    Girlfriend's Best Friend
    CHAPTER 39 x x x .
“You didn’t say anything, right?” I asked Jace quietly as we walked into the pizza shop. He promised he didn’t, and I knew he probably wouldn’t, but I still hated the fact that he knew.
We ordered a pie and sat down at a table. The second Carter sat down he stood right back up. “Oh, sh.i.t, anyone else see that really hot girl just walk past? Graham, come with me to talk to her,” he grabbed his hand and pulled him out.
“Don’t hold my hand, dude,” Graham pulled away and the two left to find the girl. Jace downed two iced teas while we waited forever for the pizza and left to go pee as Mattie told me and Duke about this band he found.
“Yo, they did show at my brother’s college a few months ago, I saw them with him. They were really good live,” I said.
“Do you have pictures from the concert?” he asked. I nodded, unlocked my phone and told him to go through to find them. I was just so hungry and still shaken up about last night to pay attention to anything.
“Oh my God!” Mattie’s mouth dropped and turned the phone to Duke who’s eyes widened and then smiled.
    “What?” I asked.
“How the f.uck did you get this??” Mattie asked, showing me the naked picture of Brooke that she sent me. I took my phone back and told them not to worry about it.
“Did she send that to you? Bro, at least send it to us too, we won’t show anyone!” Duke said.
“She sent it to me a while ago, I don’t know why,” I lied.
“Does your girlfriend know?” Duke asked.
“Regardless of if I have a girlfriend or not, Brooke’s still bangin’,” I bragged.
“You told them everything going on with you and Brooke?” Jace came back to the table. I turned my head and widened my eyes to get him to shut up.
“She just sent him a picture, calm down Jace,” Mattie laughed.
“Wait…there’s more, isn’t there?” Duke asked. When I didn’t answer he punched my arm and said, “Bro, are you getting with her??”
And that’s when I had to tell them the whole story, from start to finish.

    CHAPTER 37 x x x .
“Stop the car, I want to get out,” she said.
“Brooke, calm down, you’re not getting out, where would you go?” I tried to calm her down, realizing how wrong I was in this whole thing. Even though Brooke was the one to kiss me first, it was me who suggested we keep this going even after she said we could just pretend that nothing ever happened.
She kept yelling and cursing me out, but I wouldn’t let her leave and walk alone almost two miles back to her house all by herself. She kept telling me she hated me when I got a call from Kelli.
    “It’s her,” I said.
“I wouldn’t expect it to be anyone else,” she spat. I yelled at her that she was the one who wanted me to continue dating her, but she yelled back that I said I had to date Kel if I wanted to see her. I answered the phone so I didn’t have to answer Brooke, because she was right.
“Hello?” I answered, expecting an apology from Kelli.
“Cody, can we just forget this whole fight?” she asked.
“Babe, it’s only been half an hour, you miss me already? I miss you too,” I said, starting straight at Brooke to p.iss her off.
“I didn’t say that…” Kelli said. “I said I want to forget this whole fight. You’re right—I’m too dependent on you and I have to let you be your own person, just like how I have to be my own person.” We kept talking for ten more minutes settling everything out, and the whole time I was pulled over talking to her, Brooke sat there, looking down.
I cancelled the date I was supposed to have with Kelli tomorrow because I was ‘busy’ a.k.a I wanted to spend time with Brooke. She wasn’t even paying attention to my conversation, but she also never got out of the car. I told her that had to mean something.
“It meant nothing. I guess you’ll be spending your day alone tomorrow,” she actually got out of the car this time. I turned the car around and drove up next to her, my car going literally one mile per hour. She said she was going to have Jace pick her up, and I knew she picked him because he was an idiot just like me who would do anything for her. Brooke played with people, adjusting and using them like players in a game to benefit herself. Yet I still felt bad for her.
“Well then I’m staying here until he does. I’m not leaving you alone at night in the middle of the park,” I parked my car across from the bench she sat down on.
“You better go,” she warned me. “He’s going to see you and then he’ll figure everything out.” Jace would call when he was close, I knew I’d have time to leave.
“We both know eventually they’ll find out. We can’t expect to keep us a secret forever.”
“But keeping us a secret for as long as possible would be nice,” she said. I smiled. “So you do still care,” I got out of the car and walked over to her.
