    Lend Me Your Heart
    Sixty-Six
“Lend me your hand and we'll conquer them all, but lend me your heart and I'll just let you fall. Lend me your eyes I can change what you see, but your soul you must keep, totally free.”
Those were my favorite lyrics in the entire universe after I realized how much they resembled my relationship with Zach.
It just made dancing along to them that much more enjoyable, and this time I wasn’t as nervous.
It was the last of my performances that Zach would ever see, so even though I knew it’d have to be perfect, I was confident after practicing it so much.
    And it was perfect.
When it was finished and all the roses had been thrown, Alexa came up on stage and, using her headpiece, made an announcement to the entire audience.
“Please congratulate Layne Davis for being the only junior in Dance Workshop to ever complete three solo dances in one year. You’re performances were amazing, Layne, and I look forward to working with you next year,” she said to everyone while keeping her eyes locked with mine.
A big smile appeared across my lips as I gracefully walked towards her with open arms and engulfed her in a giant hug.
When the crowd was finished with their applause, I walked offstage with Alexa, ignoring the glares shot at me from the other senior dancers.
I understood why they were angry with me.
I mean, I wouldn’t want a sophomore to steal my limelight, but I guess since I was the thief in this situation it was okay to flaunt what I had.
“Well,” I heard a voice say from behind me.
I spun around to see Zach and my smile immediately got three times bigger…if that was even possible.
“Damn,” he finished, his eyes wide. “It was perfect.”
“I know,” I shrugged, walking past him to get my bag.
“When did you get so full of yourself?” he asked, wrapping his arms around my waist.
“When I decided my dance had to be absolutely flawless if I wanted to impress you,” I said, making him blush a little.
“You’re always flawless to me,” he said softly, kissing my cheek as we walked out towards campus. “Let me carry your bag.”
Ever since Zach and I had gotten back together, he’d been extremely nice to me; offering to do things for me, taking me out, spending lots of time with me, etc.
His excuse was that he wanted to be the best boyfriend ever after hurting me so badly, so I obviously didn’t argue.
I handed him my bag and thanked him as we silently walked towards cottage.
    The tension was unbearable.
It was our last day together before graduation and we weren’t even talking.
I knew it was because we were both feeling bittersweet, but I didn’t like it.
“Zach,” I said suddenly, my voice breaking the unbearable silence.
    “Yeah?”
“Just…” I started, taking a deep breath. “Just f*cking kiss me already.”
So, in the middle of campus, surrounded by parents that had flown from all over for graduation, Zach dropped my bag and put his hands on either side of my face and kissed me like it was the last day on earth.
Then, someone clearing his or her throat interrupted us.
I turned my head easily away from Zach, expecting to see one of my friends, but then was shocked to fond Mike, my mom, and my dad standing there with a bouquet of flowers.
“What the f*ck are you doing with this d*ck again?” my brother sneered, making my mom frown.
“I trusted you with my daughter,” my dad spat, pointing at Zach.
“Oh, Layne,” my mother whispered in disappointment.
“Calm down!” I said to all of them. “Please. He apologized to me.”
“So, what for?” Mike asked Zach, “So you could get some before you graduate? She’s my little sister, man. What the f*ck?”
Zach looked down, pain clear across his face, making my heart break into a million tiny pieces.
“Please!” I shouted at my family, protectively throwing my arms around Zach. “All of you. This was my choice.”
“What the hell kind of a choice is that?” my dad spat in my face. “Date a boy who used you and broke your heart after he left you and then suddenly get back together with him after he graduated? You know better than that, Layne. Jesus.”
“See?” Zach muttered. “This is exactly what I didn’t want.”
“And it’s all about what you want, isn’t it?” Mike growled in Zach’s face.
“I broke up with her because I didn’t want to hurt her before I left. It was going to happen either way,” Zach said.
“But now it’s going to happen twice,” my mom whispered, making Zach cringe.
“And now you’re all making it a hundred times worse!” I cried, a tear falling down my cheek.
“Oh and, thanks for the flowers,” I snapped, grabbing the flowers out of my mothers’ hands. “It’s been a pleasure.”
With that, I turned on my heel and sprinted towards my room, tears falling down my cheeks.
Why couldn’t everybody just get along?
This was our last day together, for crying out loud!
I swear, they all wanted to make my life miserable.
“Ugh!” I groaned, throwing the flowers to the ground when I entered my room.
I immediately stripped off my clothes and shoes, leaving me in my white, lace bra and underwear when my door immediately burst open.
Without even flinching, I looked up to see Zach, wearing a very hurt expression.
“Go away,” I muttered, walking towards the door and trying to close it, but Zach pushed it open more.
“It deserved it,” he said looking me in the eye. “Your family had every right to be angry with me and we both know why. Layne, sweet heart, I love you but we both know you would’ve never said those things to my face, so thank God you have an amazing family to tell me off like that. I deserved it.”
I blinked back my tears in surprise and smiled.
“God,” I whispered, pulling him inside my room by his shirt. “You sure have a way with words.”
Thank you guys sooo much for al of your support lately. I <3 you!

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Sixty-Five
“Aren’t dancers supposed to be like…good at dancing?” Jake said, forcefully grinding up on me when a fast song came on, much like the majority of teenagers here.
Jake had already given me a hard time about taking pictures; now he was going to give me a hard time about dancing?
I rolled my eyes and shook my head.
“Not like this,” I muttered uncomfortably as his hands slid from my waist to my thighs.
“Fine. Wanna hook up?” he asked, turning me around so we were facing each other.
He puckered his lips and leaned in, only to be humiliated when I turned my face so he kissed my cheek instead of my mouth.
“No,” I said, pushing him away from me. “I’m going to get some punch. Want some?”
“Only if it’s spiked,” he sighed, walking away from me on the dance floor.
I slowly walked towards the punch bowl and got myself a cup.
“Better make sure it’s not spiked,” I heard a familiar voice say from behind me, making me jump.
I turned around to see Zach smirking at me.
He was wearing a tuxedo and a green tie, exactly the same color as my dress.
I wonder if he’d done that on purpose…
“Jake wants it to be spiked,” I told him.
“Of course he does,” Zach scoffed. “He’s…well, Jake.”
“Yeah, I realize. Find any food yet?”
He smiled (with teeth) and shook his head, causing a few black hairs to fall out of place.
“Just a few kisses,” he said, making my eyebrows crease in confusion.
    “What?” I choked.
He stretched his arm towards me and opened his fist, revealing four Hershey kisses.
“See?” he asked, taking a step towards me. “Kisses.”
“Oh,” I said, looking down. “Well, I should get back to Jake.”
“You sure about that?” he asked, nodding towards the dance floor, where he was making out with one of Erica’s friends. “He looks a little preoccupied. Besides, I have no one to dance with.”
Was Zach flirting with me or did he just feel bad that my date bailed on me?
Either way, my heart hammered in my chest with excitement.
Just the fact that this was the second time we’d spoken in one day made me happy.
