    Our Summer
    Chapter 47
Once Lucas put his arm around me, the guy immediately stopped flirting with me, which I was thankful for. Because of my lack of experience, I had no idea what to say to him.
They talked for awhile and then I got a text from Jamie, asking where we were. A few minutes after I replied, she showed up with Alex in tow.
A few more people gathered around us, and talked for awhile. I was relieved when Lucas dragged me to go on another ride with him. I didn’t like talking to people I didn’t know.
The day passed surprisingly fast and when the sun began to set, Lucas led me up the beach away from the crowd. We went past his house and a little further down until we got to an old wooden dock.
He took my hand as we walked down to the end of it and sat down. My feet just barely brushed the surface of the water.
“Me and Brayden used to come down here all the time when we were little,” he smiled and stared out at the horizon, lost in a memory.
    “Really?” I asked, softly.
“Yeah. We loved it,” he looked at me. “I’ve always wanted to watch the fireworks from here,” he whispered, pushing a strand of hair off my face. I bit my lip and looked down.
“Why do you do that?” he asked, an amused smile lighting his face.
“What?” I asked, feeling my face heat up.
“It’s like you’re shy or something,” he said, watching my face carefully. My cheeks were burning.
    “Or something,” I whispered.
“And what exactly would that be?” he asked, curiously. I shook my head and looked away, unable to answer. There was just no simple way to tell this guy – this guy who could make me smile without doing anything, who gave me goose bumps when it was at least eighty degrees outside, and who I was completely comfortably yet nervous around at the same time - that even though I’ve barely known him for two weeks, I think I’m falling in love with him.
AN: Hey everyone. Thanks so much! You're all making me sad that Natalie has to leave with you, "she should stay forever!" comments! Lol. Promise not to hate me when she leaves?! Haha. Thank you all for the feedback! Every single one of you is amazing. (: Have a wonderful day! ♥

    Chapter 46
“Oh, hey Lucas,” the guy in front of us turned. Breanna turned too. I could feel Lucas tense up beside me. I slid my hand into his as he greeted them. I saw Breanna’s eyes flicker towards out hands and then back up to my face. She bit her lip and looked away.
Lucas introduced me to the guy, Jace. They struck up a conversation, which neither Breanna nor I joined in. Finally, the line moved up and our turn came.
I had a lot more fun on the ride than I expected. I was laughing most of the time.
“Now aren’t you glad I made you do that?” Lucas teased when we got off. I was impressed at how well he was talking bumping into Breanna and Jace.
“No,” I joked. I purposely bumped into his side, and he wrapped his arm around my waist.
“You’re a liar,” he accused. I laughed and shook my head.
“You’re the liar,” I leaned my head on his shoulder. We sat down together on a picnic table.
“I would never lie to you,” he whispered into my ear. I shivered as goose bumps covered my arms. “Are you cold?” he asked, a little confused since the sun was still high in the sky.
“No,” I assured him with a smile. He looked at me quizzically, but fortunately he didn’t say anything else about it.
A few minutes later, a guy I recognized from Lucas’s – our – birthday party came over and greeted Lucas. He said hi to me.
“You’re Natalie, right? I remember you,” he said, giving me a flirty smile. I was surprised. Guys didn’t usually remember me, and guys definitely didn’t flirt with me.
“Yeah,” I smiled, nervously, racking my brain for his name.
“So a pretty girl like you probably already has someone to watch the fireworks with tonight,” he said. I looked at Lucas, confused. I didn’t know there were fireworks tonight.
“Yeah, we’re probably going to watch them with Jamie,” Lucas dropped his arm over my shoulders, seemingly casual, but I knew what he was doing. I was his girl now, and he wanted this guy – whose name I could not remember for the life me – to know it.
AN: Hello, all. Thanks for reading! You guys are so amazing. (: I love coming on here to read the comments you leave. Thanks so much (again)! Have an amazing day. ♥