She yelled at me to get back in the car so I sat down on the bench and put my arm around her. She moved the other way so I did too, apologizing, “Brooke please, just hear me out. I’m sorry that I said that to you and I’m sorry that I yelled at you. I want this just as much as you do but you know what we have to do to keep this going. And I just—” I didn’t know what to say. I thought I loved Brooke. She was your favorite movie, your favorite book, your favorite song. The one you swore you were sick of yet you couldn’t stop watching, reading, listening to.
She kissed me and I didn’t even try to stop her. No matter what I said about Brooke, I was only trying to convince myself I didn’t love her. But I did. I loved her. I loved her. I loved her.
A car door slammed and Brooke and I both pulled up. Jace stood across the street, staring at me in total shock.
“Uh-um, Jace, hi,” Brooke tried to break the silence. “Did you..um..” She didn’t even know what to say.
“Yeah…” he judgingly looked her up and down. “Sorry for interrupting.”
Note: sorry I haven't updated in forever! I've been so beyond busy!

    Girlfriend's Best Friend
    CHAPTER 34 x x x .
After hours of talking, finally sorting everything out, and hooking up a little bit, we came up with a plan: I’d get her back into the group, get everyone to like her again, and then we’d act like we hate each other so no one else thought anything was going on between us.
This worked for a while, and it made Kelli treat both of us better knowing I ‘hated Brooke but knew how good of friends they were' just how she knew Brooke ‘didn’t like me but still supported Kelli and I dating.'
“I kind of wish we would go back to hanging out just the seven of us like we used to,” I said when Kelli and Brooke walked up to my friends and I in the park one day.
“Nice to see you too, Cody,” she rolled her crystal blue eyes, only to have them land right back on me.
“Be nice,” Kelli kissed me. Her entire attitude has changed once she realized how much I actually ‘hated’ Brooke. I wonder if she realized I only ‘hated’ her because Kelli lied to me to make me think she was a huge sl.ut.
I thought about that a lot actually. Not Kelli lying to me, but Brooke being a sl.ut. When I first met her, that’s all I called her. I tried to even convince my friends she was one. I acted like I hated her, but really I hated that I was so drawn to her when she had no interest in me. Then I thought maybe it was for a reason, that reason being Kel. But now I ended up with both of them. What was the reason for that?
“How’s the G.F?” Brooke flirted with Mattie.
“It’s pronounced girlfriend, you aren’t texting, you can’t say G.F,” I said, and Kelli tried not to smile.
“You know, I can’t just leave if you want,” Brooke threatened.
“Yes! Go!” I told her, but every single one of my friends begged her to stay.
Brooke’s ego grew bigger with every beg. I realized that’s why she and I were so compatible—we were c.ocky a.ssholes but the difference was, I acknowledged it.
Brooke brought up the time that Graham told her to go home, and you could immediately see the embarrassment on his face that he was so mean to her. “How many times do I have to apologize? I was in a bad mood and I thought something that wasn’t true,” he said.
“What did you think?” Kel asked. I couldn’t tell if she was annoyed or actually curious.
“It can’t be that important because I don’t even remember,” he lied. “I’m just sorry, okay Brooke?” Brooke flirted by not accepting his apology and he said he’d make it up to her. He put his skateboard out for her to stand on and took her somewhere else.
If I said it didn’t bother me that every guy loved Brooke, I’d be lying. It made me insecure, and that’s not who I was, and definitely not someone I wanted people to think I was. I knew she had to act that way to feel better about herself. I think the problem was that everyone wanted to be like her, rather than be with her. To have everyone at your fingertips, be incredibly attractive, and all the friends you’d ever need—who wouldn’t want that? But being around that all the time, you get outshined or you don’t know if you could keep up with it. So eventually, you stop hanging around it. I think she knew that, and that’s why she acted how she did.
She made everyone love her so it was harder to leave her.
Note: "So lonely inside, so busy out there, and all you wanted was somebody who cared."

    Creepers
    Chapter 1
I ran, that’s really what I’m best at anyway. My partner, Everett Rosenfield, was right beside me. We were currently running down the dirt road we have come to remember, huffing and puffing as we lug our army styled backpacks on our backs, guns held closely in case anything jumps out at us. My heart is pounding and I just want to get back to the safe house. I hear a rustle in the bushes beside us and I whip around with my gun raised, but Everett quickly shoves it back down when he points to the squirrel running just past us. We're both a bit edgy as we continue running down the road.