“I’ll dance with you,” I said, looking up into his familiar, blue eyes.
“I was hoping you’d say that,” he said with a smile, taking my hand and leading me towards the dancing group of teenagers.
There was a slow song playing now, so Zach wrapped his hands around my waist, sending chills down my spine and giving me anxious butterflies.
I hesitantly locked my arms around the back of his neck, like I used to do whenever we kissed, never taking my eyes off his.
We swayed, our feet moving at a rhythmic pace.
    It was effortless.
“Layne,” he said suddenly, making me realize how close our faces were to each other.
“Mhmm?” I whispered, my eyes still focused on his.
“I-uh…” he started before swallowing nervously. “I made a mistake.”
I bit my lip and looked down, not knowing what he was about to tell me.
“What is it?” I asked softly, still avoiding his stare.
He was quiet for a moment until saying; “I made a mistake when I broke up with you.”
“Yeah,” I said without hesitation. “You broke my heart.”
“I know,” he said, inching his face closer to mine. “I didn’t want to hurt you for such a long time. I only wanted to look out for you.”
“I know it,” I whispered, resting my head against his chest; I felt like I had permission now that he was apologizing to me.
“Do you still love me?” he suddenly asked, fiddling with my infinity necklace that I hadn’t taken off since the day he gave it to me.
“I’ll always love you,” I said, finally looking up into his eyes again.
“No, I mean…do you still love me as much as you did before?”
    “Of course I do.”
“Good, because I love you too,” he whispered in my ear, making my heart beat so fast I thought It’d fly out of my chest, “I love you more everyday and I don’t know what I’m going to do about it.”
I smiled, grateful that our sparked hadn’t dimmed after all these months apart.
“I want to make you happy again. I miss us, Layne. I miss you. I know I’m graduating soon, but I want to make the best out of the time we still have left. I want to love you. Even though I’ll be gone soon, I want to end this year on a good note. I’m sorry…about everything. I mean, you don’t have to forgive me for what I did. I just want us to be…well, us again.”
“Zach, I have to forgive you. I want us to be us again, too.”
We looked at each other for a moment, our eyes sparkling with emotion.
Suddenly, Zach moved his lips closer to my ear, pressing our bodies closer together, eliminating all the space between us and whispered, “Kiss me,” like we use to do all the time to tease each other.
    So I did.
    asdfghjkl; okay

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Sixty-Four
“Stupid dress!” I groaned, throwing one of my heels against the wall in anger.
How did I gain so much weight that I couldn’t even fit into my prom dress that about three weeks ago- three weeks ago!
I sighed in frustration, still trying to zip it up even though I knew I wouldn’t be able to get it.
Suddenly, there was a knock on my door.
Expecting it to be Joey, I swung it open while trying to zip my dress at the same time; that’s why I was so shocked to see Zach standing before me.
We hadn’t talked since last month, before spring break (which, by the way, I spent in my house trying not to kill my brother or cry whenever he said I told you so).
“Hi,” he breathed as his eyes scanned over my body quickly before they met mine. “Wow.”
I blushed and bit my lip uncomfortably.
“Uh…sorry, I-uh…” he stuttered, avoiding my stare. “I heard a loud noise and I wanted to make sure you were okay.”
My brow creased in confusion, trying to think of what he could possibly be talking about.
“Oh,” I laughed softy, “I threw my shoe against the wall.”
“Your shoe?” he asked, pursing his lips.
“Yeah. I got angry because I’m too fat to fit into this stupid dress.”
I didn’t know why I was complaining to him or even talking to him.
I mean, he didn’t care about me, anyway.
“Why do you say that?” he asked.
“I can’t zip it,” I sighed, turning around to show him.
“Layne, if anything, it’s that you’re not fat enough,” he said. “It’s jammed.”
“Oh,” a whispered, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips when I felt his hands come in contact with my skin.
“There,” he said once my dress was all zipped up.
“Thanks,” I said, turning around to look into his pretty eyes again.
“No problem,” he said, looking down and then back up at me again. “I didn’t know you were going to prom.”
I bit my lip and nodded slightly, looking at the wall.
“With who?” he asked, his voice a little bit louder than before.
    “Jake.”
“Jake Campiello? I know it’s none of my business, Layne, but why him?”
I sighed, plying with one of the curls that fell around my face.
“He asked me,” I said with a shrug. “I wasn’t going to go unless somebody asked me. Prom’s not really my thing.”
“I know,” was all he said. “Well, be careful with him.”
    I nodded, rolling my eyes.
    Like you care, I thought.
“Anyway,” I said, changing the subject. “Are you going?”
“I might stop by and take some food,” he shrugged, making me laugh. “But I don’t think I’ll stay.”
    “Cool,” was all I said.
What was I supped to say?
This whole thing was just uncomfortable.
I was never uncomfortable around Zach, but things were different now.
There was a bit of awkward silence until we heard the hallway door swing open and hit the wall forcefully.
“Aye sexy!” he called once he saw me standing in my doorframe.
“One second, Jake!” I yelled back to him, peering at him over Zach’s shoulder.
I walked back into my room to find my clutch and looked in the mirror once more before leaving.
I was wearing a long, loose, light green dress that matched my eyes.
The bottom was made of a silk slip and thin, loose material that trailed behind me whenever I walked.
The top was sparkly, strapless, and very fitted.
My reddish-brown hair was curled and pinned to the back of my head with some other curls framing my face.
I looked pretty good, which made me happy since I hadn’t gotten this dressed up since Zach and I broke up.
I didn’t really care, but I figured since Casey and Sarah would probably want pictures, I should at least look a little decent.
Zach was still holding the door open with one arm outstretched when Jake walked into my room.
He was wearing a black tuxedo and a green tie that didn’t even match my dress.
“You look f*cking gorgeous,” he said loudly, making me a little uncomfortable.
“Thanks,” I mumbled shyly, turning around to look at him.
“What’s pretty boy doing here?” he asked, nodding towards Zach.
Zach’s jaw clenched in anger and he narrowed his eyes at Jake.
“Don’t call him that, Jake,” I said, grabbing his hand. “Come on. Let’s go.”
Jake smirked and unlocked his hand from mine, moving it around my waist instead, his fingers dangerously close to my butt.
I sighed as we passed Zach on our way out of my room.
His eyes were glaring at Jake’s hands now, like they were touching something that was his.
    And they were.
“Be careful,” he mouthed to me as we passed him.
“Okay,” I mouthed back, smiling a little.
With that, he shut my door and walked towards his room.
    Jake is obnoxious af

“So here’s the plan,” Joey said as we walked towards the cafeteria. “We’ll go in for dinner and pretend like we’re in a rush to eat and start studying because we have a big test tomorrow. Jake sits with the football team and we both know that’s where Zach has been sitting lately, so he’ll probably be there. I’ll pretend to be getting food while you flirt it up, alright?”
“In front of Zach?” I said with a frown, not wanting to hurt Zach’s feelings.
