Torment
~Chapter 4~
Well, it’s Friday. The day of the Fall Ball, I go to school. Vanessa comes home on the bus with me and my mom wants to start immediately on getting us ready for the dance. She is so anxious. I’m anxious about tomorrow because of two reasons. One, the dance torture will be over and two, I get to change my hair. Well, after hours of makeup, heat, hairspray, and getting the dresses to fit perfect. We are ready. We practice walking in our shoes. It’s not often we wear high heels. I’d much rather wear my gray converses. Vanessa and I officially look like my mother’s real life Barbie dolls. These are our outfits… (Vanessa’s: http://www.polyvore.com/vanessas_fall_ball_look/set?id=51378300) and mine: (http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=51379054). My mom took a million pictures and then dropped us off. “I’ll see you guys at 11 when I pick you up right here!” “Okay.” We both respond with the same tone of voice. We both walk into the gym. “Damn they look hot when they try to look good.” I hear one of the guys say. The whole group of popular boys was checking us out. I actually felt the sensation of popularity I once knew so well. That was until Emily starts to walk towards me. She heard the guys talking too. And boy did she look angry. She struts towards us with her two wannabes following shortly behind her. Although I hate to admit it, Emily looked as gorgeous as always. (http://www.polyvore.com/cgi/set?id=51379655).
“Look who actually looks like girls tonight!”
“Leave us alone Emily.”
“You’d like that wouldn’t you Ava?”
“Why do you hate me so much?”
“Why don’t you go throw up a little more… You’re looking a little fatter than usual.”
“Emily let’s go.” Her boyfriend, James says while grabbing her arm.
She tugs her arm out of his grip. “Not until I’m done.”
James just rolls his eyes with a sad expression.
“Attempted suicide lately, Vanessa?”
“No. That was over a year ago. I’m better now.” Vanessa speaks.
“Ha! We’ll see. Well bye losers, have fun with all your friends… Oh wait, I’m truly sorry, I forgot you had none, my bad.” She says sarcastically sincere and follows through with a snicker. She starts to strut away. “Let’s go James.” She snaps her fingers. James just looks at us like he was going to cry. “Don’t listen to her, you two look beautiful, you guys always do.” James whispers to us so Emily can’t hear. He follows her. Vanessa and I exchange glances. How does obnoxious Emily end up with such a sweet and sincere boyfriend? James is the quarterback of the football team. I always thought he was as cruel hearted as Emily. As the night goes on Vanessa and I actually have fun. All the guys keep whispering about how good we look, even the upperclassmen. Maybe I’ve been going about this all wrong. Maybe I should embrace the more girly me. Later that night, Emily and James catch my eye. They are standing in the corner of the gym yelling at each other. I can’t hear them, but I can sort of read their lips. James says, “I wish you wouldn’t treat people so badly.”
“Oh, James, they don’t deserve my nice side.”
“Do you even have a nice side, because I cant seem to find it.”
“How dare you say that! Take it back!” She demands.
“No, I won’t take it back! I think that you are so insecure that you have to bring out everyone else’s insecurities in the open just so you can feel better about yourself! You and Ava used to be the best of friends, that couple of girls that everyone was jealous of their friendship. But, you just ended it, and why Emily, why did you end that friendship!?”
“Don’t yell at me like that!” Emily starts to get red faced and tear up.
“Well don’t be such a b*tch then! Because trust me, you are no where near perfect either, so don’t think that you are.”
Emily just stands there, speechless for the first time in her life. James starts to walk away, leaving her there, but before he gets too far away, he yells back to her.
“And by the way if you didn’t already figure this out, we’re over!”
Emily just broke down. I saw James walk out of the gym and go outside. Emily grabbed the wannabes and ran to the bathroom.
“Vanessa, I’ll be right back… I got to do something.”
“Okay…” She says in a weary voice.
