I couldn’t believe it. All this time, he was trying to mess up the friendship between Jessica and I. He tricked me into thinking that Jessica was a bad friend – in a way, she was – but he was worse.
My phone buzzed. I looked at the screen; there was a new message from Ethan.
Brooke, what the hell did I do?
I angrily deleted the message and dialed Jessica’s number, collapsing on my bed.
“Jessica!” I cried, when she picked up.
“Brooke? What happened?” she said, concern in her voice.
“Come over. Please. I need you.”
“So, what happened?” said Jessica, plopping herself down on my bed.
I sighed, “Ethan was lying all this time wasn’t he?”
Jessica had a pained expression on her face, “Look, Brooke… I know you like him, as a friend, and all… But… He… Yeah. I’m sorry. But yeah.”
I felt like something jabbed my heart.
“But why?” I whispered.
“He was jealous. He thought he was being replaced or something.”
I nodded. “Jessica, can I saw the text you sent him.”
She froze, it kind of looked forced in a way.
“You’ve been sleeping with Danny?” my voice cracked.
Almost instantly I was in Jessica’s arms.
“Brooke, please. I’m so sorry. I won’t ever talk to him again I’m so sorry please don’t be mad—“
“No, Jess. It’s fine.” I said, wiping my tears, “As long as that isn’t the reason you became friends with me in ninth grade.”
“No! Never. I love you, Brooke. You’re my best friend.”
I checked her thoughts, just in case.
I feel so bad. How could I have slept with my best friend’s boyfriend? I can’t lose her over this. I can’t.
Hearing that made me feel better.

The beach was practically empty; it was too cold this time of year to go swimming or anything. I leaned against my car until I saw a gray Ferrari pull up. I backed up a bit as I saw Ethan get out of his car.
“Brooke.” He said breathlessly, as he came towards me.
“Stay away from me.” I said, quickly moving away from him.
He looked hurt, “Why’d you ask me to come?”
“Why did you call?” I asked, tears pricking my eyes.
“Because I wanted to see if you were okay—“
“The real reason!” I yelled.
He was speechless for a moment, “Because I wanted to explain.”
“You hurt me.”
“That’s exactly how she wanted you to feel.”
“Who?”
He didn’t answer, so I looked into his mind. Jessica.
“Jessica?” I said, breathlessly.
He looked away, and nodded.
“Brooke, we were best friends for seven years. How could you think I would do such a thing? I would never try and break you Danny up. Jessica… she’s not your friend.”
“Slow down. What the hell?”
Ethan was my best friend since 3rd grade, until what happened in 9th grade. I had started going out with Danny then, and that was the year I met Jessica. She kept telling me that Ethan was jealous of me and Danny, and they way she talked – it made me paranoid. Every time Ethan would say something about me and Danny, or just relationships in general, I would freak out and accuse him of trying to break me and Danny up. Jessica had a way with words; I just believed anything she said.
After Ethan told me everything, about how Jessica “coincidentally” became friends with me right when I started dating Danny and how she only became friends with me to get Danny for her self. It all made sense. Everything fit together; Ethan was right. Why hadn’t I heard it in her thoughts yet? Why did she keep referring to me as her best friend in her thoughts?
I’m sorry this happened. I heard Ethan think to himself.
“Not your fault.” I mumbled. It took me a while to realize what I had just said. I turned and saw Ethan starting at me wide-eyed.
