    Just A Kiss.
    Chapter Four
By the time I got back to the dining room, my mother was already standing in the doorway with her arms crossed.
"You're late for piano lessons. Go. Now," she said sternly.
"Yes, ma'am," I mummbled, and started to the music room, but she stopped me.
"Oh, by the way Maria. I saw you out in the garden with that boy. Please dear, I want you to stay away from him. He's...you know. Third class," she said the last 2 words like they were dirty.
Image meant everything to mother, and she couldn't have her perfect little daughter be seen even talking a person of a lower class. God, she made me sick.
"Alright, I will," I said, even though I knew right then and there that I had just lied right through my teeth.
    Oh well.
    ~
I hated playing instruments. Not just the piano, any kind. I wasn't any good. I could sing though. I loved to sing. I told this to my music teacher. Ms. Moore was a nice lady in her late twenties who also loved to sing. Sometimes she'd play the piano, and I'd sing along or she'd sing, and I'd play. It's safe to say we have become pretty close friends the past 2 years.
Today was different though, and we devoted our whole 2 hours just to piano playing. I was falling behind, and we both knew it, so she convinced me just to take this class to practice, just to make mother happy.
When we were done, I decided to go back outside to the garden. Mother wasn't home, probably out to lunch with a work friend or something, so she wouldn't catch me.
Ethan grinned widely as I approached the garden.
"Well well," he said sarcastically, putting down his shears, "Look who we have here!!"
"Shut up," I said, lightly punching his arm as I sat down on the stone bench next to the rose bushes.
"Mmm, Maria, I don't think it's a good idea for you to come here anymore...your mother came to talk to me earlier, and-"
    "She what!?" I exclaimed.
"She told me to stay away from you," he finished, and ran a hand through his dark hair.
"Unbelievable," I said, and layed down on the bench.
"Not that I want you to, but your not gonna leave?" Ethan asked.
    "Nope."
    "Well alright then."
    ~
I can't tell you how long Ethan and I sat in the garden, talking. About everything. Sometimes we'd just stop talking, and listen to the fountain in the center of the massive garden, or maybe the birds singing in the trees. Minutes turned hours, and too soon, the sun starting sinking below the trees. Finally, I stood up.
"I have to go," I told him. He nodded, and walked over to me, swiftly kissing me on the cheek, and i violently blushed.
    "Good night Maria."
    "Good night Ethan."

    Just A Kiss.
    Chapter Three
A wide grin spread across his face as he stared at me through my huge glass window. I couldn't look away. His eyes were the most beautiful shade of green I've ever seen. I could feel my cheeks turning to fire the longer he stared, and I hoped he couldn't tell. Then, he finally looked away, and went back to pulling weeds. He still smiled that same foolish grin he had before, and I couldn't help but wonder what he was so amused about.
I should probably just sleep on it.
With a sigh, I shut off the light, and climbed into my king size bed. I fell asleep still thinking about the boys captivating green eyes.
    ~
I woke to golden natural light pouring through my window, and was instantly suprised. I usually awoke right at sunrise, but the sun was already just above the trees. I glanced over at my alarm clock. 10:56. Wow. I never liked to sleep in late. It made me feel like I was wasting the day.
I climbed out of bed, and got in the shower. As soon as I stepped into the warm running water, my body completley relaxed. I shivered as the warm water ran down my exposed body, causing goose bumps on my arms and legs. I did my little routine, and quickly got out. I wrapped a large towel around my body, and a smaller one around my hair.
What to wear, what to wear...
I wished I could just put on a T-shirt and jeans, but I knew I couldn't, so I decided on a floral skirt from Hollister with a matching tank top. I let my wavy hair air dry while I added the small amount of makeup I ususally wear to my face. When I was done, I bounded down the stairs into the kitchen for breakfast. The smell of waffles filled my nose, and my stomach grumbled greedily. I ate my breakfast rather fast, and decided to escape to the garden before my mother could drag me to piano lessons.