“Do you want to get him back or not?”
I groaned quietly and hung my head, suddenly realizing that maybe this wasn’t the best idea ever.
“Listen, Jake’s one of the biggest flirts at this school, alright? It’ll be super easy for you to do this. I promise.”
But, I did want Zach back…more than anything.
So, when Joey led me to the table full of football players, I couldn’t help but feel a range of emotions when I saw him sitting there with them.
“Dude, since when do we let chicks sit with us?” one of the boys groaned, slumping in his seat.
I blushed and Joey rolled his eyes.
“We have a huge test tomorrow, alright? We’re just having a little snack until we need to start studying again. We’ll be out of here in no time. Problem?” Joey asked, raising his eyebrows defensively.
Man, he was good at this.
“Guess not,” the boy shrugged, turning back to his friends as talking.
Zach was right across from me.
Zach was right across from me!
Don’t look at him, don’t look at him, don’t look at him, I thought.
My head was screaming with all sorts of emotions but my mouth didn’t speak a word as I took the only available seat next to who I assumed was Jake judging by his buzz cut and the way he had no shame in checking me out as I walked towards him.
I can’t do this, I suddenly thought, looking down at my plate, but it was too late by that point.
“Layne, I’m gonna go get a drink. Want anything?” Joey said, getting up out of his chair.
I looked up at him and shook my head before he walked away, leaving me alone at the football team table.
I took a bite out of my bread, chewing without looking up until I felt somebody’s arm sling across my shoulders.
I looked up and to my left to see Jake with a smug smile on his face.
“What’s your name, sweet heart?” he asked, using the nickname Zach always used on me while everybody else at the table carried on with their other conversations.
    “Layne,” I choked.
“Oh! So you’re the pretty girl Zach was stupid enough to break up with!” he chuckled, shooting a competitive look in Zach’s direction.
Zach glared at him, his fists clenching his silverware so forcefully that I thought the metal might snap.
He clearly wasn’t focusing in on the conversations going on around him, but rather the one going on between Jake and me.
I coughed uncomfortably before shifting my eyes to the soda fountain.
    Where was Joey?
I looked all around the dining hall only to find him talking to Matt at our usual table.
I sighed, wishing I’d never agreed to follow through with this stupid plan.
“Sorry, princess. I didn’t mean to upset you,” Jake said, using his hand to force my gaze back to his.
“It’s fine,” I said with a shrug, feeling extremely uncomfortable with his hand on my face.
“Has anyone ever told you how gorgeous you are?” he said, looking into my eyes and dropping his hand from my jaw.
I could smell his cigarette breath all over me and I wanted to throw up.
I looked over at Zach and bit my lip.
He was starring back at me.
We were communicating through looks; it was the first form of communication we’d had in months.
His eyes got angry and his jaw clenched, like it always did when he got mad.
Suddenly, his head snapped towards Jake.
“Can you not do this in front of me?” he growled, enraged.
“Fine,” Jake laughed, taking my hand underneath the table.
I looked up at him, completely confused as to what he was doing.
“Come with me, Layne,” he said, standing up with my hand in his.
I swallowed nervously as Jake led me out of the cafeteria, looking behind my shoulder once more to see Zach’s expression.
He looked furious and defeated, and that’s when I knew our plan had worked.
“What dorm do you live in, babe?” he asked, using my least favorite nickname.
    “Cottage,” I muttered. “Third floor.”
“So, you and Zach had rooms right next to each other while you were going out? Damn. You kids must’ve done a lot of crazy sh*t.”
“Our relationship wasn’t like that,” I said, suddenly feeling defensive and rolling my eyes.
“Aw, relax. You know I’m only kidding. Besides, it’s not like any of that matters anymore. I mean, you don’t still have feelings for him, do you?” he asked, searching my eyes for the truth.
Unfortunately, he got everything but the truth.
“No,” I lied. “Not at all.”
“Great. Listen,” he said, rubbing his hands together for warmth as we neared my dorm. “There’s going to be this awesome party tomorrow night at my old buddy’s house. He’s in college, so there’s going to be a ton of alcohol and sh*t but they’re always really fun. Come with me?”
So Joey was right all along.
Hopefully this all worked out the way I wanted it to.
“Yeah,” I said with a smile. “Sounds fun. What should I wear?”
He smirked and licked his lips, his eyes scanning over my body once again.
“Anything your little heart desires,” he said.
I laughed nervously and opened the door to my building.
“Alright, then. What time are you picking me up?” I asked, trying to remain calm even though I was freaking out inside.
    “How does seven sound?”
    “Perfect. See you then.”
Is everybody in school again yet? I just need to know so I don't post new chapters at 2 in the afternoon (like I am now) when nobody's online.

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Fifty-Eight
Two months later, Joey and I were sitting in my room and I started randomly crying like I always did when I heard music blasting from Zach’s room.
Zach never blasted music before we started dating.
He couldn’t stand it, so the fact that he liked to play loud music now baffled me.
I felt like he was growing and changing and I didn’t know why or how and I just wanted to talk to him and make sure he was still as sweet as he’d been before.
“You’re a mess, Layne,” Joey sighed, running a hand down his face.
“I know,” I sobbed into my bed sheets, throwing my favorite book on the ground.
He stayed silent for a moment before his head perked up in excitement.
“What is it?” I muttered with my cheek squished against my pillow.
“I have an idea,” he said, standing up and sitting on the edge of my bed.
“I’m not going to try and talk him out of it,” I said. “And I’m not going to ‘show him what he’s missing’ by wearing sexy clothes.”
That was Casey’s idea a few weeks ago.
“No, no,” said Joey. “This idea is the best one yet.”
    “Hit me.”
    “Jake Campiello.”
Jake Campiello was one of those stereotypical, bad-boy seniors with scary clothes, a motorcycle, and a buzz cut.
    “What about him?”
“He brings girls to college parties all the time. Flirt with him and convince him to take you to one.”
“What kind of idea is that?”
    “A good one.”
“What’s so good about it? Why would going to a college party with Jake Campiello solve any of my hopeless problems?”
“Well, if you wear something dramatic and we somehow get Zach to see you leaving with Jake on his motorcycle, maybe he’ll try to stop you or something.”
    “And if he doesn’t?”
“Then you’ll go to a really awesome college party, have a good time, and make him jealous.”
“He’s not going to be jealous if I have a good time with another boy, Joey. That’s exactly what he wants. He wants me to move on and meet someone else.”
“Yeah, but if that someone else puts you in danger…” Joey started, smirking deviously. “I mean, come on, Layne. Jake has danger written all over him. If Zach really cared about you, he wouldn’t let you go anywhere near that freak.”
“So you’re saying I should put myself in danger to get Zach back?”
“What I’m saying is, I’d rather see you be put in danger and rescued by your kind-of-boyfriend than see you sit here and sulk all day, reading your favorite book over and over and over and over-”
    “Okay. I get it.”
“So, what then? You think it’s a good idea?”
