    Chapter fourteen
    Rosanna's P.O.V.
"Rosanna. Rosanna, it's time to wake up." I felt a pull on my shoulder. I peeled opened my eyes to see Hayden kneeling at the side of my bed. I ran my hands over my eyes, revealing crust from when I had cried. I sighed and swung my feet over the side of the bed.
"How long was I asleep?" I muttered.
"Two hours, so we need to catch up on chores."
I had forgotten that this was my second actual 'work' day. Half a month has gone by without me lifting so much a finger, I guess that was going to change now. My mind flashed back to the day when I first got here, when everyone gave me the cold shoulder; Cody was the one that was going to show me how everything worked around here... Why isn't he now?
    "Where's Cody?"
Hayden paused for a moment. "I'm going to help you out from now on, to... show you that... Well... so we can start over." I could see that Hayden was scrambling in his mind for the right words, but why was he hesitating? Was Cody terrified of me again? Why would he all of the sudden like me, then be scared again? I shook my head clear of the questions. I didn't need to dig deeper into this; there's no reason to. All I would be doing is making everything more complicated. I need to just move on, right?
"Alright." I spoke as I walked over to my closet lazily. I turned to Hayden. He was sitting on the bed, waiting for me to come with him to get work done. "I need to change..." I tried to get the hint over to Hayden, but he just raised an eyebrow.
    "You already did."
I looked down at my clothes. That's right, it's still the same day, I had changed this morning. A small blush escaped upon my face as I angled my feet to exit my room.
We made our way outside from the screen door and towards a barn. Hayden walked in front of me, opening the doors.
"We'll start by feeding the chickens. Do you remember how?" Hayden pulled up a sack of feed, turning to me expectantly. My eyes widened as I remembered the last time I had climbed that latter to feed the chickens. My mouth went try at the memory. Hayden frowned when he saw the expression on my face.
"Look, I'm not going to hurt you again. I thought we were going to drop this and move on. I have, so why can't you? What you did to Cody was worse than what I did to you and--" I flinched at every word that he spoke. I was scared of Hayden. I've never been truly scared of anyone. Not even my so called 'parents'.
"I- I..." My voice cracked as I lost my own train of thought. My entire brain seemed to go blank.
Hayden took a deep breath. "Alright, I see what I need to do." I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion at Hayden's words. What could he possibly mean? Before I could question Hayden, he spoke. "I'll get you to trust me. I'm going to spend as much time with you as I can. We'll do our chores together, eat together, and even go into town to relax every now and then. We'll prove to each other that we're both trustworthy people."
My eyes widened at the thought of spending every waking moment of the rest of my time here with Hayden.
I had a feeling that my stay here will be a lot more tension filled than planned, and I thought it was already awkward when I figured out who Cody was. Now I have to actually interact with Hayden. It would have been much easier just to do what I needed to do, then block out everyone when I was done.
Now, I'm not so sure of that plan.

    Chapter thirteen
    Rosanna's P.O.V.
I woke up the early the next morning. I couldn't help the tugging feeling of something being wrong about the way Cody was acting around me. I didn't want to get up. Soon enough, I didn't have a choice. A loud knock echoed from the door. I slammed my pillow over me, covering my face in an attempt to pretend I was asleep.
"Can I talk to you?" Cody's voice was some-what muffled from the pillow covering my ear. I had no choice but to talk to him. I couldn't pretend that I was asleep forever...
"What's up?" I asked. I sat up, leaning my back against the backboard of my bed, and clutching a pillow close to my chest.
"I... Just want to be friends. Is that okay?" Cody avoided eye contact with me. He seemed as though he were preparing for me to whack him upside the head.
"Alright." I couldn't help but feel a little relieved that nothing was going to be awkward between us, except for the fact that he was back to his usual ways, which meant he was scared of me again.
"Really?" He seemed to be shocked.
"What did you expect me to say?" I know I was traveling in a bit of dangerous water by asking this, but I couldn't help my curiosity. Cody started to fiddle with his thumbs nervously.
"N-nothing." He stuttered. "Breakfast is in ten minutes, Hayden's making pancakes." I nodded slightly as he left the room. It was my turn to be shocked this time. Not by Cody's strange mood swings, or change of decisions, but by the fact that Hayden was making breakfast allowing me to join in.
I jumped over to my closet, changing into some torn jeans, my black converse, and a plain pink v-neck with a white tank underneath. I rapped a weaved black belt over my t-shirt and around my hips. I brushed my tangled hair, then ran downstairs.
The sent of syrup lingered in the air. I sat down at the table without speaking a single word.
Hayden set a plate in front of Cody, Brandon, and I, then set his in front of the chair next to me. He took a seat, and we ate in silence. I had always been a slow eater, so Cody and Brandon finished before I did. They placed their plates in the sink and exited the kitchen to their rooms, leaving me alone with Hayden.
I tensed slightly at the thought. Hayden hates me. He tried, and succeeded, injuring me. I couldn't exactly blame him though...
"How's your breakfast?" Hayden turned to me curiously. I didn't respond, so he continued. "Look, I think we got off on the wrong foot. Can we just start over?" I stopped eating my food and twisted my head to face him. I didn't look for long. Something inside of me made my head snap back and just stare at my food. Hayden used his index finger to turn my chin, forcing me to face him and look into his eyes. "We've all made mistakes, we just need to move on." I got lost for a moment in his eyes, everything seemed so sincere.
"I don't deserve to move on." I choked out.
I pushed my chair out from under myself and ran towards the stairs. I bolted into my room, slamming the door shut. I let the tears that were burning the back of my eyes spill out over my comforter.
I don't deserve to move on.
The last thing I thought of before I drifted off into sleep, is how much I wished Jaythan was here.