I see the small trail leading to the safe house and I elbow Everett to get his attention. He follows my gaze towards the trail and nods. We hurry over to the trail and look around. When we see the coast is clear we run for it, sprinting along the path side by side, protecting each other’s backs from the unknown. When we see the safe house we knock the secret code on the door. We wait as we hear the door unlatch and high five each other for staying alive another day’s hike. When the door opens we are met by a smiling man who goes by the name of Hook.
Hook is pretty much our leader. Everyone calls him Hook because he has a hook where his left hand should be. He had lost it not too long ago fighting right beside Everett and I. Hook is the oldest of our small clan, about 50 years old. On his chin, he grows a long gray beard and kind of resembles a mean and nasty biker, but under his scary posterior is a nice old man. He kind of reminds me of Santa Claus, if I believed in such miracles anymore...
I smile back at him and hike up my pack as Everett and I walk in. “Another day’s work done and done,” I say.
Hook nods and looks over the both of us. “Did you get the supplies?”
Everett rummages through his bag for a moment before pulling out the supplies. A couple grenades, tnt, a lighter, and a couple other explosives. He throws them to Hook. “Of course we got ‘em. We’re your best team, we would never let you down.” He says and I laugh my agreement.
We all walk into the parlor of the old abandoned house. It’s a creepy old Victorian house, like what are always seen in the movies. The stairs creak when we walk up them and the paint is peeling off the walls. Some of the floorboards are sticking up out of the floor and it took some getting used to, so I didn't trip over them every other step. The place isn't too bad once you have a couple dozen people living there.
When we walk in we are greeted by a couple jeers from the guys. Sometimes it gets a little weird, since I’m the only girl around that fights with everyone else. There is one other girl, Sadie, who cooks and helps dress the wounded. That is, if there’s anything left of them. No one really pays her any attention anyway; she’s really just the maid.
Everett and I walk over to a table in the corner of the room. When we walk over one of the guys slaps me on the äss. He stops chuckling though when Everett shoots him a death glare. I blush slightly and he quickly leads me over to the table with his arm around my shoulder.
“Don’t let those guys treat you like you’re a piece of meat, Riley.” Everett scolds me in a hushed whisper.
“Yes, dad.” I roll my eyes at him and sigh. “I can take care of myself, Everett, don’t worry about it.”
I watch him take out a neatly wrapped sandwich from his bag and he splits it in two, handing me half. “Of course you can, but you’re my partner in crime. I can’t let anything happen to you.”
I smile, taking a bite from the sandwich and thinking back to before. “Hey, remember when we weren’t partners? Just best friends? And even before that, just classmates in math class?”
Everett scrunches his nose. “Yeah I remember.” He chuckles. “I also remember when the only gun I shot was on Xbox. And the only zombies I shot were in that game too.”
I focused my eyes on the dusty wooden table. “Yeah I remember that too.” I say in a sullen voice.
Everett looks over and his face softened, his smile dropping slightly. “Hey, we’ve made it this far. All we have to do is destroy that reactor at the power plant and get to the lab where they are making the vaccines so we can cure everyone.”
I nod. There are so many people out there in the woods, walking as the undead. It’s frightening to think of, even more so to see. My family and so many others, but hopefully we’ll get to the vaccine before it happens to us as well. “I know, Everett, sometimes it just scares me to think about it all. To think that just a couple months ago our lives were just as normal as they always were, and now there’s all of this.”

Today was my school talent show.