“I think it’s the only thing that’ll work, if that’s what you mean.”
“Good. Now, let’s go find Jake, shall we?”
    “Thanks, Joey.”
“That’s what I’m here for, Layne.”

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Fifty-Five
    Zach’s POV
I looked to my side and saw Erica standing next to me.
She was tall enough that I didn’t have to look down to talk to her, like I had to with Layne.
“How did it feel?” she asked, raising a sharp eyebrow.
“What?” I asked, confusion clear across my face.
“You did break up with her, didn’t you?” she asked in that annoying little voice she used all the time.
“Yeah,” I told her, looking down and then back up into her almost black eyes. “You…you think I did the right thing, don’t you?”
“Of course you did, sweetie,” she said, pouting her bubblegum pink lips.
It was kind of gross how you could see where her orange makeup ended right before the top of her lip.
“Layne will thank you when she’s safe and happy with someone new,” she said, nodding her head in reassurance.
Suddenly, I had a quick flashback of sleeping with a girl who looked exactly like her at this very house just a few months ago.
    Should I ask?
Well, I could always just say, Sorry, I’m a bit drunk.
“Did I sleep with you?” I asked, my words slurring together a little.
Her jaw clenched and her lips twisted in anger.
I guess I asked the wrong question.
“You f*cking b*stard,” she sneered, giving me a pathetic b*tch slap across the face. “You’re a man wh*re. We already went over this, like, a few months ago. I mean, seriously. Sleeping around while you had a girlfriend? That’s sickening.”
“Actually, no,” I said innocently, shaking my head. “I slept with you before I met Layne, which reminds me…how come I took your advice to break up with her? Sorry. I’m a bit drunk.”
    Okay, I was really drunk.
“Oh,” she laughed bitterly. “You made the right choice, trust me. Aiden would be so f*cking proud, you f*cking murderer.”
Just because I was drunk doesn’t mean I couldn’t comprehend what she was saying to me.
In fact, I heard her loud and clear.
“Keep Aiden out of this,” I hissed pushing her away.
Her eyes softened a little and she didn’t say anything after that, so I figured she was done.
    I was still angry, though.
I suddenly felt enraged; not just about Erica, but about Aiden, my mother, and especially Layne.
I swallowed angrily and smashed my beer bottle on the ground, causing people to turn heads and quiet down.
Erica looked at me with shocked, scarred eyes and started to back away.
“I don’t deserve this. Nobody deserves this,” I said in a strained voice.
“Hey man,” one of my football buddies said beside me, placing a hand on my shoulder to steady me.
I was getting dizzier and dizzier by the second.
“Let me give you a ride back,” he said.
It was the first nice thing anyone (besides Layne) had done for me since Aiden died.
Sorry if this chapter doesn't make sense :/
I was really tired when I wrote it and I didn't really know how to fix it.

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Fifty-Four
    Zach’s POV
“F*ck,” I muttered as I walked away from Layne, who was still kneeling on the ground in the freezing rain.
What the f*ck did I just do?
I bit my lip, my brow creasing in worry.
My stomach started to churn unpleasantly, to point where I thought I might throw up the three bottles of booze I drank before Layne and Joey showed up.
I felt like one of those old cartoon characters with an angel on one shoulder, telling me to do the right thing, and a devil on the other, telling me to do what made sense.
Staying with Layne made sense; that was the evil part.
But, sometimes reality doesn’t make sense, and I think both Layne and I needed to realize that.
Erica saved me from doing something stupid, though.
She told me Layne would be better off without me, and she was right.
I was so grateful Erica showed up tonight, because if she hadn’t, I would’ve stayed with Layne and I would’ve put her in more danger.
    And God…God I loved her.
When you love someone, the last thing you want to do is hurt them.
I’ve hurt Layne continuously, like it’s my f*cking job.
    I couldn’t stand it anymore.
I knew I was ruining her life and I knew that the longer I stayed in it, the worse things were going to get for her.
    Bad luck revolved around me.
Though, seeing her on the ground crying like that broke me; it twisted my stomach in anxious knots, wondering whether I did the right thing or not.
    It made me so nervous.
I knew, however, that she’d get over me soon.
There are loads of nice guys at school who’ve been dying to take her out, nice guys with pleasant families and great futures ahead of them.
Layne would be so much better off with a guy like that.
It was nice of me to leave her in retrospect, right?
I was doing her a favor by breaking up with her first; I saved her.
It was the absolute least I could do after everything I’ve done to hurt her.
If only I could’ve left Aiden.
If only I was never born.
If only, if only, if only.
Tonight was the first night in a while where I felt like I’d finally made the right choice.
God knows I didn’t make the right choice one year ago today.
Aiden probably would’ve killed me by now for leaving Layne.
He’d probably say something along the lines of, “You c*nt.”
He grew up in a big, Irish family; it was their thing to swear like that.
The very thought of him and his family brought tears to my eyes, which wasn’t a good thing considering I’d just re-entered the party and already had a few tear stains on my cheeks after seeing Layne like that.
He was like my f*cking brother.
Jesus (or as he would say, Jaysus- he liked to imitate his father’s Irish accent).
Pictures of Aiden and Layne kept coming into my mind; enough of them to make me feel like I was dead.
Maybe breaking up with her wasn’t a good idea.
No, f*ck it, of course it was a good idea.
Erica knew what she was doing when she told me to let Layne go.
Then again…why the f*ck should I have trusted Erica?
I was a little bit drunk when she talked me into leaving my girlfriend, so why did I feel like it was a good idea?
    I don’t know.
My head immediately started to hurt, with all these contradicting thoughts running through my head.
The party had continued like nothing happened after I left Layne outside, but I couldn’t help but notice all the disappointed, sympathetic stares I was getting.
I walked into the kitchen, opened the cooler, and cracked open another beer when I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder.
Who do you guys think it is?

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Fifty-Two
It rained all day, through lunch, dance practice, dinner, and everything else that happened later that day; just a reminder that we’re teenagers and we should all be depressed.
Zach never came to dinner, so I assumed he was still in the infirmary, that is, until Joey ran up to me, soaking wet and taking in panicked, ragged breaths.
“He went to a party,” he breathed. “Mark Daly’s annual post New Year’s party.”
“F*ck,” I whispered, my brow creasing in panic.
“I’ll walk with you, but it’s, like, pouring rain out there,” he told me, sounding just as nervous as I felt.
Joey and Zach had gotten closer ever since Zach and I started dating.
They trusted each other and they had a lot in common…sports-wise anyway.
“How did he get there?” I asked.
“Some guys from the football team gave him a ride.”
“Why would they do that? Don’t they know what happened last year?”
“Everyone knows what happened last year.”
“So why would they offer him a ride to that stupid f*cking party?”
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.”
    “Great. Just great.”
“Come on,” said Joey, grabbing my hand. “We’ve got to get there before he does something stupid.”
I broke a sweat as we fast-walked to Mark’s house, but luckily you couldn’t tell because of the rain.