As I walked up the stone path to the garden, I saw the boy, and smiled to myself. I was hoping he'd be here. He must've heard me coming, because he stopped watering the tulips, and looked up at me.
"Well, good morning beautiful. To what do I owe the pleasure?" he asked. I laughed at him.
    "What pleasure?" I asked sarcastically.
"Well, you of course." I laughed again.
"Are you laughing at me?" he asked. I shook my head.
"Oh, no. Of course not," I replied. He smiled.
"Good. I'm Ethan, by the way," he said, and held out his hand. I shook his hand and said, "Nice to meet you Ethan. I'm Maria."
"Maria," he hummed, "What a beautiful name," he said, and kissed my hand, very gentleman like. I stifled another laugh. I studied his face for a minute, trying to figure out what was wrong with him. Surely, there had to be some kind of imperfection. Or not. He seemed perfect. He wasn't until then I realized he was still holding my hand, so I pulled away, slightly embarrassed. He cleared his thoat.
"Well, Maria. It was nice meeting you. I hope I get to see you around," he said.
"So do I," I replied, and was suprised at how much I actuallly meant that.

    Just A Kiss.
    Chapter Two
I whirled around to find Ryan, standing about 2 inches from my face. I gasped in suprise, and quickly ducked underneath his arm, trying to put some distance between us. I didn't like it when people stood so close to me. It made me claustrophobic.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to startle you," he said.
"Uhm, it's-it's okay," I stuttered. For some reason, this guy made me nervous.
"You know what they want, right? Why they even asked me to come along?" he asked. Confused, I shook my head.
    "What are you talking about?"
"Well, they want us together. Think about it, my family is rich, so is yours. We're perfect for eachother. Plus, you're hot," he said, and moved closer to me.
"We should probably go back-" I started to say, but he interrrupted me, by forcing a kiss on my mouth. I squirmed underneath him, but he wouldn't move, so I went still underneath him. Then, he finally pulled away.
    "You done?" I asked.
He smirked. "Well, for no-" he started, but didn't get to finish because I brought my hand up, and slapped him hard across the face. I know it wasn't very lady like, and mother would disaprove, but I couldn't just let him disrespect me like that. So, I did what any woman would've done.
I watched as he rubbed his reddening cheek, and muttered a few choice words at me.
"A little fiesty I see? That's okay sweetie, we can work on that," he smiled warmly, which seemed very innopropriate. I left then, but made sure I threw a dirty look in his direction before I did.
I sat back down at my spot at the table, and finished the last bit of my lamb chop. About 15 minutes later, the Sullivans finally left. But not before my mother insisted on them coming over for dinner again sometime soon, and they agreed.
    Great.
After they were gone, my mother claimed she had a migraine, and exused herself to her room. I helped the maids clean up the table a little, because I didn't like the idea of having a maid anyway. When I was done, I make a break for my room. Once inside, I shut the door, changed into PJ's, and grabbed my notebook. I went to my favorite spot in the room, a little sitting area on the edge of the window, and stared out at the slowly setting sun. The sky was laced with pinks, and purples.
I often found myself falling asleep there, watching the stars shine.
I sat upright when I saw a small movement in the garden. I squinted my eyes, and saw a boy with jet black hair, and tanned skin from working under the sun all day. I watched as he pulled weeds, and trimmed the bushes. My mother must've hired him because she was too lazy to go out there and do it herself. The garden was my favorite place here, so I spent a lot of time there taking care of the garden myself. Not that she would notice.
I watched the boy for awhile, and suddenly he looked up, locking gazes with me.

    Just A Kiss.
    Chapter One
"Maria, get dressed for dinner!! The guests are expected at 5:30, and you better be down here by then, or there's going to be a problem!!" my mother called from downstairs. I let out a sharp breath, and answered, "Alright!!" trying to hide the annoyance from my voice.