    Chapter twelve
    Cody's P.O.V.
I laid in my bed, tossing and turning. Why was I doing this? Why did I agree to this? I wonder if she can see how much she really terrifies me.
My hand absent-mindedly ran over my ribs. A sharp pain made me flinch and withdraw my hand. They were soar from Rosanna leaning on them earlier.
I gave up with trying to get some sleep and ran out of my room. I froze at the site of Rosanna's door. She was probably sleeping soundly while I was out here with a guilty conscience and fear eating away at my body. My hands started to tremble, so I quickly, and quietly, tip toed my way towards the steps. I Leaned all my weight on the edge of the stairs to avoid their old creaking moans. My eyes landed on Hayden with his head stuck in the fridge, looking for a night snack. Hayden never seemed to not be hungry, so I wasn't surprised. The only this I was surprised about was the fact that he never gained any weight. He pulled out of the fridge with some random left overs that looked like a mix of lasagna and hamburgers. The light faded as he closed the door and sat the pile of food down on the counter. His hair was tossed in every which direction and his face had a sleepy look to it. The room was dark again, but I could tell he was raising an eyebrow.
"Why are you up?" He questioned while shoving the cold food into his mouth. I made my way down the rest of my stairs and into the kitchen. I flipped on the small light attached to an outlet. I wanted to be able to see, but I didn't want to wake everyone up in the process.
"I can't do this anymore." I groaned, running my hand over my face. "It's only been a day and I feel awful." Hayden tensed with anger as he looked at me.
"Don't you want to get her back for what she's done? She could have killed you, and your going to sit here with her in your own house and not do anything?" Hayden whisper-shouted in my face, causing some left overs to hit my forehead. I wiped them away and looked back at Hayden.
"It just doesn't feel right." I mumbled while rubbing the back of my neck.
"Doesn't feel right? Doesn't freaking feel right? What doesn't feel right is why you had to be stuck with everything bad! You got stuck with brain cancer, some how defeated it, just so some chick can almost take everything away right in front of us?" Hayden hissed. "You're going to break her heart whether you like it or not. This isn't just for you to get revenge, it's so she learns a lesson." He spat, slamming the rest of the left overs in the sink. Hayden narrowed his eyes as he clenched his fists at his side. I couldn't help but take a step back out of fear. Hayden's face immediately softened.
"Cody, I didn't mean to scare you, I jus--," The phone rang, cutting Hayden off in mid sentence. His fists clenched again as he walked over to the phone. He did his best to take a deep breath, then answered the phone.
"Hello?" There was still a little venom in Hayden's tone, but I don't think anyone, who didn't know him well, would be able to detect it. "Yeah, yeah, sure." He muttered. A smile came across his face as he turned to face me. "Jaythan? It's Hayden... hows jail treatin' ya?" A pause fell over, then Hayden placed the phone on speaker. "Rosanna? She's asleep."
Jaythan's voice crackled through the phone. "Just go get her." He demanded. Hayden inspected his nails, as if not to care.
"So, you still love her, don't you?" A smirk plastered on Hayden's face as he spoke.
"That's none of your business. Now, let me talk to her." I could her an edge to Jaythan's voice now. It was obvious he cared for her, the way he looked when she got hurt was un-mistakable.
"Who's going to make me do that? Oh! An even better question is: who's going to make her do that?" I furrowed my eyebrows together. What is he getting at?
"What do you mean who's going to make her? Just go get her already." Jaythan's voice took on an impatient tone.
"You may want to talk to her, but she doesn't want to talk to you. See love, it's a two way street. It only counts if both the people care about each other. You may care about her, but does she care about you?" Hayden questioned. Still confused, I stayed silent.
"Of course she does!" Jaythan shouted, his voice taking up a small octave. I'd never heard Jaythan speak like this, obviously Hayden had struck a nerve.
"Tell me, has she visited you yet? Called the jail? Sent you a letter?" The other side of the phone fell silent. "Well?"
Jaythan cleared his throat. "I... I haven't been here that long. She's... probably been busy." I could tell he was racking his brain for an answer. I wouldn't know what to do if I were in his position. I wasn't even him, and I was at a loss for words.
"Too busy to contact you, but not too busy to spend the entire day in someone's arms?" Hayden barely got the sentence out before Jaythan screamed on the other line.
"Keep your f*cking hands away from her! I swear to god when--" Hayden clicked the end call button as his grin grew wider. My eyes almost popped out of my head.
"What did you just do?" I have shouted, my voice cracking at the end. "When he gets out, he'll kill me for sure!"
Hayden rolled his eyes. "Well obviously you can't follow through with this plan, so I'll do it myself. Just tell Rosanna you want to be just friends, and I'll work my magic." Hayden gave a small wink, then walked off to his room, leaving me standing in the dim light.

On the second to last day of school
I was walking with my friends to go back inside since gym class ended.
There was a plain white van parked by the door. (An electrician to fix a light in the school, but there wasn't any writing on the van, it was just plain white.)
A sixth grader ran past me, hugged the van and yelled "I WANT CANDY!"
The look on the electrician's face? Priceless.
    Made my day <3
(Fave if you get it .. if your hopelessly confused, highlight below...)
Ever heard of a man driving up in a white van on the street, and saying he has candy? Then kidnapping the kids? The sixth grader was making a joke out of that...
I just wish my friends and I had thought of it first(:
