Ethan kept his promise. Right after feeding the chickens, he drove
Charlotte into town in his old crappy Honda.
Charlotte stared at him from the corner of her eye as they drove down the dirt
road. Ethan was...dark. And mysterious. He seemed like the bad boy-rebel type.
    He sure had the look.
Charlotte grew uneasy as they neared Blake's Cafe. What if she didn't get the
job? Then she'd be stuck in that hell hole back home.
The car came to a stop. Charlotte reached to open her door when Ethan called,
"Wait!" She froze in confusion as he hopped out of the car, and skidded to a stop
next to her door, pulling it open for her. She blushed, and laughed.
"What?!" he demanded. "It's southern hospitality," he said, and winked.
She rolled her eyes, and got out of the car. He held the door to the cafe open for her too.
The smell of expresso coffee filled
her nose, and she inhaled deeply, missing home.
"And this, is Blake's Cafe!" he announced in an enthusiastic voice. "Now let's go meet him, the founder of this amazingly amazing place! And we're off!!" he grabbed her hand, and they ran behind the counter through a door. She was in hysterical fits of laughter, until she realized there was a man, probably about 20 sitting behind a desk in the small room,
    reading a book.
"Hey Blake. I'd like you to meet my girl, Charlotte," Ethan said, slinging an arm around Charlotte's shoulder. "She was wonderin' about getting a job here. What do you think?" he asked.
"Yeah, sure. I don't care," he said, and waved his hand, dismissing the conversation,
without even looking up from his book. Just like that? Didn't he want to see if she could even actually make coffee?
"Cool. Thanks man," Ethan said, and pulled her out back into the shop. "See. I knew he wouldn't care. Blake's a pretty layed back guy."
    ~
Ethan showed her the basics of coffee making, but she was already pretty clear on
    how to make coffee.
She was a New Yorker, afterall.

Ethan caught Charlotte staring at him, and grinned back at her. She blushed
violently, and turned away from him.
Great, he's probably thinking I'm a wierdo now, she thought. Oh well.
"Ethan, take Charlotte to the stalls. Show her how to muck them," John said, and smiled deviously. He knew Charlotte would just love to learn how to muck the horse stalls. Ethan nodded, and motioned for Charlotte to follow him, and she did.
When they were out of ear shot, Charlotte asked, "What exactly do you do when you muck a stall...?" Ethan chuckled.
"You really are a city girl, aren't you?" he said. She playfully smacked his arm.
"Don't make fun of me," she replied smiling.
Ethan raked a hand through his blond hair, "Well, you kind of set yourself up for it," he said innocently. She just rolled her eyes.
    ~
When Ethan showed her what mucking was, she was disgusted. But she
had to learn, so she did it. Even if it was nasty. When they finished, Charlotte tooka step back to admire her work.
"Perfect," she said sarcastically, "I'm going to get a job at that coffee shop in town.
There's no way I'm going to be stuck doing this every day."
"I work there," he said, much to Charlotte's suprise.
    "Yeah?"
"Yeah," he said matter of factly, smiling that cute crooked grin of his. She
studdied his face, trying to read him, and was frustrated when she found she
couldn't. She was usually good at that kind of stuff.
"It's rude to stare," Ethan said suddenly. Charlotte didn't realize she
was still looking at him. She scolded herself, and turned away.
"Charlotte, if you want, after work, I'll take you into town. You can fill out an
application for the coffee shop," he said.
It took her a moment to answer.
"I would like that," she finally said.

After that incident in the kitchen, Charlotte hastily went back to the dining room, and sat down. Ryan took his place next to her. A moment later, she felt his hand running up and down her thigh. She glanced over at him incrediously, but he wasn't even looking at her. She swatted his hand away, and tried to eat the rest of her lamb, but was feeling sick to her stomach.
    ~
When dinner was over, Joyce made Charlotte say good bye. Without a word, she hugged Ryan, just to please her mom. When she tried to pull away, he held her there and whispered, "I'll make sure I see you again, sweatheart."
Charlotte recoiled from him, and he grinned back at her. It wasn't a cute grin though. It was...creepy. Charlotte didn't want anything to do with Ryan. How would she tell her mother that?
"Hey, Char!?" John called to her, interupting her thoughts, "Tomorrow, you're gonna be up at 6. I'm going to show you how to work on a farm. You can get another job if you'd like, so you wouldn't have to spend your entire day on the farm...but for now, you are," he said.
Charlotte was too tired to argue, so she just nodded, and trudged up the stairs to her room.
    ~
The next morning, John had woken her up right at 6, just as he's promised. By 6:30, she decended down the long flight of stairs, wearing an old pair of jeans, with a big hole in the knee, and a huge sweatshirt.
"Here," John thrusted a pair of muckers at her, "You'll need these." She reluctantly took them, and pulled them over her tiny feet. They were hard to walk in.
They reached the barn, and walked inside. The smell hit her face instantly, and she gagged. "That baby, is a smell you're gonna just have to get used to, working here on a farm,"John said. "Now come here, and meet everyone." She looked up, and realized there were other people in the barn with them.
"This is George," John said pointing to an older man, who was wearing a cowboys hat over his bald head. "This is Martha, Georges wife," he pointed to a little old woman with pure white hair. "Ah, and this here is Ethan," he pointed to a young boy, Charlottes age. He was taller than her by atleast 5 inches. He had shaggy blonde hair, and was wearing leather, along with a cowboy hat.
I hope Ethan isn't like Ryan, Charlotte thought.

