I have very few friends irl but I have reached a point in my self love journey where I can zip up my dress by myself, comfortably eat alone in public, and make myself laugh until my stomach hurts. At this point I welcome anyone to love me but I don’t need them to.

The first time I said his name,
It sounded like crushed glass.
I couldn’t quite make it roll off my tongue,
So in stumbling pieces it went.
The next few times I said his name, he helped.
We’d practice and practice,
Drawing it out in sharp syllables and silent consonants.
He knew we were making progress, gluing the glass together,
Bit by bit.
Bit by bit.
Over time, I got better and better at his name.
He spent less time teaching me it,
Less time telling me how he loved me saying it.
I still practiced in front of the mirror though, sometimes;
Because someday, I’d be able to say it perfectly.
And eventually,
I could say it perfectly,
Not a chip in the glass.
Maybe,
It was all the practice,
Whispering his name over and over into my knees on the night that he’d left me,

Why is the term “friend zone” so popular when the term “unrequited love” already exists and is more accurate?
I suspect it’s because it shifts the locus of responsibility. “Unrequited love” focuses on the person who has the crush. The feelings being discussed are the crushing person’s, thus the responsibility in on them to get over their crush and move on. “Friend zone”, on the other hand, focuses on the crush object’s choices. The phrase erases the agency of the crushing person. All blame for their pain is put on the crush object. “Unrequited love” is something that can happen to both sexes, but “friend zone” is a sexist concept that implies that women are solely responsible for men’s happiness, and not men themselves.

I change with the seasons.
I may be bright, balmy like the eternally sunshine-warmed days of summer.
I may be sugary sweet like spring, pink and rich with new life and smelling of all the foliage that will be soon to blossom.
I may use ice to viscously rip your skin into confetti, or simply wither and die like all that occurs during wintertime.
Or maybe I will cry heavy rainstorms like autumn, and attempt to kill all that dares to live in my wilting presence.
