Why is she a strong girl?
    Because she walks around
    every day on the verge
    of tears, and you don't
    even have the slightest
    clue that she's not okay.

confused, don't know what they want, or on games. Everytime.

I don't know what the future holds.
    I don't know where I'll be ten years from now;
    A YEAR FROM NOW, EVEN.
What I do know is that
IF ALL I EVER HAD WAS THIS MOMENT,
    right here with you,
I would never want for anything more.

When you're a kid, they tell you it's all... grow up. Get a job. Get married. Get a house. Have a kid, and that's it. But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It's so much darker. And so much madder. And so much better.

23 Promises All Men Should Be Able To Make To Their Girlfriends
    1. I promise that when we binge watch shows on Netflix, I won’t skip ahead.
    2. Okay, I might skip ahead, but I’ll never spoil anything for you and I’ll act surprised at the good parts.
    3. I promise to keep my phone screen face up and without a password, because I don’t have anything to hide.
    4. I promise to show you off, whether it means bringing you around my friends & co-workers, or posting our pictures on Instagram.
    5. I promise to continue doing the things I did to win your heart, well after you’re mine.
    6. I promise I will never treat you like a cliche. I will never expect you to do anything just because you’re a “woman.” Those tropes are bullsh💩t anyway.
    7. I promise that every time we fight, I’ll order us make-up pizza.
    8. I promise I will remember your coffee order and, when you drink too much whiskey the night before, I’ll bring you your coffee bedside… even if I’m hungover, too.
    9. I promise we won’t fall into tired old routines and that I will look for new and interesting ways to keep our relationship fun.
    10. I promise I will fight for you and when I say I’m committed, you won’t have to worry about whether or not I mean it. I will make it important to earn and keep your trust.
    11. Marilyn Monroe was wrong but I promise I won’t stop caring about you when you’re at your worst and I’ll always work to bring out your best. Everybody needs to be cared for AND pushed.
    12. I will call when I say I’m going to call. I will ask you to let me know that you’ve gotten home safe. I will reply to your texts cause I’d want you to reply to mine. My phone game is strong.
    13. I promise to let the past be the past. I will not ask about your ex and I will not talk about mine unless you ask.
    14. I promise that even when you fall out with your friends I will not bad-mouth them, because we both know it’s probably temporary. They were here before me. Respect.
    15. I promise to spend enough time downtown if you know what I mean…
    16. I promise to treat our relationship like it’s our relationship, that it’s private, that it’s between you and I. I won’t let the world spoil it or dictate it. I’ll understand that it’s you and I together.
    17. I promise not to judge you for how long you take to say “stop” when I’m pouring your glass of wine.
    18. I promise I will order you a side of fries, not because I wouldn’t want to share my fries with you, but because I know you, girl, and those fries are what we came to this restaurant for.
    19. I promise I will not just tolerate your family, but I will make an effort to know your parents, your siblings, your cousins, because anyone that is important to you has to be amazing and I want to know them, too.
    20. Fried chicken. I will make it and you will eat and love it. Also vodka tonics because my vodka tonic game is strong. Nearly as strong as my phone game.
    21. I promise I will do everything I can to not be a “typical guy.” I’m as bored with those stereotypes as you are.
    22. I promise if you’re sick, I will go to that Italian restaurant you like and pick up some soup for you and I won’t even be annoyed when you tell me you feel awful a hundred times a day. I know you feel awful, I’ve been sick, too.
    23. I promise to like your Instagram photo when it’s at nine, and it looks all messy because you see NINE different usernames, and a tenth will make it say, simply, ’10 likes’ — because I know these little things matter.