Me, being myself - decided to sing "Skyscraper" by Demi Lovato. I did my thing, I sang. And, at the end - people were in tears and I got a standing ovation. I have never felt so good about myself. The dean went to take the microphone away, but I asked if I could say something to my peers. He allowed me. That's when my heart poured out.. "Thank you all, really. Now, I have something to say." After that, it became dead silent. "You're clapping for me now, right? Weren't half of you guys the people who said I was 'fat' yesterday? Yeah. Little do you know, I can't keep my food down because of those things you say. I can go days without eating. I hope you know that." Then, I had to stop because some girls were laughing. I walked up to them and pulled up my bracelets. "Hey, Bri. Look. Look at what YOU caused. Yes, YOU. You practically put these scars on my wrist. Because of people like you, people turn into people like me. Can I just ask why? Why do you do this to me and so many others?" Her answer was this; "Well, Nicole. I do it because people are losers, a lot like you." And at that, I had enough. What did I say? I said, "Bri, I'm done. I'm done with you. So is everyone else. YOU NEED TO STOP. I'm sick of you. If you don't stop soon, something WILL happen. It may happen to me. Or to you. Or to that girl over there. Just, STOP. Ok? Go on and try to tear me down, I will be rising from the ground. Like a skyscraper." I turned around and walked away. I wasn't finished though. I turned back around to face my peers and said, "I thought suicide was the answer. But, I KNOW it's not. Don't try it, guys. You hurt yourself, you hurt your family. And it hurts your friends. Please. Talk to me if you need anything." People clapped so loud, my ears were about to bust. But, WAIT. I'm not done yet... This really popular guy, Mike, came up to the front. He took the microphone and said, "Nicole.. Thank you for giving me the courage to do this." No one knew what was coming, but what he said shocked so many people. "Bri, we're through." I have never laughed harder in my life. Best day ever? I think YES.

    CHAPTER 33 x x x .
“I don’t have a boyfriend?” she said defensively. “Who told you that?”
    “Who do you think?”
“Kelli,” she rolled her eyes. “You just said it yourself—she’s jealous of me! She’s telling you guys I have a boyfriend so that you don’t talk to me!”
“She’s making it up? So for the past two weeks when we had her text you to hang out you said no because you had plans with no one?”
She denied it and I completely lost any patience I had left for her. “Brooke!” I yelled at her. “Stop playing stupid! It’s not cute, or believable, or anything! It’s aggravating as f.uck, you know exactly what I’m talking about. She texted you multiple times to hang out and you told her no because you were with him!”
The next thing I knew, Brooke’s phone was hurling towards me, hitting me straight in the chest. “Check my messages!” she yelled at me. “See if my boyfriend texted me! See if Kelli asked me to hang out! Check every single message—you’re not going to find anything!”
As soon as she said that, I had a pretty good idea that I was wrong. She wouldn’t have me check her messages if there was something there, because she knew I wouldn’t think she was bluffing and that I actually would check. The last text she got from Kelli was two weeks ago. She didn’t know that I knew about this ‘boyfriend’ so she wouldn’t have thought to delete the messages.
“I’m sorry,” I said quietly and handed the phone back.
“So that’s why you invited me here?” she scoffed. “To yell at me for ‘having a boyfriend and cheating on him with you?’ Sounds pretty f.ucking hypocritical if you ask me.”
She started to push past me but I couldn’t let her leave until this was all sorted out. “I invited you here to apologize, and try to convince you to not bother with me anymore.”
Her eyes widened and her face dropped. “Not bother with you? What do you mean?”
“Don’t hook up with me anymore. Do you know how guilty I feel looking at Kel and seeing how happy I make her when I know I’m cheating on her? Your ‘boyfriend’ would’ve been crushed if he knew about me. Graham already knows and he yelled at me for it and made you cry. Like, I really like you Brooke, but this isn’t going to work out. Not while I’m still dating Kel,” I tried to let her down easy.
“So I guess you’re going to have to pick one of us then.”
“I’m not doing that. I like both of you. I know you don’t understand how I could like Kelli, but you’re not there when it’s just me and her. That’s when I like her the most. But I can’t see you if I don’t see Kel. If I break up with her, you can’t hang out with me because I’m her ex-boyfriend. If you stop being friends with Kel, I can’t hang out with you because you’re my girlfriend’s ex-best friend. If we lose Kel, we lose each other.”

She's still devastated over the loss of her son, which was 15 years ago. He would've been 30 this year and honestly I feel so awful for the family. Anyways, her other son (Ian, who's 28 and the main character in 'Hold on to Him') came outside and he's so gorgeous and cute and we were talking and Linda goes "Christina, if you were a little older I'd set you two up to get married!" and Ian and I laughed it off but on the inside I was like "These people don't know I wrote an entire story about my fantasies with their son..."

    CHAPTER 30 x x x .