I know it sounds rude, but I hate having guests over. My mother is going to be on my case all night. Atleast more than she already is. I can hear her disprovement already: "Get your elbows off the table. Stop tapping your fingers. Don't play with your hair."
I closed my notebook, capped my Sharpie, and made my way to my enormous walk-in closet. I skimmed my fingers along the rows and rows of all the dresses my mom had bought me over the years. I hated every single one. I stopped at a simple white sundress I wore only one time since I had it, and pulled it off the hanger.
I shrugged out of the designer clothes I was wearing, and wiggled the dress up over my hips. I gathered my light blonde wavy hair into a low elegant bun, securing it with bobby bins. I touched up my make-up a bit, swiping some clear lip gloss onto my already rosy lips. I took one last glance at myself in the mirror before I left, looking for any imperfections my mother would just have to point out. I didn't see anything wrong, but surely she would.
The doorbell rang just as I was hurrying down the marble staircase. My mother was already at the door, pulling it open, and forcing a fake smile to greet our guests.
I didn't know who they were. A tall man with greyish hair, stood next to a petite woman, also with streaks of grey in her once fully auburn hair. They both smiled so widley, I was sure thier mouths would be sore later. My mother motioned for them to come in, and take a seat in the dining room. I almost didn't notice the boy who came in right after them. He looked about my age, and incredibly wealthy. He had the same auburn hair as his mom, and blue eyes. You could say he was handsome.
There were 6 chairs in all at the dining room table. My father sat at one end, my mother at the other, leaving 2 chairs on either side of the table. The man and woman took a seat next to eachother, and I didn't realize until we had to sit down, that the only seat left was the one next to the boy. I took my place next him, and he gave me a warm smile. I returned it.
"Maria, I'd like to introduce you to my boss, Mr. Sullivan, his wife, Mrs. Sullivan, and thier handsome son, Ryan Sullivan," My mother said, guesturing to each one as she spoke.
"It's nice to meet you all," I replied as politley as I could.
For the rest of dinner, the adults mostly just talked about things I tried my best to tune out. I focused mostly on the chandilier above our heads, admiring the way it cast rainbows across the ceiling. Every now and then, I'd catch Ryan stealing glances at me. To be honest, that made me a little uncomfortable.
Hadn't anyone ever taught him staring was rude?
Eventually, when the adults were deep in conversation, I exused myself to the kitchen for a glass of water that I didn't really need. My mother just waved me off.
I didn't even notice Ryan had followed me until I felt his hot breath down my neck, and his hands snake around my waist.

    Just A Kiss.
    Prolouge
We all know what love is like. What love is. It's risky. It can be complicated. But it's...magical.
It's what makes your stomach twist into butterflys. It's beautiful to no end, absolutley and completley wonderful.
However, when love is between two people who aren't even supposed to talk to eachother, it gets complicated.
    ~
My name is Maria Whitman. I'm 16 years old. My family is a first class family, which seems to be a big deal. I don't think it's that great. Yes, we have money.
We live better than most people. But I see what money has done to my family. My sister Ember, who used to be sweet and thankful, has turned into the most ungrateful 15 year old I know.
My parents, it's gone to thier heads too.
My mother is a pain. All she cares about are looks, and money. I'm home schooled, because public schools "aren't for me." Even now in the summer, I still have to take certain classes. I have to be a piano perfessionist by the end of the summer.
I can only hang out with people she approves. I can only date people she approves. I can't do anything without being watched, or judged. I'm supposed to act like a "lady." God forbid I wear something other than a designer skirt...
I know what your thinking. "Poor little rich girl."
Maybe you're right. Maybe I should be thankful for what I have. But I'm not. I'd trade lives with you in a heartbeat. All I want is a normal life. I want to have friends. I want to go out, wearing jeans. I want to fall in love.
With whoever I want to fall in love with.
    But I can't. It's forbidden.