    Chapter 45
Once Jamie finished venting about Brayden, we went swimming for awhile. After a few hours, we headed back to the house for lunch. When we finished eating, I changed into sweats and sat down in the living room to read while Jamie watched TV.
“Hey, babe,” Lucas walked in about twenty minutes later. I smiled and got butterflies in my stomach. “Go get dressed.”
“Someone’s pushy,” I teased, closing my book.
“I’m sorry,” he grinned. “Please go get dressed.”
    “What’re we doing?” I asked.
“I wanted to take you down to the fair,” he said and slid his hands in his pockets. I smiled; it was cute when he did that.
“Okay. Give me a few minutes,” I set my book on an end table and headed to my room.
I picked out a purple plaid baby doll tank top, a pair of jean shorts, and flip flops. I brushed my hair and put a purple headband in. After a few moments, I decided not to put any makeup on.
It only took me about ten minutes to get ready and when I came back into the living room, Lucas was sitting on the couch with Jamie.
“I’ll probably come up later with Alex,” she told us before we left. “Keep your phone with you so I can find you, Nat.”
“’Kay, I will. See you later!”
Lucas and I walked hand in hand down to the beach to the fair. When we got there, he bought us a funnel cake to share. He couldn’t believe it when I told him it was the first time I’d ever had one.
“One year,” he told me, “all I ate one day was these – and trust me, a twelve year old boy can down a lot of them.”
“How’d that work out for you?” I laughed.
“I threw up,” he said, sadly.
“Bet you learned your lesson, huh?”
“Nope,” he grinned and shoved a huge bit in his mouth. I rolled my eyes at him.
A few minutes later, after we finished eating, Lucas talked me into going on a ride with him. We got in line behind a couple our age. After a moment, I realized why the girl seemed familiar. It was Breanna.
AN: Hey, everyone. Thanks for reading! I've got about ten chapters left, if I remember right, so hopefully in 2-3 weeks, you'll have the whole story. (: Thanks again for reading. I really appreciate it. Have a wonderful day! ♥

    Chapter 44
“What happened?” Jamie exclaimed. Brayden cringed.
“That bad?” he asked, sitting down in a chair.
    “Yeah, kind of,” she replied.
“I feel like s**t,” he ran his hands through his messy hair.
“You look like s**t, too,” Lucas told him. I slapped his leg and Brayden gave him a dirty look. “Sorry,” he mumbled, ducking his head. I tried not to smile at how adorable he looked.
“What time did you come home last night?” Jamie asked. Brayden shrugged.
    “Don’t know.”
Jamie rolled her eyes. “What did you do to your face?”
Brayden shrugged again. “Got in a fight,” he answered.
    “Well, obviously. With who?”
Brayden shrugged once more in response to Jamie’s question.
“Whatever,” she shook her head and stood up. “I’m going down to the beach. Nat, you want to come?”
“Sure.” I got up and went to my room to change into my swimsuit.
Rather than go in the water when we got out to the beach, Jamie and I sat on our towels and talked.
“I don’t know what Brayden’s problem is. He’s never like this!” she complained.
    “Like what?”
“Well, he’s never been in a fight before, that I know of, at least. And when he punched Lucas, that was bulls**t,” she said.
“What did he say when you went up to talk to him after that?” I asked.
“Pretty much exactly what he said about his black eye earlier. Absolutely nothing.”
“He’s usually not like that, though?” I said, trying to defend him while also asking Jamie if it were true.
“Yeah, but he still almost never hangs out with us. All he does is sit in his room since Addy broke up with him.”
I shrugged. I couldn’t really say much. After all, I’ve never seen him act differently.
AN: Hey everyone. I know this chapter is kind of slow, and pretty short too, so I'm sorry! If I get the chance, I might add another one this afternoon or tonight. Thanks so much for sticking with me! It means a lot(: Have a great day! ♥

    Chapter 43
The next morning, I slept in until almost eight. When I headed out to the kitchen, I realized I was the only kid awake. I wondered what time Brayden and Jamie had gotten home last night.
I sat in the living room for awhile until Jamie came out and sat next to me. She looked tired, but blissfully happy.
    “Good morning,” I said.
“Why’d you leave last night?” she asked curiously.
“Got bored,” I shrugged. “Where’d you and Alex go?” I asked, trying not to sound annoyed that she had ditched me.
“Nowhere,” she smiled giddily – was she blushing?
“Ooh,” I pushed her shoulder gently and wiggled my eyebrows.
    “What?” she laughed.
“You left, too, didn’t you?” I realized.
“Maybe – but not as early as you,” she said. I made a face at her.
    “So where’d you go?”
“Just back to his house,” she smiled. I knew there was more to the story.
    “And?” I prompted.
“And nothing!” she squealed. I rolled my eyes, not believing it for a moment. “Shut up,” she mumbled. I laughed. “It’s not like you can say anything!” she retorted. I rolled my eyes.
“We watched a movie,” I told her.
“You’re so lame,” she told me. I shrugged. I didn’t care if I was lame or not – last night was a lot of fun.
The two of us quieted when Lucas came down the stairs.
“Morning, sleepyhead,” I teased him. He smiled at me and sat down next to me.
    “Where’s Brayden?” Jamie asked.
“I don’t know,” Lucas dropped his arm around my shoulders. “Probably still sleeping.”
“He came home, didn’t he?” Jamie sounded worried.
“I heard him come up,” Lucas assured her. “Weren’t you with him?”
“I left,” she told him casually. Lucas raised his eyebrows at me, and I shrugged.
“Do I want to know?” he asked.
“Probably not,” I told him. He squeezed my shoulder and smiled.
“Shut up,” Jamie hit me with a pillow. I laughed.
    “So abusive!” I teased.
I heard someone coming down the stairs and looked over. It was Brayden. When we saw his face, we all fell silent in surprise. His entire left eye was swollen and bruised.
AN: I feel horrible. I cannot believe I took so long to update... I am so sorry :( But thank you if you are still reading this(: it means a lot to me! Feedback please? Thanks. Have a great day, everyone! ♥

