“Ugh, why are you wearing long sleeves again?” Emmie pushed back her long, artificially blond hair behind her bony shoulder. “It’s, like, fifty degrees outside.”
Alora stopped lipglossing her poised lips to give Emmie a quizzical look. “You talking Celsius?”
“I haven’t talked to him since that New Year’s party. He’s such a loser,” Emmie shot a smile at a passing boy. Alora just rolled her eyes at Emmie’s stupidity.
“I’m freezing,” I turned towards my locker to put away my science book but mostly to avoid Alora’s questioning eyes.
“But you always wear long sleeves. You can’t always be cold,” Alora raised one eyebrow.
I slammed my locker shut and started to walk away. “You guys talking about how warm it is isn’t going to make me any warmer.”
The two quickly ran to fall into step on either side of me.
This was who we were. And who we were was the most popular girls in school.
The day had finally finished and we walked through the loud and busy hallway, most students chatting about what they were going to be doing that weekend, others screaming out random lyrics to “Friday” by Rebecca Black.
For everyone else in that building, including the teachers, this was the best part of school; the weekend. For me, it meant a long two days alone with my family. Or more specifically, my stepdad.
The weekends scared me.
“So what are you guys doing this weekend?” asked Alora as she checked her twitter for the seventh time that hour on her phone. She looked up at Emmie who was busy winking at a boy across the school’s lawn that had a skateboard in one hand and a cigarette in the other. She sighed and looked over at me, but I was busy chewing my fingernails off.
“What the h*ll? You’re gonna ruin your nails!” Alora swatted my hand and I turned sharply towards her.
“Get your hands off me,” I snarled, startling Alora so much she took a couple steps back.
I breathed in deeply and waved goodbye to Alora and Emmie as Byron pulled up next to the curb, rolling down his window to smirk in my direction. I knew that Alora was probably still shaken up and wanted an explanation for my outburst but I wasn’t in the mood. I walked down the cement steps and past the fountain.
The fountain had a large version of our mascot, The Warriors, and the water pouring out of his mouth in the middle of it. On the bench around the fountain, a variety of people sat. I passed a couple geeks trading Pokémon cards, two girls texting and chewing gum loudly, and Kylie Marks and Will Cassedy holding hands and kissing each other as the water fell behind them. I refused to make eye contact with any of them until I passed a boy who was sitting alone silently, watching. His eyes followed me and my eyes followed his eyes.
His body didn’t move at all.
Only his eyes.
He had blue eyes.
“Yo, Mace!” Byron’s shouting brought me back to reality as I realized I was going to walk straight into a mud puddle. I tore my stare away from his and made my way to the car.
I lowered myself into the black leather seats and Byron leaned over to kiss me on the cheek. I burrowed my eyebrows and stared straight ahead, thinking hard to figure out who that kid was.
“Who was that dude?” Byron started to drive up the hill towards my neighborhood. “You were making some serious eye contact with him.”
I shook my head. “I have no idea.”
Byron laughed. “Well, I can make that kind of eye contact with you, too!” I smiled as he stared at me with his eyes crossed and a silly smile smeared across his face. He stuck out his tongue and I heard myself laughing.
You see, I was already having an outer body experience before it happened.
Before we got run off the road.