Charlotte scampered up the stairs to her room. She searched her closet for a dress, and found a cute floral V neck dress. She got dressed, and pulled her long wavy hair into a neat bun on the top of her head. She swiped in some lip gloss, and hurried down stairs.
"Charlotte! Come set the table!" Joyce said.
Charlotte grabbed 6 ceramic plates, and placed them neatly on the dining room table, along with 6 steak knives, and forks. They were having lamb. Just as Charlotte finished setting the table, the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it!" called John, and she watched as he pull the door open. There stood a man, about the same age as John, and a woman with blonde-gray streaked hair. Next to her, was a boy, about the same age as Charlotte. He was tall, with dark brown, short hair. He had an angular jaw, and Charlotte had always thought that was sexy on a guy. He's cute, she decided.
"Oh, please come in, come in!" Joyce ushered them in, and they took their seats. After everyone was settled, Charlotte realized the only open seat left was next to Ryan.
My mother planned that, she thought, but smiled at Ryan as she reluctantly sat down next to him.
Dinner was awkward. Only for Charlotte though. While the adults conversed, she could feel Ryan's eyes on her, and that made her feel exposed. She exused herself, and went to the kitchen for a glass of water. She didn't realize Ryan had followed her until she felt his hands slide around her waist, and roughly pull her towards him.
"Let me go," she ordered. He chuckled.
"What, you don't like me? You're mother won't be too happy about that," he whispered, as he kissed her neck. What was she supposed to say to that?
"No, I don't like you," she told him, and tried to pull away, but he held her there tighter. His hands moved freely over her body, and she just stood there. He kissed her neck, and slowly moved up her jaw, to her cheek...
"I see we're getting awfully friendly here," Joyce said as she entered the kitchen. Charlotte jumped, and Ryan pulled back a little, but Joyce was happy with what they were doing.
He knew she wanted him and Charlotte together.

Charlotte stared out the window, as they approached what appeared to be a small town.
This must be it, she thought sadly. It was an old town. It sure looked old, anyway. It looked like what all the southern towns looked like in the movies. The kind of town that was so small, everybody knew everybody. There were no secrets. There was no privacy. At all.
There were small brick buildings, all close together. Most of them were little stores, and thriftshops. Almost every building has ivy growing on it, but Charlotte thought that made them look pretty. There were flower pots hanging off of ever old lamp post, and she thought that they made the town more...inviting.
Outside of one store called "Billy's shop," were a couple, laughing hand in hand. Charlotte thought they looked happy. The passed a place called "The Waffle House."
"We're going to be there almost every morning for breakfast," chuckled John. Charlotte groaned. She wasn't a big fan of waffles like her dad was.
"Thanks, but no thanks," she said, "I'd rather eat stale cereal." They drove further, and passed a few more cute little shops. On the corner of one street was a diner that was just called, "The Diner." Very original. They passed a small, but homey looking coffee shop called Blake's Cafe, and Charlotte knew she'd be spending most of her time there. It would remind her of home. There was a Starbucks on every street corner in New York. New Yorkers were coffee finatics. She hoped she could get a job there.
After that, they passed a huge white church it the center of the town. Charlotte knew she'd be forced to go there every Sunday. Great.
They drove a little further until they reached a giant house, much too big for a family of just three.
"We're here!" Joyce, Charlottes mom announced cheerfully. Charlotte stepped out of the air conditioned car, into the humid sticky June air, and gazed up at the house. It was pained a light blue, like the sky. The paint was chipping, and it needed re-done desperatley. There was a porth, with a porch swing attached to the ceiling. Charlotte liked that.
There was a giant oak tree next to a window, that she was about claim. She hastily grabbed her bags, and ran up the porch steps into the house. She ran upsairs to the bedroom on the far left, and sure enough, that was the room. She opened the window, and inspected the tree. It was perfect for sitting. She looked down, and noticed a tire swing. She smiled to herself. She had always wanted one, but couldn't since the only trees, and grass in New York, were in Central Park.
    ~
Charlotte and her family got settled in quick. They unpacked in just 3 days. That night, Joyce announced she had invited the mayor and his son and wife to dinner at their house. She worked for him as his assistent, so she thought it'd be nice to have the Hoult family over, just to get to know them.
"I hope you like Ryan. The mayor's son. He'd be good for you," Joyce said to Charlotte. "Now go make yourself pretty for him," she said, and Charlotte did as she was told.

