses in my backpack on our bus. My sister told me that aviators would be the big thing so she gave me her pair; she said I could have them. She just wanted to get rid of them because they are her ex’s. I don’t mind. “Sure Jack, you amazing.” I say sarcastically. He and I are always sarcastic with each other. It’s just playful sarcasm though. “Why thank you” he smiles “I bet they look better on me then they’ll ever look on you” I flirt.

The next time we stop is for lunch. We stop at the Maryland House. While getting off the bus I loose Claire and Rachel. Since I got off after them, they must be inside. I stand around for a while then I decide to go in the building. I assume I’ll find them inside. Everyone goes in through the back doors because our buses are parked back here. I walk up the stairs to the door and I go in. the place looks a lot smaller from the outside. I look around at all my options first. There is a Nathans, a smoothie place that isn’t open yet, there is even a place for Chinese food. I see a pizza place; I think I’ll stick with the basics. I get on the line when it’s not too long. I a green tray, I wonder how many people have used it before me. “Can I have a plain slice?” I ask the nice old lady in a hairnet. She smiles politely and says: “Sorry Hun, we don’t have any left. Do you want a peperoni slice instead?” I think about it for a while because I don’t like peperoni pizza. “Okay” I say. I take the peperoni pizza because the line behind me is really long and I don’t want to keep anyone waiting. I’ll have the peperoni off of the pizza. I bet Rachel will want to eat the peperoni. I move down the line to the drink refrigerator. I grab a Peace Tea because that’s the only drink I recognize. There are also desserts in the fridge. I think about getting a cupcake then decide not to because I am already eating a piece of pizza. I pay for the food and get off the line. Now I have to find my friends. I stand dumbfounded for a while, looking around. I see jack and his friends by the window so I think Rachel would be close by. I am wrong. “Cat!” Rachel calls my name. I turn around and see Rachel sitting with Claire and our best guy friend Sam. He is short and dorky. We make it clear that he is just a friend, so we don’t have to worry about him crushing on us. He has a bowl cut and we keep telling him to style it a different way. His hair is just a boring brown but he always wears a fedora to match his outfit. He also wears thin glasses that make his face look longer than it is. His eyes aren’t a bad color; however, they aren’t pretty. They are just brown. I sit down next to Claire. “Hey guys” I say.
