She should try it with the new guy! Love is a fickle thing, or rather, it is like the ocean. If it is real, it always comes back to the shore. A boat can't change the path of the tides, the waves. If the first guy really loves her, then it won't hurt her to try with someone new. And if he doesnt, well then, she's helping herself move on.

I agree that self harm isn't something that should be treated as a trend. I think self harm as a "trend" (in the sense that people do it because it's "cool") is rare, and that people use the idea to justify it to themselves. As for the girl one, girl two situation, you can have all of the things we perceive as making a person successful and still have depression. Assuming that privilege instantly negates any possibility of mental illness is incredibly harmful, and it one of the greatest faults when discussing mental illness to assume that a person must fit into this box or that box. Depression can be caused by a lot of things, and we can't invalidate a person's mental illness because they don't fit our perception of the disease. Suffering and mental illness are not a competition.
