Alone
Chapter 2
In surprise of what was happening, I stood Christine up and helped her walk over to the parking lot.
I couldn't help her much. I was busy looking for some nice looking family to give us a ride.
I finally spotted one. A mother and a kid. They should have space in the car, I thought.
Christine and I wobbled over to the car.
"Ma'am?"
She turned to look at me.
"Do you mind giving us a ride to the hospital? My friend is about to have her baby."
She looked at Christine then at me and smiled.
"Sure. Get in the car. Lucas, make room for these girls!"
I helped Christine get in the car and I sat next to her.
The mother was teaching Christine breathing techniques to calm her down as she drove. She said it helped her when she gave birth to Lucas.
"Where are your parents?" the mother asked.
I looked at Christine and she looked at me. "Uh, they're out of town right now." I lied.
"How could they leave you here when she's pregnant?" I saw her shake her head in disbelief.
I had nothing else to say.
We arrived at the hospital and I helped Christine out.
She kept on complaining on how badly the baby was kicking her.
"I'll help her to the room," the mother grabbed one of the wheelchairs left on the side of the room. "If you could just walk normal pace with Lucas, please. Get to know him."
I nodded and took Lucas by the hand and watched Christine and Lucas's mom hurry to the elevator.
"Is she gonna have a baby?" Lucas asked, worry in his eyes.
"Yep," I nodded.
Lucas looked down at his feet as we walked. "I'm Lucas. I'm 5. I don't have any brothers or sisters. I don't have a daddy."
I looked at him. "Well, I'm an only child too," I waited for the elevator doors to open and we stepped in.
I clicked the buttons to the hospital room. "And my daddy's almost always away."
Lucas still didn't look up, but he didn't say anything either.
"I'm scared," he finally mumbled.
"Of what?" I asked. The elevator began moving.
Lucas looked around startled and held onto my arm tight. "Of that!" he buried his face in my arm.
I held onto Lucas. "It's ok, you're ok." I assured him, rubbing his back. I kept repeating it over and over until the elevator stopped.
He slowly let go of me and looked around at the halls. I saw a doctor strolling Christine down the hall. Lucas's mom was following behind. "Come on, Lucas, let's go." He and I hurried down the hall and walked into the room they had pushed Christine too. She was now lying on the hospital bad, yelping in pain. "We'll get your baby out soon.." I heard Lucas mumble.