Kelli came back the next day and had been texting me all last night that she really missed me and wanted to see me. She told me Brooke also asked her to hang out but that she’d blow her off if I wanted her to.
“No, I don’t want you to blow her off. She’s your best friend, at least pretend like she is,” I told her on the phone as I drove to pick up Graham first out of all my friends.
“Cody, why are you being so mean to me??” Kelli whined. Oh my God, here we go again.
“I’m not being mean to you Kel, I’m just saying that you’ve always loved Brooke until you thought I did too. You have nothing to be jealous about,” I tried to say in a softer tone.
“Alright, good. It’s just that I feel like she’s always flirting with you, and I know her boyfriend has asked me before if Brooke—”
“Wait, wait, wait, what did you just say? Brookefriend? I mean—Brooke has a boyfriend?” I asked, trying not to let the emotion pour out of my voice.
“Yes,” she laughed. “She’s been dating him for almost a month now. She didn’t tell anyone at first just in case it didn’t last with him. But she’s been telling me how much she really loves him and how he loves her and I mean, a perfect girl like Brooke wasn’t going to stay single forever. I can’t believe she hasn’t mentioned him yet.”
“Yeah. Me either,” I said through my teeth. I pulled up in front of Graham’s house and beeped to let him know I was here. He came out almost immediately and into my car. “I got to go, babe. I’m picking up Graham now and then the rest of the guys. We’ll meet you at the pizza shop soon. I love you, Kelli.”
Graham rolled his eyes, “You definitely weren’t even talking to anyone. I know you’re getting with Brooke.”
“Why would you even think that?”
“Because I saw you guys through the window when we were coming back with the food last week. You’re lucky I didn’t say anything to the guys because the second they find out, so does Kelli.” He said it so calmly, but I knew he could ruin everything I had with Kelli.
“Well you don’t have to worry about that anymore,” I said. “Brooke has a boyfriend.”
“What??” he laughed. “And she’s cheating on him with you? You said it from the beginning, that girl’s a sl.ut, what are you doing with her?”
“I’m not going to get with her anymore. I can’t believe she’d do that to me,” I said.
“Cheat on the person she’s in a relationship with? Yeah, how could she?” he rolled his eyes.
“Shut up! Okay, Graham, I realize I’m a sh.itty boyfriend and I feel awful about it! I know I’m Kelli’s entire world and it doesn’t help that she treats me like I’m a f.ucking king because she doesn’t think I can do anything wrong! This will kill her, the same way it would kill Brooke’s boyfriend. He’s lucky enough to have a girl like her, and he thinks he’s the only one. It’s the same thing for Kelli, it just sucks that I didn’t realize that until now,” I said, pulling up to Carter’s house.
“Promise me you’re not going to get with her anymore,” Graham said. “Don’t do something you might regret.” I had a feeling I knew what he was referencing.
“Trust me, I won’t. It was a one-time thing, I was so f.ucking stupid to do it. Just don’t ever talk about this again,” I said right as Carter stepped out of his house. “It never happened.”

    CHAPTER 29 x x x .
Kelli agreed that she’d stop being so jealous, just like I expected her to. I hated being a d.ick to her, but sometimes she needed someone to put her in her place. I couldn’t believe that she actually admitted that she’d rather have me in her life, the guy she’s known for four months, than Brooke, her best friend that she’s known since fourth grade. That just gave me even more power over Kelli.
I turned around to go back to my group of friends and the first thing I noticed was that Brooke wasn’t there. “Where’d she go?” I asked.
“Of course you’d want to know,” Graham spat.
    “What?”
“Graham just sent her home crying,” Mattie said.
    “Why?” I yelled at Graham.
“Why don’t you go run after your girl and go get her?” Graham yelled back.
“My girl’s in Florida, Brooke is not my girl! Nothing is going on between me and Brooke and if you guys don’t stop with that stupid idea you’re going to end up ruining everything I have with Kelli!”
“You’re so full of sh.i.t! You’re in love with Brooke so what are you still doing with Kelli?? You always f.ucking b.itch about the fact that all girls think you’re a player but here you are, doing what you always do. I’m done trying to f.ucking help you!” Graham skated off.
“What did Graham yell at Brooke for?” I asked the guys.
    “No idea,” Carter said.
“You guys know that there’s nothing going on between me and Brooke, right?”
    No one answered.
