Friends Forever
(Chapter One)
"Do you wanna play tag?" "No, not in this dress!" "So?" I sat up and glared at my best friend Kaleb, who was still laying in the grass of his backyard. He had long dark brown hair that sometimes got in the way of his sweet brown eyes. "So, I don't want to get grass stains on it!" He stood up, too, looking me in the face. "You wore it for today, and you never care if you get dirty." "Well, today I do!" I looked at my new outfit I had bought, just for this. A short sleeved white shirt with puffy sleeves, a light pink jumper with white polka dots, white socks with lace on the end, and shiny new Mary Janes. To top it all off, I had a pink bow in my hair that matched the jumper. "Why?" He was just wearing typical clothes, so he didn't understand. "Because, I want to wear it on the first day of first grade." "Just get your mom to wash it." He'd cornered me. I had to tell him the real reason why. "...well...maybe I don't wanna play games. You can play games with other kids, but you can't talk about the same stuff as us." It was the truth; he couldn't. We talked about the other students in our class, and how dumb they were, but we spent so much time together we were often teased by everyone. We never wanted to play with blocks, sand, crafts, paint, computers, dress-up, or any of that other stuff. Kaleb and I just liked talking. On the playground, while we were running, I bumped into Alice Marie, a popular girl, "on accident", and she fell in a giant mud puddle, soaking herself. She went to the nurse for spare clothes, but there were none left, so she had to walk around in a muddy dress for the rest of the day. I was recalling the story out loud, and Kaleb laughed at the memory. I was obviously not a preppy girl, so this dress was new for me. I didn't like it, but I wore it for him. He was moving to a different state today, and I wanted to look pretty for him. I told him I'd be right back, went to my house next door, and changed into play clothes. He seemed happier after that. We ran around and played tag, hide and seek, and red-light green-light. We climbed up in the giant tree and he kissed my cheek. "Ick!" I exclamied, and I punched him in the arm for it. He called me a "meanie" and climbed down, me following shortly after. We didn't know what else to do, so we just layed in the grass and named the clouds after what they looked like. Soon, a honk was heard from out front. "Oh no!" I cried. Kaleb didn't say anything. Tears were welling up in his eyes. As the tears fell down his face, I hugged him until he stopped. I led him to the front of his house where the Dawson's van was parked, Mr. and Mrs. Dawson inside, waiting for Kaleb and his brother, Marcus. "Well, I guess this is good-bye, Crissy..." he said pulling me into a hug. "Bye Kay, have a great time in your new town!" I tried to be as optimistic as possible about the situation. Mr. Dawson honked the horn again, "Kaleb! Hurry up and say good-bye to the Pheffer family and let's go! We have a long drive, lots of traffic! Marcus, say bye to your girlfriend and get in the car!" Kaleb backed out, looking stressed. I quickly kissed his cheek in a friendly way, nobody noticing, and he was in the car before I knew it. And that was that. I watched Kaleb Dawson, my best friend, secretly the love of my life, head off to a brand new town, knowing I might not ever see him again. I struggled to keep it all in, but inside my head, tears were falling like rain.
