So today I uploaded my art class self portrait and a complete stranger started commenting on all my work. He called my portrait a failure in two comments on two different pieces. so here's what went down

Indeed, anything can be art. Most important part of improving is knowing when and how you've failed. Godspeed on your journey to becoming a better artist.
I wouldn't say any work of art can be a failure. Every piece of work has it's artist persnal touches mixed in. Even a child's scribled drawing of a tree. While this is a high school art class piece of work, I worked very hard on it and I'm glad to say I created it, even if it isn't my best piece. However, in my personal opinion, I think that the next time you are critiquing a complete stranger's art work without the slightest touch of sensitivity you should NEVER use any form of the word "failure", because all the people here work very hard and would never want to be called a failure, espesially through their art. And, as I said, anything can be art.
Why? Because I might hurt their feelings? A work's quality is based around one thing: the creativity and skill of the piece. Someone could spend years of their life making something that still sucks. Art only improves by recognizing what's good about a piece - something that is utterly cheapened by giving people congratulations regardless of their success or failure.
Children need consistent praise and encouragement - adults need honesty.
Also, lots of people here don't put ANY time into their work, and it's immediately obvious.
I'm not saying that unskilled work evident of no effort should be praised or the artist should be congradulated. What I mean is that no work is ever a failure, regardless of how hard the artist worked, or how long it took, or even who did it. If a man you'd never met put endless time into a piece of artwork and you shot it down and told him it was a failure, his heart would shattered. Where as, if you told him the piece's strongest points and weakest points, he would thank you for your time and return to working on it. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." An artist can always be told where they lack in skill and where they need improvement, but as an artist, being told your art is a failure is like being sincerely told your parents are disappointed in you. It's a matter of know where to draw the line, because there is a fine line between being a critic and being rude.