    Chapter 42
About ten minutes later, Lucas pulled up to the curb in his mom’s car. I shamefully slid into the front seat.
“Did you tell anyone you were leaving?” he asked.
“No,” I mumbled. He pulled out his phone and sent a quick text. Then he pulled the car away from the curb.
“Are you okay?” he asked, glancing at me, concerned. I nodded.
    “I’m fine,” I assured him.
“Not what you expected?” He took my hand and gave it a sympathetic squeeze.
“I was ditched and then hit on by a drunk guy who almost threw up on me,” I replied, bluntly. Lucas cringed.
“You weren’t even there that long,” he stated. I pulled off my shoes.
“I know. Thanks for coming to get me,” I sighed.
“Don’t worry about it,” he gave me a sweet smile. “Tell you what,” he pulled into the driveway. “I’ll go make some popcorn and you pick out a movie. My mom’s got some chick flicks you’d probably like,” he rolled his eyes. I smiled a little.
“Okay,” I said, liking the plan. “Lucas,” I put my hand on his arm as he started to get out of the car. He stopped and turned back towards me.
    “Yeah?”
“You’re amazing,” I told him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. He gave me a smile and then got out of the car.
I followed him inside, and then I went into the living room to pick the movie while he went to the kitchen to make some popcorn. After a few minutes, I decided on The Notebook, despite the fact that I’ve seen it a million times before.
Lucas teased me a little bit on my choice, but he put the DVD in and hit play. As the commercials played, we got comfortable on the couch together.
He had turned off the lights, and by the time the movie was half over, I was almost asleep. Before it was three quarters of the way over, I was out cold. The next thing I remembered was Lucas shaking me awake.
    “Movie’s over,” he whispered.
“What did you think?” I mumbled, sitting up and rubbing my eyes. He looked at me with the edges of his lips turned up in a hint of a smile.
“It was good,” he admitted and kissed my forehead. “Let’s get you to bed,” he said. He stood and helped me up, and then he walked me to the door of my room.
AN: You guys should be proud of me. I updated two days in a row! (: Lol. Again, thanks for sticking with me and this story, even though my updating is kind of sporadic. Also, no one ruin The Notebook for me. I actually have not seen it! Lol. Anyways, thanks for reading. Have a great day, all of you!! ♥

    Chapter 41
When we got to the house, the sun had begun to set, and the party was already in full swing.
We walked past a couple making out on the porch on our way in, and I looked away uncomfortably. Not long after we entered the crowded, smoke-filled house, a guy came over and greeted Brayden, and the two disappeared somewhere. Now it was just me and Jamie.
When I saw Alex walk over, I knew that soon it would just be me. They started talking, and I stood there feeling like a third wheel.
Awhile later, Jamie told me she was going to go get something to drink. Alex tagged along. She said she’d be back in a few minutes, but fifteen minutes later, I was pretty convinced that I wouldn’t be seeing either of them for the rest of the night.
“Hey, I know you,” a guy’s voice said from behind me. I turned. It was one of Brayden’s friends from the birthday party. I groaned inwardly. “You’re Natalie, right?” He was drunk already. I thought about lying for a moment but decided against it.
“Yeah,” I forced a smile. For the life of me, I couldn’t remember what his name was.
“I remember you,” he grinned. “Why don’t you come dance with me?” he stepped towards me and tried to take my hand. I stepped backwards quickly and bumped into someone.
“Watch where you’re going!” The guy said angrily. I’d made him spill his beer down his shirt.
    “I’m sorry!”
“Don’t worry about them,” Brayden’s friend slurred. “Hey, weren’t we going to dance?” he looked confused.
    “Actually, I don’t really want – “
Before I could finish, he curled over and threw up on the floor next to me. I gagged and rushed out of the house, thankful he had missed my new shoes.
I started walking down the street and realized I had no idea where I was going. I stopped and looked around. I didn’t recognize anything. I pulled out my phone and called the beach-house.
“Hello?” I was grateful to hear Lucas’ voice.
“Hey, it’s Natalie,” I bit my lip.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” he said, suddenly alert.
“Nothing, I was just – I was wondering if – is there any way you could come get me?”
AN: Well, here's the party, everyone. What do you think? (: Sorry I took awhile, again. I'm hoping that now that it's summer and I've kind of settled into it, I'll be able to update more often. Anyways, I'm thinking about writing a sequel to this after it's finished, but it'll be focused a lot more on Jamie. The narrator would still be Natalie. Just throwing the idea out there to see what you guys think. Leave a comment and let me know? Thanks! And thanks for reading, I appreciate it! Have a great day, everyone! ♥

