Chapter 2
I was staring into the eyes of my ex-boyfriend Ryan. Ryan, the boy who wouldn’t stop calling me after we broke up. Ryan, the boy who begged me to take him back. The one who flat out told me he would never love another. We had dated for eight months this school year, but his personality was too much for me to handle. He would be overly affectionate one minute, then the next he would yell and shake with anger over this and that. I never knew what to expect when I was with him. I was hoping that I could be away for the summer and not have to deal with him. Of course, I had no such luck.
Ryan stuck out his hand and I shook it, pretending I had no idea who he was. He smirked at my obvious discomfort. I knew that Jake was questioning what was going on, but I wasn’t going to be the one who filled him in.
I turned around and hopped onto the jet-ski, pulling Lilah on after me. Jake unhooked the front and back and pushed us off. I was so thankful I got away from that awkward moment, but that relief wasn’t long-lived. As we were floating away, I could hear Jake say, “Man, what the hell was that? I know she’s pretty and all, but don’t go puttin’ the moves on my girl.” If it weren’t for Lilah holding onto me, I would have passed out right there.
Lilah and I went around for a bit, and then took it back in. Jake was nowhere in sight, which worried me, so I grabbed the dock and hooked up the jet-ski myself. I took Lilah’s hand and we walked up to the camp.
Their camp was beautiful, much different then mine. Walking in the front, you see a spiral staircase going up to the loft where Jake and Lilah shared a sleeping space. Behind the staircase was the living room. The fireplace was off to the side for rainy days or cold nights the summer sometimes brought. The kitchen and Jake’s mom’s room were on separate sides of the living room.
I saw Carrie, Jake’s mom, in the kitchen so I walked in and pulled Lilah up to a chair.
“How are you today hun?” she asked as she sat down a plate of oranges for Lilah to have as a snack.
“Oh alright, I suppose,” I answered. “Didn’t realize Jake had a friend up or else I wouldn’t have intruded.”
Carrie turned to me and snapped, “Brooklyn, you know as well as I do that you are always welcome here, despite what Jake is doing. Besides, Lilah loves having you around, don’t you hunny?”
Lilah shook her head yes and smiled between mouthfuls.
I smiled and ruffled her hair, “Good, because I loving being around you too. I’ve got to head back though, Mom wants me back for dinner tonight.”
She nodded and told me she’d let Jake know I had gone back to my camp. I gave Lilah and kiss on the top of her head and turned right smack into Jake.
“What’s the hurry?” he asked after I mumbled sorry and tried to go around him.
“Oh, nothing. I have to head back for dinner with my family.”
“See you later then. Ryan’ll chill when we run later.”
I nodded and walked back smiling, knowing he cared enough about me to ditch Ryan for a bit. The smile didn’t last long though, as I began to worry that Ryan might have told Jake stories…I shivered. I hoped with everything I had that Ryan had kept his mouth shut.
