Chapter 4
The next day was awful. Instead of the usual first period classes, the entire school went to a memorial assembly on Sophia’s behalf. Nikki imagined that Sophia was next to her. Sophia would be crying and comforting everybody, crying about that poor girl who committed suicide. Or, maybe she would be rolling her eyes at all of her “accomplishments”. Nikki could practically hear Sophia whispering in her ear, “I don’t even remember doing that!” when they talked about her “excellent grades” and “beautiful artwork”. Nikki sighed. She glanced around the room. Some were paying attention, some were crying, some were sleeping, a few kids were doing who-knows-what in the dark. Though they obviously weren’t doing it now, many of the cheerleaders and their boyfriends had employed the do-it-in-the-dark technique. Nikki herself had done that once or twice, but frankly the whole thing seemed pretty sketchy. Nikki was amazed that she could think of such mundane things like assembly hookups while her best friend was in a funeral home.
The funeral happened the next day. People in Sophia’s class were allowed to skip school to attend. Nikki dressed in a daze before remembering that this wasn’t just a normal day, that she was supposed to wear black because of the funeral. Sophia’s funeral. She changed into black then walked downstairs.