    Chapter 40
The next few days passed similarly. When people were around, Lucas stuck to the more subtle ways of touching me, but when we were alone, he was constantly hugging me and holding my hands, although he didn’t kiss me again.
Then Friday, the night of the big party, came around. The fair had started in the early afternoon, and before the party, Jamie and I walked down.
We didn’t do much except eat some cotton candy that Alex bought for us. We headed back to the house around suppertime.
After we ate, Jamie and I went to get ready. Jamie helped me pick out my outfit – short white shorts, a bright blue halter top with a cute beaded front, wedges that were the same blue, and some earrings that matched the beading on the top. She dressed likewise.
“Are you sure I look okay?” I asked for the third time.
“Yes, Natalie. You look great,” Jamie said as she finished straightening her hair. I sighed.
“Maybe I shouldn’t go.” I’d never been to a party before, and with the knot in my stomach, I didn’t know if I wanted to change that. Jamie gave me a look.
“You’re going,” she said firmly. I sighed again.
After what seemed like forever, it was finally time to go. When Jamie and I walked into the kitchen, Lucas looked up and caught my eye, but he quickly looked away again.
“You ready?” Brayden, who was sitting next to Lucas, asked.
“Let’s go,” Jamie said. Lucas wasn’t going.
As I followed Jamie out the door, I took one last look at Lucas, still sitting alone at the island, holding his glass of water in his hand.
I shook my head and followed Jamie out to the car that Brayden and Lucas now shared – not that either of them used it much. When you lived right on the beach like that, everything that you can do in a town like this is just a few steps out your back door.
I slid into the backseat and tried not to think about Lucas as Brayden pulled out of the driveway.
AN: So I know that I didn't add this right away, but hey, it was quicker than last time, right? Lol. Thanks for sticking with me anyways, guys. I love you all. Thanks for reading. Feedback please? (: Have a wonderful day, everyone!! ♥

    Chapter 39
We both stared at each other for a few moments, before smiles spread slowly across each of our faces. His hands were on my neck, just at my jaw line, and his thumbs gently brushed over my cheeks. My hands rested on his muscular biceps. He slid his arms around my waist and pulled me into a tight hug. He laughed. I pulled back enough to see his face.
    “What’s so funny?” I asked.
“Nothing. Everything,” he contradicted himself, pulling me tight again.
“You’re always laughing, and I don’t know why!” I accused, with a smile myself.
“Is there something wrong with that?” he finally let me go, and stood back a little, with his arms still at my waist.
“No,” I smiled, and I know I blushed. “I like it when you laugh.”
“Well, that’s good,” he took a small step toward me and leaned his forehead against mine. “It’s cute when you do that,” he said, touching my check.
“Do what?” I asked. My face, by now, was surely fire-engine red.
“Blush,” he said softly, and came ever closer. I glanced down at my feet, digging my toes into the sand.
    “Are you nervous?” he whispered.
    “No,” I denied.
    “Then look at me.”
I did as he said, just to prove I wasn’t nervous – although the butterflies in my stomach said otherwise. My gaze was instantly caught by the blue-green beauty of his eyes. I noticed for the first time that there were also tiny flecks of grey, making them all the more attractive.
This time I stepped closer, and our bodies were pressed tightly together. I found that it was getting a little harder to breath.
“Natalie,” he whispered, taking my head in his hands and tilting it upward. I loved the way my name sounded coming from those lips.
“Lucas,” I breathed, and my eyes flitted to his perfect lips. They were coming closer and closer to my own. There we so close, almost there…
    “Lucas!”
We jumped apart guiltily, but Lucas took my hand as Brayden jogged up.
“Hey, you guys want to watch a movie with us?” he asked, glancing at our intertwined hands and then up to my face. I looked down to the sand, uncomfortable.
“Sure,” Lucas decided. “We’ll be up in a few minutes.”
AN: Okay, okay, I know I promised to try for at least a chapter a day, but that was before I realized how busy I was going to be :( Sorry guys. Thanks for sticking with me anyways. (: Love you for it. Read && Fave && Comment. I appreciate it. (: Have a wonderful day. ♥

