my life in letters ... sort-of [part 7:]
Jacob eyed Eric like a lion eyeing a gazelle, or would that be a zebra? I don't know, but lion's eat both. Eric smiled at me and it sent a shock wave through my body. What was going on? I felt dizzy so I sat down on the ground.
"Mel?" it was Jacob, I recognized his voice.
"What?"
"What are you doing?" What does it look like I'm doing? I'm reconnecting.
"Sitting, and you?"
"That's not what I meant, why are you talking to him?" He pointed to Eric, who looked down at his hands.
"You said he had no significance in my life, so I'm making a new friend." I lied, I wanted to know what significance Eric did have in my past life, whether it was good or bad.
"But he hurt you ..." His voice trailed off, "Look Mel, I'm just looking out for--." Eric cut him off, "Shut up Jacob, you're just jealous that she's in to me again and not you." Jacob stared at Eric for a long moment before answering, "No, Eric, I don't care if she's in to you. I don't care if she likes you. She loves me. She's my best friend, and you're nothing to her. You will always be nothing. You always were nothing." I was so confused.
"Guys, stop fighting, you're acting like kids. Can someone please tell me what's going on?" Jacob spoke first, "Maybe he should explain, I hate telling the story." Eric smiled and glared at Jacob, "Okay, long story short: You and Jacob were dating. You fell for me, broke up with him for me. He got jealous. We broke up. You guys became best friends. And I love you. The end."
"You left out the part where you completely destroyed her." Jacob's hands were clenched into fists, I didn't say anything about it, I let him have his anger.
"I didn't destroy her, I left her so it wouldn't hurt in the long run."
"And what about now? Does it change that she doesn't remember what you did to her?"
"No."
"Then why try and break her again? I won't let you hurt her." I stood up and tried to be brave, "Stop. Both of you. Jacob, take a breath ... please, you look like you're about to pop a vein in your head. Eric, stop angering him. Can't we just settle this nicely?"
"No Mel, we can't." Eric snapped back at me, Jacob's hands were still in fists.
I slowly made my way to where Jacob was standing and took his hands in mine, they were hot as fire, he winced when I touched him, "please ... calm down." I begged him, "please ..." His eyes locked on mine and his pupil's dilated. He took a deep breath and looked down to the ground, "you're my best friend Mel, and I don't want to see you like that again." I put my hand on his cheek, "I'm fine, okay? I'm completely fine." He put his hand on mine and took it off his face, "Do you remember who hit you? Your car I mean. Do you remember the accident?"
"Yeah, some drunk guy hit us, but he was underage so they didn't charge him for some stupid reason. It was dumb."
"Did you see the guy?"
"No."
"It was Eric. He did it. He almost killed you." Horror filled his face as my hands cupped my mouth in shock.
I didn't want to believe it.