We looked like complete idiots, going to a party in soaking wet clothes.
I didn’t even have time to grab a jacket before we left, so I was left in a drenched outfit that consisted of a beige sweater, a maroon infinity scarf, jeans, and leather boots that were sure to be ruined by the end of the night.
It wasn’t a very long walk, but it felt like it took hours to get there with so many thoughts running through my head.
    What if Zach was drunk?
What if he was hitting on other girls?
What if he was crying in a corner making a fool out of himself?
Even worse, what if he’s feeling suicidal like Joey said he would be?
When we finally arrived at the house, music was blaring and all the lights were turned on like they were the last time I was here.
I got a strange feeling in my stomach, remembering what happened here at the last party when I barely even knew Zach.
“Hey, you alright?” Joey asked me. “You look a little pale.”
    I swallowed nervously and nodded.
“Mhmm,” I muttered, shooting him a fake smile.
Joey was like the sweet older brother I never had.
He actually cared about my feelings and looked out for me; I was surprised when I found out he’d never had a girlfriend a few months ago.
That’s why it hurt so much when I lied to him.
Of course I wasn’t okay, but what was I supposed to say?
Tell him to take care of Zach on his own?
    No way.
We were in this together; Zach meant a lot to both of us.
“You could wait out here if you want while I go check on him,” Joey said softly, searching my eyes for some sort of emotion.
I shuddered at the thought of being left alone at this house and shook my head.
“No!” I said a little to loud, making him jump. “Sorry. No. I don’t want to be alone here.”
“Right. Sorry. Okay, okay. Let’s go inside then. We’re wasting time.”
Joey grabbed my upper arm and dragged me inside that huge house in the Absolute Middle of Nowhere Vermont and led me through the crowd in the living room.
Our eyes scanned the entire area before we shrugged and continued towards the other rooms.
“Where is he?” I whimpered, my eyes starting to water after we looked through every room on the first floor.
“Where is who?” I heard a familiar voice say from behind me.
    Zach.
“Oh,” I breathed, spinning around to meet those beautiful, blue eyes I’d been longing to see since lunch. “You’re okay.”
I threw my arms around his torso and squeezed him tight.
“What does you mean ‘I’m okay’?” he asked, anger rising in his voice.
I bit my lip, pulling away from him to give him some space.
“I-uh…we just wanted to make sure you were alright. I didn’t know you went to a party until Joey told me and we wanted to make sure you weren’t drinking too much for anything,” I said with a shrug, earning a nudge in the rib from Joey.
“What?” I asked him, creasing my eyebrows in confusion.
“You know exactly what,” he muttered, glaring at me.
Joey never glared at me…what did I even say?
“Who f*cking told my girlfriend what today is?” Zach suddenly yelled, his face filled with pure rage as he clenched his jaw and squinted his eyes, causing a commotion.
“Who told her?” he screamed, his voice cracking.
He was glaring at Joey, but the question was sort of directed towards anyone, I guess.
“Zach, please,” I whispered, resting my hands on his chest. “It’s not a big deal.”
“Of course it’s a big deal,” he snapped, pushing my away from him. “You know exactly what today is and now you’re going to feel bad for me and try to comfort me and give me advice. Dammit, Layne. This isn’t what I want! This isn’t going to help me start over!”
“What do you want, then?” I asked. “Maybe we can fix things.”
“You can’t just fix the death of your best friend, Layne!” he screamed, causing people to stop talking and start whispering.
“Zach,” I said softly, trying not to make things worse. “Zach, it happened a year ago. It wasn’t you fault.”
“Today, Layne. It happened a year ago today and it was my own f*cking fault. You know that! Do you ever listen to a word I say to you?”
“Zach, I don’t want to fight with you. I love you.”
    “Well, you shouldn’t love me.”
“What? What are you talking about?”
“I hurt people. I’ve hurt you before and you know just as well as I do that I’ve put you in danger before.”
“I’m past it. Leave it alone, Zach, please,” I begged, my eyes watering.
“No, Layne. See, if we stay together, I’m just going to keep hurting you. I’m a monster. I just put people in danger. Bad luck revolves around me and there’s nothing I can do about it.”
    “So what?”
“So I don’t want you anywhere near me. I care about you too much. I cared about Aiden and look what happened to him. Look what happened to my mother. Jesus, Layne, if anything ever happened to you I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.”
    I'M SORRY IN ADVANCE OKAY.

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Fifty-One
The next few weeks were kind of uneventful, but I liked it that way.
I liked uneventful because Zach and I got to say “I love you” to each other at the most perfect times now and we kissed a lot and we joked around and had fun and we had each other’s back like any two best friends would.
On New Years Eve, Zach made a resolution to keep his positive attitude and new outlook on what his life could be like.
I made a resolution to always take care of the people I love.
I knew it was a cheesy resolution, but there was honestly nothing else I wanted to do or change about my present life.
    Everything was perfect.
I just wanted to make a promise to myself that I’d always take care of my loved ones.
Zach and I…we had it all figured out.
Or at least, that’s what it seemed like until his birthday came around.
It was also the day his mother and Aiden, his best friend, died.
Something bad always happened on his birthday (January 27th) whether his father invested in the wrong company or he got in a car crash with his best friend since they were both drunk because it was Zach’s Annual Depression Day.
I didn’t find all of this out until Joey told me at lunch on Friday.
Well, of course I knew about his mom and his best friend dying on the day he was born, but I didn’t know it was on January 27th.
“How are you?” Joey asked with a sympathetic face as I set down a plate of caesar salad.
    “I’m fine…” I said hesitantly. “Why?”
    His eyes widened.
“It’s Zach’s birthday,” he said, nearly making me choke on my own saliva. “You didn’t know?”
    I shook my head.
“Well, he probably didn’t tell you for a reason. He’s going to be in an extremely bad mood today.”
“Extremely?” I asked nervously, my eyes scanning the dining hall in search of him.
“Suicidal,” Joey said, making me gasp.
I gnawed on my bottom lip, my eyes still searching all over for him.
My heart was beating a million miles per second, hoping he was okay and not angry with me or anyone else for some reason we wouldn’t know.
“Don’t worry,” said Sarah. “If you pretend like you don’t know it’s his birthday, he won’t take it out on you.”
“Are you sure?” I asked softly, biting my pinky nail.
“I’m positive. Just pretend like everything’s fine,” she told me.
I nodded, taking a deep breath and trying to remain calm.
I knew today was going to be extremely difficult for Zach, so I wanted to make everything seem as normal as possible.
Normal was always good; normal was effortless for Zach and I.
I just hoped it’d be easy to act “normal” today.
“There he is,” Matt said, pointing a finger to the door, where Zach walked in, taking off his jacket that was covered in snowflakes and holding it in his arm.
He had dark circles under his eyes and his head hung a little lower than it normally would.
The cafeteria got quieter when he walked in.