Charlotte pushed a strand of her long brunette hair away from her fce, and glanced out the window. The sun was sinking slowly, and vibrant oranges and pinks laced the evening sky. She looked at her phone, and it read 8:43.
That's how you know it's summer, she thought, it doesn't get dark until late. Summer was her favorite season, besides fall. There was nothing she loved more than the seasonal pumpkin spice coffee from Starbucks.
Her ipod was still playing, and she sang along softly. "Tonight will be the night that I will fall for you, over again..." Charlotte loved that song. It reminded her of her ex boyfriend, Jace. She pushed the thought of him away. It hurt to think about him...
Back in New York, they had sung in the sophmore chior together at her school. Charlotte loved singing, and hoped her new school had some kind of chorus group. Not that it mattered right now, since it just the beggining of summer.
She shuddered at the thought of having to go to school with a bunch of rednecks she didn't even know. It would be horrible. She was sure.
The farther they drove, the more sad she became. Finally, she couldn't hold it in anymore, and let the tears fall silently down her face, praying her parents look back her. She didn't want them to think she was weak. They'd probably laugh.
Charlotte scrunched herself into a litttle ball, and pulled a purple blaket her nana had made her, over herself. Ipod turned all the way up, that's how she fell asleep.
    ~
Charlotte awoke to sunlight pouring through the window. At first, she didn't remember where she was, but it quickly came back to her. Tennessee. Her stomach twisted, and she suddenly felt sick. They were almost there.
She stared out the window, and saw farms with cattle and horses. Sometimes someone would be riding a horse. She thought it looked like fun, and Charlotte found herself wanting to ride one too. She dismissed the thought quickly when she remembered how badly she wanted to be back in New York Walking down the street window shopping with Lauren. That's what they did every summer right after school ends.
The thought made Charlotte want to burst into tears.

"I can't believe this," Charlotte muttered from the back seat of the car. Her dad glared at her through the review mirror, and she knew he had heard her. She pretended not to notice. Her and her family were driving from New York City, to a small town called Springfeild, in Tennessee. All because her mother lost her job, and now they have to move. On the first day of summer. All of Charlottes summer plans, ruined.
Charlotte began to think of all the friends she was leaving behind, and had to swallow back tears. It was all so unfair. Her best friend, Lauren was devastated.
"Promise to come back for the holidays," Lauren had said with tears in her eyes. Charlotte promised she would, so long as Lauren kept her updated on everything she was missing while she was gone.
Charlotte hated her parents, and was dreading living in Tennessee with them. Atleast in New York, she was almost never home, so she never had to be around them. Now, they'd be living in an old plantation, right next to a farm, that she would most likley be forced to work on. Great.
"A city girl will never fit in in the country," she had argued with her parents. They didn't care about anyone but themselves, so it was pretty much useless to argue. If they said they were moving to Tennessee, then they would move to Tennessee. Charlotte never got a say in anything. She just hoped they'd let her pick her own room. She'd pick the one the farthest away from them.
Charlotte sighed, and put in her earphones, trying to block out the world around her. She was unsuccessful. She felt a pang of sadness, as she read the sign, "You are now leaving New York City!" She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes, threatening to spill over, as she watched New York fade into a big blob in the distance.
What am I supposed to do? she thought. She couldn't really do anything though.
Except be miserable, but she wouldn't give her parents that satisfaction.

When Charlotte moves from The Big Apple after her mom loses her job, to a small town in Tenessee, she absolutley hates it. She feels out of place, and wants nothing more than to just go home. Until she meets a boy named Ethan. Her parents hate the idea of Ethan all together. They don't want Charlotte around him, and will do anything to keep them apart. They think Ethan is nothing but trouble, and is bad for their little girl. On the other hand, they do want her to be with the mayors son, Ryan Hoult, because he's,"Sweet, mature, smart, and rich." Or so they think. Charlotte couldn't disagree more.