    Our Summer
    Chapter 38
The rain had stopped overnight, and the clouds had passed. It was a little cooler than usual, but that didn’t deter any of us from going swimming.
For the most part, the day passed as usual, except the cute little smiles Lucas flashed me now seemed to have a different meaning. When he dunked me playfully, his hands definitely lingered. He touched me, almost imperceptibly, a lot more – a brush of our hands, and gentle hand on my back, tucking a stray hair off my face… They were all little things, but they meant the world to me.
After supper that night, Lucas murmured into my ear, “Let’s go for a walk.”
We both headed outside unnoticed and started down the beach. Neither one of us had bothered to put on shoes. The water lapped at our ankles as we walked, and Lucas slid his hand into mine, making me feel warm and bubbly inside.
“It’s only been a week and a half, but this summer has already been the best summer of my life,” Lucas told me. I smiled and blushed.
“It’s been pretty amazing,” I agreed. “I never thought,” I stopped in the middle of my sentence and shook my head.
    “What?” Lucas asked curiously.
“It’s just – Jamie always gets the guys. I never thought I’d actually find a guy on this trip.”
“Well, considering she’s my cousin, she wasn’t much competition,” Lucas pointed out, and I smiled. “Not that you would’ve either way,” he added with more seriousness. I blushed.
“You’re only saying that because you don’t know what it’s like to not be related to her. Every other guy falls head over heels for her.”
“Well, I’m not every other guy, and I say that you’re just as beautiful as her, if not more,” Lucas said firmly.
Beautiful? I must’ve heard him wrong. No one has ever called me beautiful, except Jamie and my mom, (and I don’t even think that counts) especially a guy.
    “You’re bias,” I replied.
“No,” Lucas stopped and turned me so I faced him. “I’m not. I’m right this time. Don’t deny it.” With that, he stepped forward and gave me my very first kiss.
AN: Ughh, it's been forever; I know :( so sorry you guys!! I just have a whole bunch of stuff going on right now, I never seem to get a chance to type this up! I have the next few chapters typed up, and hopefully I'll be able to add one a day for a few days at least. I'll try my hardest. So sorry, again. Thanks so much for reading, though! Our Summer
    Chapter 37
The next morning, I almost fell out of bed in surprise when I realized Lucas was sleeping next to me. I flashed back to last night.
We’d talked for a couple hours about nothing, really. We told each other stories about our childhoods, school, just life in general. I had laid down next to him after awhile, and he had played with my hair. That was the only time we had touched all night. I some point, I had fallen asleep, and here we were.
I glanced at the clock quickly. 6:33. Thank God for Lucas’ odd sleeping patterns – I’d gotten so used to him waking me up early I did it by myself, which meant he’d have time to go and get dressed so no one would find out about last night.
I looked at Lucas. He looked so peaceful. I didn’t want to wake him up – but I had to.
“Lucas,” I said softly, shaking his shoulder lightly.
“Mmm,” he groaned and turned away from me slightly.
“Lucas,” I repeated a little louder. He opened his eyes, and he seems surprised to see me. Then he rubbed his eyes.
“Good morning,” he mumbled. Then he frowned. “Sh*t.”
“Yeah,” I agreed, knowing that he had just realized exactly what I’d realized a few moments earlier.
“I’m going to go get dressed,” he hopped up, and then turned back towards me as if he’d forgotten something. “Sleep in today,” he told me, kissed my cheek, and hurried out of the room.
I touched the place on my cheek where his lips had touched it. I was still holding it when Jamie rushed into my room a few minutes later.
“Did I just see Lucas leave your room in his pajamas?” she asked, rushing to me bed. I smiled and didn’t say anything. I knew she would ask anyways. “Spill,” she sat down cross-legged on the bed.
“He couldn’t sleep so he came down, and we talked,” I shrugged as if it were no big deal.
“That’s it? You talked?” Jamie said astonished. Most people would automatically assume more than that had happened, and that I was only saying that, but Jamie knew I would tell her if it had.
“Hurry up, girl!” she whacked me with a pillow. “You’ve barely got two weeks left!”
I laughed, but her words hit a sensitive spot. Barely two weeks – that’s all I had left to spend with Lucas.