I wanted everyone to keep talking; make today seem like any other day for him, but that was impossible considering everyone at this school was grieving over Aiden’s death that happened just one year ago today.
I wanted to run up to him and hug him and tell him I love him so much, but since I wouldn’t do that on a regular day, I had to restrain myself.
He got in line, head down with his hands in his pockets, and went through the buffet, throwing slobs of whatever was out onto his plate.
People whispered and wouldn’t stop starring at my poor Zach.
I wanted to get up and slap every one of them across the face and tell them to mind their own business, but I had to restrain myself from doing that, too.
Finally, after getting a cup of water he started towards our table.
I felt like a freak for starring at him for such a long time, so I turned my head back towards my plate and stuffed my face with lettuce.
I saw him sit down next to me out of the corner of my eye.
Act natural, I thought, continuing to chew and sitting up straight.
I swallowed nervously and turned to him.
    He was watching me carefully.
    I could tell.
It was the first time I’d seen him today, so now it made sense why he’d skipped breakfast.
He usually only skipped breakfast when he had a big test during first period.
However, I knew he didn’t have one today so that’s why I was so confused this morning as to why he didn’t show up.
    Now it all made sense.
I looked up into his blue eyes, which weren’t as glossy as they would normally be, but just as beautiful as they were on the day I first met him.
“Hi,” I breathed, captivated, as I moved my chair closer to his and rested my head on his upper arm.
“Hi beautiful,” he whispered into my ear, making me relax a little.
I smiled up at him, kissing his cheek before returning to my salad.
He didn’t even touch his plate, which was strange since he loved to eat.
“Aren’t you going to eat?” I asked him, earning glares from Joey, Sarah, Casey, and Matt.
“I’m not really that hungry today,” he said, slouching in his seat. “Besides, I’m not feeling too well so I think I might go to the infirmary instead of basketball practice.”
“Okay,” I whispered. “Let me know if you need anything. I love you.”
“I will,” he said, low enough so that nobody else at our table could hear, kissing the top of my head. “Thanks, sweet heart. I love you, too.”
With that, he got up and walked away from me.
Little did I know, I’d never see that sweet side of him again for a very, very long time.
    I'M SORRY IN ADVANCE OKAY.

The next morning I woke up to the sound of Zach’s voice saying, “Wake up! Wake up!” over and over again.
He sounded so excited that I got worried he might still believe in Santa Claus.
I yawned and my muscles before sitting up in bed and looking up at him with wide eyes.
“Good morning sunshinebeautifuldarilingangelsweetness. Santa got you room service,” he said with a grin.
I couldn’t help but notice how genuinely happy he was; he was so happy it made my stomach tickle with butterflies.
“How long have you been up?” I asked in a groggy voice.
“About an hour,” he told me with a shrug, making my eyes widen even more. “You’re a deep sleeper.”
My eyes shifted over to a cart parked in front of our bed with metal plates filled with eggs, ham, and toast, glasses full of water, and mugs of chamomile tea, my favorite.
“You got all my favorites!” I exclaimed in surprise.
“I practically live with you, Layne. Of course I got all your favorites,” he said.
“This is so nice of you, hadsomedarlinghoneysweetheart,” I said, imitating him. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he winked, helping me to the table in the corner of the room where we sat down and started to eat.
“Oh!” he said suddenly, with his mouth full of eggs. “I almost forgot. Santa left you something else.”
He got up from our little table and pulled a small, neatly wrapped present out of his basketball duffle bag
I gasped quietly, quickly standing up and running to my bag so I could take out his present, too.
“Give me mine first,” he immediately said, stretching out his hands to take it as I sat down across the table from him again.
“Okay,” I agreed, handing him the small-ish box in my hands.
He looked up at me and smirked before shaking the box in his hands, holding it up next to his ear like he was trying to figure out what it was.
I laughed impatiently while he shook the box for a few more seconds, making confused faces.
“Is it…hold on. Give me a few more seconds,” he said.
I waited a few more seconds.
    “Hmm…I have no idea.”
“Open it or I’ll take it back,” I threatened after a while.
“Okay, okay,” he laughed, ripping the wrapping paper to pieces and throwing them on the ground.
“You got me an iPod?” he yelled, his eyes widening.
“Well, it’s not exactly new. I had it for a few months until I got my iPhone. I didn’t have anything on it, so I filled it up with your favorites and got you sports headphones so you can wear it when you run. Look!” I said excitedly.
He looked incredulously from me down to the little device, scrolling through his new songs.
“You picked all my favorites!” he exclaimed happily. “It’s perfect. Thank you, Layne. Seriously. This is, like, the best Christmas present I’ve ever gotten.”
“You mean it?” I asked hopefully, blushing and biting my lip.
    “Yes. Thank you.”
    “You’re welcome.”
“Here,” he said, handing me the little box in his hands.
Wasting no time to guess what it was, I instantly started ripping the paper off the gift to reveal a little, black box.
    Jewelry.
    It was jewelry.
My heart sped up in my chest as I hesitantly opened the little, velvet box to find a dainty, sterling silver infinity necklace.
My eyes widened, looking up at Zach and smiling.
He smiled back; it wasn’t a smirk like he does when he’s trying to look sexy, no, this was a genuine grin with teeth.
An infinity necklace meant forever and always, right?
    Forever and always what?
Will Zach love me forever and always?
Suddenly, as if he could read my mind, he got up off of his chair and walked over to me, lending me his hand to stand up with him.
I took it, standing up out of my chair while he towered over me.
I embraced him in a tight hug and whispered, “Thank you so much.”
I felt him chuckle beneath me as he rested his hands on my waist.
“You know what it means, right?” he asked, making me blush further. “It means I’ll love you forever. No matter what happens. I’ve already come to the conclusion that there is nothing you could ever do to make me not love you because it already happened. I’m in love with you, Layne.”
My heart was beating so fast I’m sure he could feel it.
It bit my lip as feelings of happiness, relief, and love took over my emotions, making me entire body feel warm and crowded with gigantic, beautiful butterflies.
I wanted to started dancing right there, as if to say: He loves me. He loves me. Life is wonderful. He’ll love me forever and everything is so perfect.
But instead, I simply pulled away from him, looked into his bright, blue eyes and said, “I love you more. I’ll always love you more.”
I knew he’d deny it, but it was worth a shot anyway.
After all, it was the truth.
I was in love with Zach and I knew it because I’d never felt anything like love before I met him.

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Forty-Nine
I was so overwhelmed with happy emotions that I just through my arms around his neck and kissed him.
It was definitely the most passionate kiss we’d ever had.
It wasn’t long or sexy or sloppy; it was quick, sweet, and breathtaking.
And then we were apart again, looking into each other’s eyes, surrounded by quick-moving people who just didn’t seem to know how to use the term “excuse me”.
So, Zach took my hand again and we walked to the end of the sidewalk.
There were so many people here for Christmas time that the sidewalks had gates surrounding them and police officers literally had to herd people from one sidewalk to another using caution tape.
