Falling Stars
*Chapter 1*
DAKOTA'S POV
Thud.
I slumped my head on my desk, staring at old engravings etched into the wood by previous students, trying to tune out my oh-so-boring History teacher droning on about ancient Persia.
"...from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Indus River in the east, Cyrus the Great had created the largest empire the world had ever seen," said Mr. Humphrey, the teacher, who was almost as ancient as Persia.
I resisted the urge to shout 'who cares?'; this class was so pointless.
"Miss Devore, how about you sleep somewhere besides my class and tell me which empire Cyrus the Great conquered first?" he ordered sternly.
Well, that got my attention. I immediately lifted my head up and struggled to remember the answer. "It was...er, it...it was..." I stammered. God, what was it? Mr. Humphrey's eyes shot lasers into mine.
"Don't know? How about another, then: what three leadership qualities was was Cyrus best known for?"
"Well, I, uh...don't exactly know..." I trailed off. I was making such a fool of myself. Feeling everyone's eyes on me, I glanced at my best friend, Tallara, who was making a 'yikes' face.
"Then what DO you know?"
"That he ruled for...20 to 23 years?" I guessed. By the look on his face, I guessed wrong.
"Incorrect, Miss Devore. He ruled for about 30 years. Please pay attention," he said, and got back to the lesson.
I breathed out, happy that I didn't get detention. I looked at Tallara again, who gave me a faux-smug-nice-going look. I rolled my eyes and was grateful when the final bell of the day rang out loud and clear. Boy, was that music to my ears. Thank the Lord it was Friday.
As soon as I shoved everything, including my brand-spanking-new iPhone, into my backpack, I felt it vibrate. Sighing, I dug it out again, hoping it wasn't Lucas, a recent ex who hadn't stopped calling all week. The caller ID read "Mommy<3". "Hello?" I answered.
"Dakota, honey, you need to get home right now," she told me, her usually light and airy voice sounding alarmingly desperate and scared.
"Why, is something wrong? Is Bonnie okay?" I asked frantically, referring to my 6-year-old sister.
"No, she's just fine. It's something worse! You need to be home. Now!"
"Tell me! What is it?" I asked, worry and anxiety coursing through my veins. What was going on?
"It's all over the news. A meteor, a massive one, is going to hit Earth. And there's nothing we can do about it!" Mom cried.
I almost dropped my phone.
