Identity. Chapter 1: Introduction.
When I open my eyes, I'm laying in my old bed, in my old house. Everything is blurry.I can't see much, and there's a horrid stench in the air. My first thought is something like "Oh my God, it's hot in here." and that's when I realized what was going on. Fire. I gasped, and smoke entered my lungs, seeming to wrap around them tightly. I could barely breathe at this point I get out of bed as fast as I can and run over to my bedroom door. When I try and turn the doorknob to get out of the room, it turns to ash. Suddenly, everythingaround me turns to ash, and I'm frozen in place. Next thing I know, the old floor boards beneath my feet give out, and I'm falling.
I sat straight up in bed, shaking. (Technically, it's not my bed. But I'm trying to get used to it.- I looked around, expecting to see smoke or ash. Instead, I saw my new room. Of course, I'd had another over-dramatic nightmare about the fire. I remembered that night all too well, as if it were a scene from a movie I'd seen last week, or a book with vivid descriptions. And whenever I took a moment and closed my eyes, there it was, burned into my memory infinitely. It was the day tradgedy struck a the Madison home. My home. Well, my old home. Now, I suppose the place I once called home is a large pile of soot and burnt metal. I shuddered at the thought. The house that I grew up in was now gone. Sixteen years worth of living, dissappeared overnight. My memories were now all I had left; the last one haunting me forever. I climbed out of bed and started walking to the bathroom. I'd almost reached the door, when a voice called.
"Morning Sunshine." he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. I looked over and saw Jesse, my new "house mate,"standing in the door frame of his room. "Hi." I said, and I kept walking. Jesse and I had never been friends. Honestly, he kinda of freaked me out.Still does, sometimes. It's almost as if we're from two different worlds. He's Jesse Davis. He hangs out with stoners andfreaks, and I'm Amber Madison, the most popular girl at Pacific High School. We'd never even associated besides the fact that we knew we were neighbors. Or at least, that's how things used to be. It's funny how fast things change. One month ago, I wouldn't have been caught dead with Jesse. Now, I get a ride to school with him everyday. Despite the fact that I can't stand him. We go our seperate ways when we get to school. A month ago, I would have been sitting at the popular table everyday with my "so-called best friends." and not dieting and hiding out in the library. It's not fair. I had it all, until my family lost everything in that fire. Both of my parents, gone. The firefighters had saved my little sister, Tara and I. She's in foster care right now, with what seems to be a nice family. She's making lots of friends at her new school. But me?
I can't cope with losing everything and everyone I ever loved. It just isn't fair.