“You’d think we were sheep or something,” I said to Zach.
But, as soon as I looked up at him to see his expression after I’d made my funny remark, I noticed he wasn’t there.
But…he was still holding my hand, wasn’t he?
    I could feel it.
I could feel someone’s hand wrapped around mine, but I was surrounded by so many people that I wasn’t sure if it was Zach’s or not.
As people started to disperse, I soon noticed that it wasn’t Zach holding onto me at all.
Rather, it was an older man with tan skin and shiny, gelled, black hair.
My eyes widened in fear and I immediately stumbled backwards into some strangers, trying to break loose from the man’s grip, but he was too strong.
“Follow me, beautiful,” the man said, not even bothering to look back at me.
“Let go!” I screamed at him, tugging more.
My heart was beating a million miles per second.
“Zach!” I cried, trying to be loud enough that he could hear me over the bustling city noises surrounding us, even though I could barely hear my own thoughts. “Zach!”
Suddenly, somebody’s strong hand yanked my arm away from the strange man’s grip, spinning me to the left and away from the current of people moving towards Time Square.
“Argh,” he grumbled in frustration, this time putting his entire arm over my shoulders in a very protective grip.
“The disadvantages of bringing your overly attractive girlfriend to New York City on Christmas Eve,” he said, repeating what I’d said to him earlier today.
“Sorry,” I said, my voice still sounding panicked.
    What if I got lost?
What if I got kidnapped and never got to see Zach or my family again?
“Just stay with me,” he warned, yelling at me over the loud noises. “We’ve already made it this far. Now, let’s see if we can make it back to the hotel without either of us getting lost, shall we?”
I nodded and clung closer to him as we made our way to the hotel.
Two bellboys opened the large, French doors for us as we walked inside.
There was a huge Christmas tree in the center of the lobby, with decorative ornaments and wrapped, cardboard gifts underneath.
There was a man playing piano, too, with a hat turned upside-down for donations sitting on top of the big instrument.
I dropped a dollar in his homemade tip jar, shooting him a smile as we walked by.
I loved the feeling of Christmas; always have, but being here with Zach in New York City around this time of year made everything more perfect.
After giving the hostess my mom’s phone and credit card number, we got our room key and took the elevator up to our room.
It was very pretty, with cranberry colored curtains, ivory bed sheets, dark brown furniture, and a bathroom with marbled floors and countertops.
Needless to say, it was fancy, and I could feel myself getting more and more nervous by the second.
I didn’t want Zach to push me to do anything tonight now that we were away from everything at were sharing a hotel room together, especially considering my parents were the ones who paid for this whole trip.
Knowing him, though, he would never do that to me.
“I’m going to take a shower,” I told him after I set my bags on the ground.
“Okay,” he said. “I’ll take one after you.”
He flopped down on the soft, white, king-sized bed in the middle of our room and flipped on the TV.
I dug through my black back, found my silk, red Victoria’s Secret pajamas, clean underwear that matched, and my toothbrush.
After taking a quick shower, I put on my pajamas and brushed my teeth.
When I got out, Zach was already fast asleep on the bed.
I rolled my eyes and laughed quietly, walking over to him and carefully slipping off his shoes, which, of course, made him wake up.
“Sorry,” I whispered, biting my lip. “You fell asleep.”
“I can see that,” he said in a sleepy voice.
He sat up and checked me out, his eyes scanning from my eyes to my feet.
“Damn,” he said, his face flushing slightly. “You don’t wear those pajamas at school.”
“I wanted to look nice,” I shrugged, my face red.
“You look better than nice,” he breathed, pulling me towards him by my waist.
I crawled on top of his torso and kissed him numerous times, our lips morphing together until we were one.
Our hands got tangled in the other’s hair, trying to pull each other closer to the point where we could barely breathe.
I pulled away after a while, resting my head on the top of his chest and sighing contently.
“You’re so good at kissing,” Zach mumbled, combing his fingers through my hair.
“So are you,” I whispered back before yawning.
“Do you mind sitting up for a second, Laynie? I have to change into my pajamas.”
“And by pajamas do you mean boxers?”
“Precisely,” he laughed. “I’m just going to save my shower for the morning.”
    “Okay.”
With that, he stripped down to his boxers and slid back next to me in bed, kissing me once more on the forehead before I drifted to sleep.
It was nice to know we could be so comfortable around each other, even as boyfriend and girlfriend.
Well, he was my best friend, too.
    He was my everything.

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Forty-Seven
“Don’t let go of my hand today,” Zach said, his eyes so stern I practically burst out laughing.
“I’m serious, baby,” he said, taking hold of my hand.
I gave him a stern look and shook my head.
“You know I hate that nickname,” I said, frowning.
“Right,” he said. “Sorry. I’m experimenting today.”
“I’ve noticed,” I said, wiggling my eyebrows.
“What I meant to say was, I’m serious, sweetheart.”
    “Better.”
    “But I always use sweetheart.”
    “Then think of something else.”
“Beautiful? Darling? Angel? Sunshine?” he asked, making me laugh so hard I almost spilled the cup of hot chocolate I bought before we boarded the train.
Luckily, there weren’t very many people on the train, considering it was Christmas Eve and everything.
    He groaned in frustration.
    “What’s wrong with those names?”
“Nothing,” I laughed, tilting my head to the side. “You’re just so cute.”
    “You’re cuter.”
    “No. You are.”
“No, beautifuldarlingangelsweetheartsunshine. You are,” he said, making me laugh even more.
“Oh great,” I laughed, “Are we one of those couples now?”
    “What do you mean?”
“You know, like one of those really annoying couples?”
Zach chuckled and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear, smiling to himself.
“Who could possibly find us annoying?”
I turned my head just in time to see a grumpy, old woman roll her eyes.
I blushed and shrunk my head, looking down in shame.
“I guess we are,” I mumbled.
Zach just smiled back at me and wrapped his arms around my shoulders.
The train was unusually cold, despite the fact that it had heating.
Eventually, the rocking of the train made me fall asleep.
What seemed like minutes later, I heard Zach’s voice.
“Laynie,” he sang, rubbing my cheek with his thumb. “Time to wake up.”
I yawned and stretch, taking in my surroundings.
We were definitely in an underground railroad station in New York.
I’d only taken the train here once, but I knew this was definitely it.
“We’re here!” I gasped excitedly, immediately standing up. “Come on, Zach! We need to find a cab.”
He chuckled, standing up and looping his arm through mine with his basketball duffle bag around his shoulder.
As soon as we got off the train, we were surrounded by a large mob of people, some rushing and some taking their time.
Zach looked down at me with a serious face as if to say, “We’re going in.”
    And we did.
I kept my arm locked with his as we squirmed through hundreds of people, making our way to the streets above.
There were lots of girls around my age walking around; pretty girls with nice clothes and white smiles, making me feel self-conscious whenever they fluttered their eyelashes in Zach’s direction.
Some girls even whispered in their friends’ ears as they walked by him, stealing sneaky glances and giggling to themselves.
