Chapter 2
"An object is thrown vertically and returns three seconds later. How high did it go, and what is its inital velocity?" I asked Scarlet, as we sat in the cafeteria later that afternoon.
Scarlet and I had the same physics class next period, and I was trying to get her to study with me for the test, but her mind seemed to be else where.
"Scarlet?" I nudged her elbow. "What's the answer?"
Scarlet jolted up, as she stared at me, blinking. "Sorry, what did you say?"
I frowned, letting out a sigh.
I've known Scarlet long enough to know that she only spaced out whenever she had something stuck on her mind.
"Forget it." I muttered, stuffing my index cards back in my bag.
Scarlet ran a hand through her strawberry blonde curls, sighing.
"I'm sorry, Riley." she groaned.
I gave her a weak smile. "It's fine." I paused. "Do you mind telling me what's on your mind, though?"
Scarlet's eyes widened, as her usual rosy cheeks paled.
I frowned, as Scarlet bit on her pouty lips, looking uneasy.
"Scar, you can tell me anything." I assured. "You know that, right?"
Scarlet gave me a tight smile, nodding slowly. "I know, Riley. But don't worry, there's nothing wrong."
I wasn't convinced, but I didn't have the energy to pressure her any further.
My eyes shifted towards the trash can, where I was planning to throw out my untouched lunch.
Suddenly, I felt someone's gaze on mine, as I turned around.
Sitting at the far end by himself was none other than Travis Kapone.
He had his legs kicked up on the table, and a smirk once he saw me looking back at him.
"Scarlet, do you know that guy?" I gestured over to Travis. "He's been looking this way all day."
Scarlet gulped, as she gave me an unconvincing shurg.
"I-I don't know." she muttered.
I frowned, as I stared back over to where Travis was.
He was no longer staring at my direction, but instead, he had a cigarette in between his fingertips.
Taking out a lighter from his pocket, he lit up the cigar, inhaling the smoke.
My eyes widened, as he let out a puff of smoke.
I turned to Scarlet, giving her a rough push in the shoulders.
"Scarlet, look at what's he's doing!" I hissed, as Scarlet rolled her eyes.
"So?" she asked with an irritated tone.
"He's smoking! You can't smoke on school grounds!"
Scarlet suddenly turned to me with a murderous glare, as she got up.
She slammed her chair against the table, as she gave me a cold stare.
"Can we stop talking about him already, Riley?" she snapped. "God, it's like you're obssessed with the guy. You've been so annoying today!"'
I stared at my best friend with disbelief, as she flipped her hair over her shoulder.
Scarlet wasn't acting like herself. She was acting like a monster with intense mood swings.
"What's wrong, Scar?" I asked in a tiny voice.
She let out an angry growl. "Why are you so interested in Travis Kapone?!" she suddenly screeched, causing everyone to turn in my direction. "Are you like in love with him or something?!"
My cheeks turned bright red, as I felt all eyes on me.
I gulped, turning over to where Travis once sat, but then I noticed that he was no longer there.