    Chapter 36
After I kicked Brayden’s butt at checkers (okay, I kicked his butt the first time – the other two games? Let’s not go there), we all played Monopoly. I would have won that, but Jamie got Boardwalk and Park Place. Lucas just failed at everything.
All day we played games and laughed at each other. Revenge was a big deal, especially in Trouble.
I was disappointed when the day came to an end. I was even more disappointed when Lucas was the first to go to bed. I sighed and told myself I’d get a chance to talk to him tomorrow.
Jamie, Brayden, and I all stayed up pretty late talking and messing around. When Jamie announced she was going to sleep, I did as well.
She used the bathroom before me, and when I came out, I was surprised to see Brayden still sitting in the living room. It reminded me of the other morning when he was sitting on the deck.
I shrugged it off and went to my room to go to sleep. It took me forever to fall asleep, and once I finally did, a knock on my door woke me up.
I rubbed my eyes and looked at my alarm clock. 1:43. I flipped my lamp on and dragged myself out of bed.
I opened the door to see Lucas in a pair of pajama pants and nothing else. Of course, I’ve seen him shirtless before, but it affected me differently when it was 1:43 in the morning, and I had just woken up.
“Hey,” he asid. That was it. Just ‘hey’. I raised me eyebrows and he gave me a little smirk. He looked tired – which somehow made him more attractive. I bit my lip and smiled back. My face had started to heat up.
“It’s two o’clock in the morning,” I pointed out.
“I know,” he replied, looking away. “I couldn’t sleep,” he explained. “I woke up when Brayden came up.”
“And…?” I prompted him. He shrugged.
“I wanted to talk to you.”
“So you came and woke me up at 1:45 in the morning?”
“Probably not my greatest idea,” he grinned sheepishly.
“Not really,” I agreed, but I let him into my room anyways.

    Our Summer
    Chapter 35
The next day, as predicted, was rainy and stormy, which meant all four of us kids – Brayden, Jamie, Lucas, and I – were stuck inside. After breakfast, we congregated in the living room.
“Who’s up for cards?” Lucas asked.
“I want to play!” Jamie squealed excitedly.
“What about you?” he asked me.
“It’s not exactly my forte,” I replied, awkwardly.
“What she means is, she fails epically at it and refuses to play,” Jamie translated. I rolled my eyes, even though it was true.
“You two play cards,” Brayden jumped in. “I’ll play something else with Natalie.” Then he looked at me. “Checkers?” he raised his eyebrows.
“Sounds good,” I laughed, and he headed to get the board with Lucas who was getting cards.
“Rainy days are amazing,” Jamie told me. “Almost as good as sunny days – but only because they’re rare.”
“Do you just play games all day?” I asked.
“Pretty much,” Jamie replied. “But just a warning, they’re both really competitive.”
“As in, more than you?” I teased.
“Me times like, ten, and you’ve got it.”
“Wow, that’s impressive,” I teased. “Are you sure that’s even possible?”
“Shut up,” she retorted, throwing a pillow at my head.
“Girls, girls,” Lucas came strutting back in. “There’s no need to fight. There’s plenty of me to go around.”
“Ew!” Jamie made a face. “She can have you!”
“Well,” Lucas sat down. “If we weren’t cousins –“
    “But we are,” Jamie interrupted.
“But if we weren’t,” he repeated. “You would be all over me and you know it.”
Jamie made a gagging noise. “Puh-lease!”
“Let me guess,” Brayden walked in. “It has to do with how hot he thinks he is.” Bullseye. Jamie and I laughed, but Lucas crossed his arms and glared at us. He looked absolutely adorable.
“You’re all just jealous,” he said, a few moments later, causing us to burst into laughter again.
And so began the best rainy day I’ve ever had.