    I rolled my eyes.
“The disadvantages of bringing your extremely handsome boyfriend to New York City for a day,” I muttered.
“None of them compare to you, gorgeous,” he whispered in my ear, making me bite my lip and blush intensely.
After walking to a cab, we rode it to Broadway, located the theater first, and then found a restaurant nearby.
It was a fancy, French restaurant that was kind of expensive, but that’s what happens when your mom gives you permission to use her credit card!
“I don’t take French,” Zach said, squinting his eyes at the menu, as if that would help him translate it.
“I can help,” I told him, smiling.
“What’s un croque monsieur?” he asked with a horrible French accent.
“It’s a grilled ham and cheese sandwich,” I laughed. “It’s really popular in France. I think I’ll get the same thing.”
After eating lunch, we headed over to the David H. Koch Theater, got out tickets approved, bought some candy, and sat in row five, seats A and B.
The show started almost immediately and it was absolutely amazing.
It was astonishing to see the dancers I’ve looked up to so much since learning the Sugar Plum Fairy Dance, but it did lower my self-esteem a little.
    I couldn’t help it.
They were all so beautiful and graceful and they made dancing looking effortless.
When my dance came on, though, Zach turned to me and whispered, “I liked your version better.”
I couldn’t help but smile slightly, even though I knew it wasn’t true and he was just trying to be nice.
That’s what makes me so happy, though.
The fact that Zach was constantly trying to make me feel good about myself is what made me happy.
    I loved him for it.
Of course, he was perfect, too, and I tried to remind him as much as he reminded me.
By the time the show was over and we walked back outside again, it was snowing big, fluffy speckles.
I looked up at the dark, night sky and smiled.
“Everything is so perfect right now, Zach,” I admitted, crinkling my nose as a snowflake felt on its tip. “Thanks for being my best friend.”
“Thanks for being mine, too,” he said, taking my hand and kissing it.

    Lend Me Your Heart
    Forty-Six
“You mean to tell me,” I whispered in disbelief, “You got Zach and I tickets to take a train to New York City, see the Nutcracker, spend the night, and take a train back home on Christmas Day?”
    “Yes, sweetie!” my mother squealed.
I knew, judging by the looks on my brother’s and dad’s faces that they weren’t the ones to agree to this, but this is what my mom had always wanted for me: friends, a boyfriend, and to be, well, happy.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love the idea.
“What hotel are we staying at?” I asked.
“The St. Regis Hotel. You’ll get there, give them my credit card number and phone number, and they’ll set everything up from there. Everything’s already been planned for you.”
I gasped in shock, throwing my arms around my mother in pure astonishment.
“How did you afford all of this?” I asked, my eyes wide.
“Never ask somebody how he or she paid for a Christmas gift,” she scolded, pointing her finger at my nose.
    “No really, Mom. How?”
    She rolled her eyes.
“You’ve worked hard this year, honey. Getting good grades at private school is a hard thing to do, and yet you’ve managed to balance that, dance, and a boyfriend all at once. We’re proud of you and this is your reward, so don’t thank me, sweetie. Thank yourself! Oh, and thank your father too,” she said, lowering her voice so he didn’t hear her. “He paid for most of it.”
I immediately ran towards my father and embraced him in a huge hug, feeling his belly move up and down while he laughed.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” I repeated over and over again, hoping he knew how grateful I was. “We’ll be on our absolute best behavior. I promise.”
“Good,” he laughed. “Be safe. Zachary, don’t you dare lose sight of my daughter. She’s a sixteen-year-old girl and you need to keep a watchful eye on her. I trust you. Don’t ruin it for yourself.”
“I’ll make sure nothing happens to her, sir,” Zach said, smiling broadly.
“Listen to me,” my dad said, looking me in the eye. “Once you get off that train, find a cab and ask him to take you to Broadway. Once you’re there, get something to eat. You’ll be able to walk to the theater from there if you plug the directions into your iPhone. It’s only a two-minute walk. After the show, walk back to the hotel and give the hostess your mother’s phone number and credit card number.”
He handed me my mom’s credit card.
“After that, you go right to sleep, get up the next morning, have breakfast at the hotel, and take a cab back to the train. You hear me?”
I nodded, looking at him with big, hopeful eyes.
“Here’s some extra cash just incase,” he said, handing me three hundred-dollar bills, making my eyes widen even more. “I don’t expect you to spend all of it. It’s for emergencies only.”
“Yes, daddy. Thank you,” I said, hugging him once more.
“Hey! How come I don’t get extra money!” my brother whined from behind us.
“Like I said,” my dad laughed, “It’s for emergencies only.”
“Okay, okay, she gets it!” my mom said excitedly. “You’re train leaves at twelve so eat something, get dressed, pack a bag, and let’s go! Remember to put the money somewhere important! Layne, give Zach some, too.”
    “Mrs. Davis-”
    “Take the money, Zach.”
“Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Davis.”
“You are very welcome, Zachary,” my parent said in unison, shooing us away.
I immediately ran upstairs, trying to find something classy to wear.
    I finally decided on a something Christmas-y.
I wore a strapless dress with a black bottom, bow in the middle, and gold top, black tights, ankle boots, and a pea coat with cold buttons to top it all off.

I remembered to pack a flattering pair of flattering, Victoria’s Secret pajamas (just incase), a toothbrush, cute socks and underwear, a cozy outfit and shoes to wear on the train ride back home, and of course, Zach’s Christmas present (just incase he wanted to open it there).
I lightly curled my reddish-brown hair, put on some gold eye shadow to match my outfit, and I was done in under and hour.
I carefully walked downstairs in my fancy outfit and met Zach at the kitchen counter.
He was eating one of my mom’s ‘famous’ pizza bagels.
    “Want one?” my mom asked.
“Yes please,” I agreed, unsure of when the next time I’d be able to eat would be.
When she turned to make my bagel, Zach turned his head towards me and practically undressed me with his eyes.
“Zach,” I giggled nervously, shifting in my seat.
“Sorry,” he said, shaking his head. “You look stunning.”
I looked over his fancy tuxedo and red tie, nodding my head.
“You don’t look too bad yourself,” I admitted, feeling myself blush.
Then my eyes fell to his ‘Clearwater Creak Basketball’ duffle bag lying on the ground.
“But your bag doesn’t match your outfit,” I scolded, jokingly looking at him in disapproval.
“Sorry we aren’t all as perfect as you are, Laynie,” he said, using a nickname he’d never used on me before.
“I’m not perfect,” I muttered, blushing uncontrollably.
He chuckled and leaned in closer to my ear, whispering, “Especially when you blush.”
“Stop it!” I giggled, hiding my face.
“Never,” he whispered, his hot breath sending making goose bumps appear on my neck.
Suddenly, as my mother started to turn around, Zach sat up and pretended like nothing was going on.
“Here you go, honey,” my mom said, handing me my plate. “Ten minutes and we’re off.”
