she was made of fire.
i want to tell you about a girl
she was made of fire. red hair and all.
she was laughter at all the wrong times. a cigarette at sixteen and vodka in a water bottle.
she was that feeling you get when you sneak out at night, right between fear and excitement.
she was the troubled child that taught the preachers kid about god. turning water holes into whirlpools just so we could feel the current of the ocean in our backyard. she was dipping pizza in ranch dressing. opening little boys eyes the world outside of using things for only one reason.
she was my stepdads daughter.
she was my sister.
but i’ve never been to her grave.
i’ve never put flowers beside the headstone that i’ve never seen. and i’ve never knelt on the ground above the bed where she’ll always sleep at sixteen.
sometimes i wonder if it’s because I’m a bad sister.
sometimes i wonder if it’s because id rather forget than remember. but i remember.
i remember the time she spent the night and couldn’t sleep because of the hallway light.
i remember putting a skirt on to impress her handsome friend. I still have it.
i remember a rebel. she didn’t worry about breaking rules, she played by her own.
i remember walking into the living room. grandma on the phone, aunt susan on the couch. kylie. car crash. she’s..
flying. she’s smiling. she’s the only one not wondering why I’m not crying.
i thought maybe it was shock. or maybe i still thought people were immortal. Maybe ten year olds shouldn’t think that way, but i still believed in superpowers. peter parker didn’t become Spiderman until high school, i had a couple more years. maybe i’d get bitten by a radioactive clock and gain the ability to control time. I’m fifteen now and i’ve poked every clock i can find.
still nothing.
i can’t figure out if i lack the ability to accept death or if i accept it better than anything i’ve ever accepted in my life.
pain is the confusion of remembering without the ability to miss because theres still a small hope inside screaming that this isn’t real.
this is just a comatose dream i’ve been in since my own car crash. kylie is sitting at my bedside whispering into the wind, flowing her fingers through my brokenness and kissing my memories.
instant death is the opposite for those who have to survive after it’s over.
suddenly, i’m the oldest sibling. at fifteen, my brother and sister are seven. at fifteen i realize i don’t remember anything from when i was seven.
what happens to the girl made of fire, when it rains? is she just red hair, freckles and smirk waiting for the sun? is she just a memory waiting to fade? no. i can’t believe that.
it’s been five years. and i still have to take pills to sleep at night. i still get a shaky voice when i tell people why they have to wear their seat belts. i still haven’t been to your grave. i see you everywhere.
you’re laughter at all the wrong times. a cigarette at sixteen. and vodka in a water bottle.
you’re fire. especially when it rains.