    Our Summer
    Chapter 34
He cleared his throat, looking embarrassed. “Maybe we should head back up to the house,” he suggested.
“Wait,” I said as he started to turn and squeezed his hand. “Let’s sit and talk for a little bit,” I said, suddenly shy when he turned back.
“Okay,” he agreed with the hint of a smile tugging at his lips. We moved away from the edge of the water and sat down. “What do you want to talk about?” he asked. I was disappointed he didn’t take my hand again once we sat down.
“I don’t know,” I blushed and averted my eyes. He smiled and brushed a finger over my cheek. I turned to look at him again, and I was caught in his gaze. I’ve never seen eyes like his – they were the perfect mixture of blue and green.
“Do you like me too?” he whispered. The question surprised me and I caught my breath. I nodded, unable to speak. A grin spread across his face and he hugged me tightly. I laughed, loving how it felt to have his strong arms holding me against him.
“That’s good,” he whispered when he finally pulled away.
The wind began to pick up.
“We should head back to the house,” he stood up. “The weather’s supposed to get pretty bad tonight and tomorrow.”
“That sucks,” I said. He pulled me up to my feet and shrugged.
“We’ll still have fun,” he promised, dropping an arm around my shoulders nonchalantly as we started to walk.
“Okay,” I laughed. “If I don’t, I’ll be very disappointed in you,” I warned.
“Don’t worry,” he grinned, and I nervously slid my arm around his waist. I couldn’t believe how right it felt. “You will.”
“Okay,” I smiled and leaned my head against his shoulder.
Once we got to the house and went inside, we sat in the living room and talked for awhile. I was yawning and half asleep on the couch before we finally decided to go to bed.

    Our Summer
    Chapter 33
“You know how you asked about Bree?” he asked. “Why I get nervous around her?” I nodded, my throat tight; I wasn’t so sure that I wanted to know.
“Yeah,” I said, attempting to act natural.
“She’s the closest thing I’ve ever had to a girlfriend,” he explained. I bit my lip. “When she moved here in eighth grade, we talked a lot. I started liking her, and freshman year I finally got up the nerve and asked her to homecoming. She said yes, but we were only going as friends.
“After that, we hung out a lot more and I told her I liked her. She said she liked me back, but we never went out. I guess she stopped liking me at some point because before I knew it she was dating someone else,” Lucas explained.
“I’m sorry,” I told him, although I was surprised that he still got nervous around her even though this had happened over a year ago.
“There’s more,” he said. “Beginning of sophomore year, she found out her boyfriend had cheated on her over the summer, and she told me about it, and we started talking again. After a couple weeks, she got back together with the guy, but we kept talking this time. They were constantly on and off again, and she always turned to me when they were fighting, or broke up. Finally, I told her I still liked her, and that I couldn’t stand seeing her so sad and that she should just break up with him for good,” he said.
    “Big mistake?” I guessed.
“Huge. We stopped talking as much, and eventually she wouldn’t talk to me at all,” Lucas finished.
“Is she still dating him?” I asked.
“As far as I know,” he replied.
    “She seemed really nice.”
“She is,” he sighed. “Well, now you know. I’ve never told anyone that story before.”
“Really?” I said, finding it adorable, despite the situation.
    “Really,” he admitted.
    “Why tell me?” I asked.
“Because,” he paused. “I like you Natalie. A lot. And I trust you. I feel like I can tell you anything.” We had stopped walking now, and he was looking down at me. “I’ve never felt like this before.”

    Our Summer
    Chapter 32
I didn’t get a chance to see Lucas again that evening. It was strange for him to stay up in his room like that – that was more Brayden-like behavior.
That night, at about 10:30, I went to get a drink of water, and I noticed someone was sitting out on the deck. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was Lucas. I set down my cup and stepped outside.
“Natalie?” he said, surprised. “What are you doing out here?”
“I could ask you the same thing,” I replied as I sat down next to him on the steps.
    “I’m just thinking,” he sighed.
“’Bout what?” I asked, bumping his knee with mine. He didn’t answer. As we sat there, I began to get goose bumps. It was surprising how chilly it was. A breeze picked up, and I shivered a little.
“You’re cold?” Lucas realized. I nodded. “Put some pants on, girl!” he teased. I was wearing my pink plaid pajama shorts. He handed me his sweatshirt, though, and I gratefully pulled it on.
“Thanks,” I smiled up at him. He smiled back and absently brushed a stray hair off my face. My skin burned at his touch and the butterflies in my stomach went wild.
“Do you want to go for a walk?” he asked suddenly, standing up.
“Sure,” I giggled. He offered me his hand to help me up, and when we started walking he didn’t let go.
We walked in the sand, just on the edge of the shore line.
“How mad would you be if I threw you in the water right now?” he asked with a mischievous glint in his eyes.
“Don’t even think about it,” I warned.
“Too late,” he replied. I rolled my eyes.
    "You would die.”
    “Is that a threat?”
    “It’s a promise.”
“Well, I better not do it then. I wouldn’t want to make you break a promise,” Lucas said. I laughed and hit him lightly with my free hand. His grip tightened on my fingers.
“Can I tell you something?" he asked seriously.
    “Yeah,” I said. “Go ahead.”

