Prologue
Cady Mcmillan stared down at Halifax. She was really back. After three years in London, she was back. At sixteen, Cady knew she looked nothing like she had at thirteen when she had left Nova Scotia, and Canada altogether. She hadn’t been ugly then, but she hadn’t been the most gorgeous girl every either.
Now her hair was the same gold-red it had always been, her face had lost 99% of its baby fat, her azure eyes sparkled brightly even when she wasn’t smiling, and most of all, she was happy.
Happier than she’d ever been. Because no matter how far away she moved, no matter what the boys in her town had done to her, Port Maitland, Nova Scotia was her home. And it always would be. Cady worshipped the long bus rides to get to her school, they were the best for catching up with friends, and she loved being down at the lobster traps, she loved the waves and the rainy weather, and London hadn’t compared in the slightest, no matter how amazing it had been.
Cady ran her hand through her side part, her nervous habit, and fiddled with the hem of her oversized Cheshire Cat hoodie, which she had paired with light wash skinny jeans. She grabbed her bag from where she’d shoved it haphazardly under the seat. Well she’d put it there neatly, but apparently that wasn’t good enough for the flight attendant who’d shoved it farther back.
Cady had been seated next to two other girls her age, who were also heading to Port Maitland, named Kelsey Herfkins and Ariana Byers. The two of them were cousins. They’d hit it off, and exchanged cellphone numbers over the long flight, promising to keep in touch.
Cady had the window seat, and Ariana and Kelsey had waited for her in the main part of the terminal, the three of them heading off to do the various necessary proceedures together.
Then Cady spotted her dad and five older brothers, Kyle, Bayden, Cory, Sawyer, and the youngest out of them, only a year older than Cady, Brodie. She turned to Kelsey and Ariana.
“D’you want to meet my family?” She asked.
“Sure!” They agreed enthusiastically.
Cady led them over. “Dad, brothers, this is Kelsey and Ariana, they’re from Port Maitland as well. Kelsey and Ariana, this is my dad, Will, Kyle, Bayden, Cory, Sawyer and Brodie, aka Dad and brothers.”
The girls shook hands with all of them. “So, how are you two getting home girls?”
“We were supposed to have a ride, but that fell through, so we’ll probably end up renting a car.”
“Nonsense, we can take you home with us.” Will waved the thought away. “Cades, you and your friends can go with Bayden and Brodie, and we’ll meet you at home.”
“Wow, thank you.” Ariana said ernestly.
“It’s not a problem, right Bayden?” Will asked him.
He shook his head. “It just means Cady has to pay for McDonalds.” He said with a grin.
“I don’t think so Bay, driver always pays.” Cady stuck out her tongue.
He groaned good-naturedly, and twirled his keys around his hand. “Come on then.”
Cady grinned brightly, and motioned for Ariana and Kelsey to follow. Ariana fell in at Cady’s right, Kelsey at her left. The dark-haired girl on her right spoke quietly.
“Your brother is hot.”
“Which one? There’s five.” Cady replied chuckling.
“Bayden.” That was when Cady remembered that Ariana was two years older than Cady and Kelsey. The same age as Bayden.
“Well, unless he’s keeping it a secret, he doesn’t have a girlfriend.” Cady replied.
“Hm, Brodie’s not so bad looking either.” Kelsey mused as the boys walked ahead.
“Ooookay! That’s too much for one night!” Cady exclaimed, waving her hands around as much as she could while holding her luggage.
Kelsey and Ariana laughed, and nudged her with their elbows. “Please, there must be some guys here that you have a history with.”
“Oh there’s history alright.” Cady said quietly, as they arrived at the car. “And history might just repeat itself.”