Yesterday, I spent 60 dollars on groceries,
    took the bus home,
carried both bags with two good arms back to my studio apartment
    and cooked myself dinner.
You and I may have different definitions of a good day.
This week, I paid my rent and my credit card bill,
worked 60 hours between my two jobs,
only saw the sun on my cigarette breaks
    and slept like a rock.
    Flossed in the morning,
    locked my door,
    and remembered to buy eggs.
My mother is proud of me.
It is not the kind of pride she brags about at the golf course.
She doesn’t combat topics like, ”My daughter got into Yale”
with, ”Oh yeah, my daughter remembered to buy eggs”
    But she is proud.
See, she remembers what came before this.
The weeks where I forgot how to use my muscles,
how I would stay as silent as a thick fog for weeks.
She thought each phone call from an unknown number was the notice of my suicide.
    These were the bad days.
My life was a gift that I wanted to return.
My head was a house of leaking faucets and burnt-out lightbulbs.
    Depression, is a good lover.
So attentive; has this innate way of making everything about you.
And it is easy to forget that your bedroom is not the world,
That the dark shadows your pain casts is not mood-lighting.
It is easier to stay in this abusive relationship than fix the problems it has created.
Today, I slept in until 10,
    cleaned every dish I own,
    fought with the bank,
    took care of paperwork.
You and I might have different definitions of adulthood.
I don’t work for salary, I didn’t graduate from college,
but I don’t speak for others anymore,
and I don’t regret anything I can’t genuinely apologize for.
And my mother is proud of me.
I burned down a house of depression,
I painted over murals of greyscale,
and it was hard to rewrite my life into one I wanted to live
But today, I want to live.
I didn’t salivate over sharp knives,
or envy the boy who tossed himself off the Brooklyn bridge.
    I just cleaned my bathroom,
    did the laundry,
    called my brother.
Told him, “it was a good day.”

Do you think that in a couple years we'll make it into the back of history books marked down as the generation that fell apart,
we're all lost, looking for a way home, forgetting that we can build a house out of our own bones but we keep searching for
a lover who'll take us by the hand and give us something to think about in the afternoon when we're stuck in our busy lives
thinking about nothing, you'd think falling down and scraping you knee would hurt most as a child but as we grow up we learn
about the death of a parent and how it feels when your mother is now lying underground and your father threw sand onto her
grave burying her with the rest of the town unlike before how he used to shower her in love and flowers but now the only
flowers she recieves are three days old from people who forgot to come earlier. Do you think they'll hold seminars and
confrences talking about how we were the generation that fu/ked up everything good in the world, how we thought smoking
cigarettes when we were ten years old would make everything all right but were just polluting our bodies and the plants that
we should love, how we're cutting down trees and making paper and books that use 26 letters in the alphabet in millions of
ways; ways that make us want to tear it out, do you think they'll put us on the cover of New York Times and cal us the wasted
youth and romanticize death so we're no longer afraid to die. So they'll kill this generation, taking us down. They'll put us in the
back of history books and tell the next generation not to fu/k up like us. There is nothing pretty about us, we are ugly, we have
scars running along our bodies, unlike those who hide it inside, we want to share it to the world and tell others that hurting yourself
is damn pretty. We aren't pretty, never were and never will be. They'll put us in the back of history books for damn sure, reminding
those that we were the ugliest of them all.

If I were being followed into a dark alley or something, and I was alone and defenseless....I would sit down in the middle of the alley with my legs crossed, and I'd start rocking back and fourth and sing a nursery rhyme like Ring-around-the-rosy, or Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater in the creepiest voice I could muster...doing my best to seem deranged. Why would I do this, you ask? Because nobody wants to mess with a crazy person xD

Your smile reminds me of a Christmas ornament, rarely seen and sometimes hidden but stunningly there when one takes the time to search for it. Your gestures remind me of railroad cars, an endless and always moving string whistling by, reaching to dip into the sunset and skim the horizon. Your gaze reminds me of a filthy dollar bill I found in July, fluttering across the hot cement, begging me to pick it up and dust it off. Your demeanor reminds me of ice. Ice doesn’t cry. Ice doesn’t shake. But it does, when it warms up to you, melt. Your voice reminds me of the time I tried to inhale some variation of lead (it has that busted and rusted sound, like you’ve spent too much time swallowing pennies) and ended up puking whatever pride I had left in me. Your fingers remind me too much of the days where I drew stick figures in the margins of my notebook out of extreme boredom before adding a tree and slowly hanging them all. Give someone a noose and they’ll be highly insulted, give them a pencil and paper and they might thank you (to me they might as well be the same thing).

    Before you say yes,
get him angry. See him scared, see him wanting, see him sick. Stress changes a person. Find out if he drinks and if he does, get him drunk — you'll learn more about his sober thoughts. Discover his addictions. See if he puts you in front of them. You can't change people, baby girl. If they are made one way, it doesn't just wear off. If you hate how he acts when he's out of it now, you're going to hate it much worse eight years down the road. You might love him to bits but it doesn't change that some people just don't fit.