    Our Summer
    Chapter 30
“Hey, Bree,” Lucas said to the girl, equally surprised. She was our age and gorgeous. Her straight auburn hair was medium length, but it was pulled back in a ponytail and only her bangs fell out. She was taller than me, probably 5’6” or so. “Uhh, this is Natalie – my cousin’s friend,” he cleared his throat.
“I’m Breanna,” she smiled at me. “It’s nice to meet you.” Turning back to Lucas, she said, “Your cousin, Jamie?”
“Yeah,” he nodded. I was surprised when he didn’t say more. He was usually really talkative.
“I didn’t know she was here.”
“Yeah, they came right after school got out,” Lucas explained.
“Are you having fun?” she asked me.
“Yeah,” I nodded. “It’s my first time in California.”
“I love it here. I moved here in eighth grade,” she explained. “So did you get your license?” she asked Lucas.
“A couple hours ago, actually,” he smiled at her. I bit my lip. It was the kind of smile he usually gave me.
“Nice,” Breanna smiled. “Your birthday was yesterday, right? Happy birthday,” she said, when he nodded.
    “Thanks.”
“Well, I should get to work,” she said and sounded regretful.
“Alright, well, I’ll see you around,” Lucas told her.
    “Bye.”
We both got in the car. Lucas was quiet as he started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.
“Who was she?” I asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
    “A girl from school.”
I gave him a look that said, yeah right. I knew there was more to it.
“Why’d you get all nervous around her?” I asked, trying to keep my tone light and playful. His grip on the steering wheel tightened.
    “I didn’t,” he said defensively.
    “Sure,” I rolled my eyes.
“Just leave it alone, Natalie.” The force in his voice surprised me. I dropped the subject, and we didn’t speak for the rest of the drive. I wondered what there was that he wasn’t telling me about Breanna. I wondered why he’d looked at her the same way he’d looked at me last night. Most importantly, though, I wondered what about her had gotten him to snap at me.

    Our Summer
    Chapter 29
Not surprisingly, Lucas passed his driver’s license test.
“We should celebrate,” he told me when he got back.
“Really?” I smiled. It was cute how excited he was. He was like a little kid. “And what do you suggest?” He thought for a moment.
    “Ice cream,” he decided.
    “Ice cream?” I laughed.
“Ice cream,” he repeated, firmly. “Go get dressed.” I laughed and went to my room.
I pulled on a black lace tee shirt over a bright blue camisole tank top and a pair of dark jean shorts. I put on a tiny bit of eyeliner and pulled a brush through my hair.
Once I was ready, I slid on a pair of flip flops the same color as my tank top and went to find Lucas. He grinned when he saw me.
“Ready?” he asked, grabbing the keys. I nodded. He called to his mom to tell her we were leaving, and we headed out to the car.
We went to the ice cream parlor we’d gone to the other day, and I got the same thing he’d gotten then.
When we finished eating, I wasn’t even close to ready to go home.
“What is there to do around here?” I asked as we headed outside. “Other than go to the beach,” I specified.
“Not much,” he laughed. “That’s about all we’ve got.”
    “Well…” I thought for a moment. “Let’s go for a walk!” I decided.
    “Okay,” Lucas laughed again. “Why?”
“Because I want to,” I replied.
“Alright, good enough for me,” Lucas grinned, and we started walking, where I didn’t know.
“You better hope you don’t get burnt with that shirt on,” Lucas pointed out. I looked down.
“That would be interesting,” I laughed.
    “No kidding,” Lucas snorted.
“Hey,” I giggled and purposely bumped into his side. “Be nice.”
“What’s the fun in that?” he teased.
“Maybe people would like you?” I joked.
“Oh, and I’m mean?” Lucas replied, giving my hair a tug.
“Hey!” I protested, pulling his hand away. We walked around for awhile before we decided to go back to his house.
As we walked back to the ice cream parlor a girl in a waitress uniform was getting out of her car.
“Lucas,” she said surprised, upon seeing us. “Hi,” she smiled.
